Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallA VJ loop is a live-performance asset, not merely a short video set to repeat. It should restart without an obvious jump, remain readable across a venue, survive layering and speed changes, and play reliably on the software and hardware driving the show. This guide takes one loop from concept through timing, export, Resolume playback, TouchDesigner workflows, and live troubleshooting.
The anatomy of a great VJ loop
A seamless loop returns visually to a compatible state. A performable loop goes further: it can be retriggered, slowed, reversed, cued, layered, cropped, and used at different points in a set.
- Seamless restart: Motion, blur, lighting, particles, and camera momentum must agree at the join; matching only the first and last still frame is not enough.
- Stage readability: Strong silhouettes, contrast, and uncluttered shapes survive distance, reduced brightness, and projection or LED scaling.
- Mixing space: Backgrounds need negative space for text, performers, logos, or other clips.
- Flexible timing: Reusable assets should tolerate tempo changes rather than depending on one song.
- Useful variants: Keep opaque, alpha, aspect-ratio, and resolution versions when the show requires them.
Separate beat-synchronous clips, free-running backgrounds, one-shot accents, generative systems, and mapping-specific animations. They do not all need the same duration or timing strategy.
Choose a creation method
| Goal | Suitable workflow | Strength | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| First rendered loop | Video editor or motion-graphics software | Familiar timeline and keyframes | Limited live interaction |
| 3D object or scene | Blender or another 3D package | Modeling, materials, cameras, and simulation | More setup and rendering |
| Live clip mixing | Resolume Avenue | Layers, effects, BPM, MIDI, and OSC | Not a full 3D modeling environment |
| Projection mapping | Resolume Arena | Mapping, edge blending, multi-projector and lighting workflows | More costly than Avenue |
| Generative or audio-reactive visuals | TouchDesigner | Deep procedural and real-time control | Steeper technical learning curve |
| Hybrid production | 3D or motion-graphics tool plus Resolume or TouchDesigner | Separates authoring from performance | Requires disciplined export and color management |
Resolume describes Avenue and Arena capabilities here: Avenue versus Arena and the product page. TouchDesigner’s operator-based, real-time workflow is documented at Derivative’s operator reference.

Abstract procedural loops
Noise fields, feedback trails, particles, fluids, fractals, and shaders make reusable backgrounds and audio-reactive systems. Their risk is visual sameness unless you establish a distinctive palette, motion language, and hierarchy.
2D motion graphics
Typography, logos, masks, grids, and shape systems are effective for branding and event packages. Clean design exposes weak timing, so vary scale, easing, and secondary motion deliberately.
3D, footage, and live systems
3D is suited to hero visuals but costs more in render time and storage. Fire, smoke, water, crowds, and lights provide organic realism, yet often need blending or ping-pong playback. Live-generative systems offer continuing variation and interaction but demand more rehearsal and hardware testing.
Plan before animating
- Identify the role: background, texture, overlay, transition, stinger, logo, beat accent, hero visual, or mapping element.
- Record the venue and geometry: standard screen, LED wall, projector, mapped surface, livestream, or social format.
- Choose aspect ratio, output resolution, constant frame rate, and whether alpha is required.
- Decide whether audio is embedded, separate, or absent.
- Specify the playback application, expected layer count, GPU, storage, and output connection.
- Design for cropping, scaling, and the venue’s brightness and safety policy.
There is no universal export. A high-quality master, a transparent version, and a playback-optimized version are often more useful than one file intended for every system.

Make the motion loop cleanly
Exact state return
Return position, rotation, scale, color, lighting, and camera state to their starting values. This is reliable for geometric and keyframed animation, provided momentum and motion blur also resolve.
Crossfade or masked transition
Blend the ending into the beginning for footage and atmospheric motion. Check for ghosting, double images, brightness pumping, and mismatched grain. A mask can hide a join, but an obvious wipe may become repetitive.
Ping-pong playback
Forward-then-back playback avoids a hard cut when footage has no natural endpoint. Resolume documents Ping Pong as a playback option at its video guide. It works well for symmetrical motion, smoke, and textures, but reversed people, text, or directional effects can look wrong.
Procedural continuation
Shaders, particles, and TouchDesigner networks can run indefinitely. If you render only a section, test its captured start and end states; a generative source does not automatically make a rendered file seamless.

Build a repeatable loop
- Create one visual subject and establish its silhouette, palette, and background.
- Set the timeline length and constant frame rate before keyframing.
- Animate one principal parameter through a complete cycle, then add restrained secondary motion.
- Use interpolation that returns cleanly; inspect acceleration, blur, particles, and lighting near the join.
- Render a short test and watch it repeatedly at normal speed, half speed, reverse, and retriggered.
- Import the test into the intended VJ software and add representative layers and effects.
An eight-beat design can establish a state, introduce motion, build intensity, reach a peak, resolve detail, and return to the opening state. Longer, slower loops are often less obviously repetitive than forcing complex motion into two or four beats.
Time the loop to frames and BPM
Use these calculations when a clip must represent a fixed number of beats:
duration in seconds = beats Ă— 60 Ă· BPMframe count = duration in seconds Ă— frames per second
The frame count should be an integer for a frame-perfect file. At 25 fps, one bar at 90 BPM does not map exactly to a whole number of frames; Resolume’s example gives a nearest 66-frame clip of approximately 90.9 BPM rather than exactly 90 BPM (preparing media). You can change frame rate, choose another beat length, let the VJ application control timing, separate audio and video, use a live system, or accept a tiny deviation when it is inaudible.

- 1 beat: short accent
- 2 or 4 beats: rhythmic detail
- 8 or 16 beats: standard background
- 32 or 64 beats: slow, evolving material
These are starting points, not rules. A visual can be visually seamless yet drift musically, or be mathematically beat-correct while showing a bad visual cut.
Add music reactivity without losing control
- Manual keyframes: predictable and intentionally musical.
- Envelope following: volume drives a parameter.
- FFT analysis: bass, mids, and highs control separate parameters.
- MIDI or OSC: a performer controls parameters live.
- Live procedural analysis: a system responds continuously to incoming audio.
Resolume documents parameter animation and audio analysis at its parameter-animation guide, with MIDI and OSC support described in its Avenue/Arena documentation. Smooth signals, set thresholds and response curves, and keep manual overrides. If every parameter reacts at once, hierarchy disappears and the clip becomes difficult to mix.

Codec and container
Keep a high-quality master, then make versions for the target application. Resolume recommends DXV for best performance inside Resolume because its frames can be decompressed on the GPU (preparing media). That advantage is application-specific; it does not automatically apply in unrelated players (DXV rendering guidance). H.264 is convenient for interchange, but a delivery codec is not necessarily ideal for many live composite layers.
Audio separation
For Resolume, separate audio and video when possible. Resolume says this makes replacement easier and avoids some frame-quantization problems at particular BPM and frame-rate combinations. Use uncompressed PCM WAV for fast access, as recommended in its media-preparation guidance.

Alpha, resolution, and frame rate
An opaque video, an alpha-capable overlay, and a luma- or chroma-key version are different deliverables. A black background is not transparency, and alpha support depends on codec, container, software, and operating system. Match the output resolution where possible, but avoid 4K when the display is 1080p and dozens of layers will run. Use higher resolution for large LED walls or heavy cropping; use lower resolution for background textures on GPU-limited systems. Keep frame rate consistent and avoid unnecessary late conversions or variable-frame-rate files.

Use the loop in Resolume
- Install Avenue or Arena and the appropriate codec tools.
- Import the clip into a composition.
- Choose Loop for ordinary repetition.
- Choose Ping Pong when the footage has no clean restart.
- Choose BPM Sync, verify the composition tempo, and enter the clip’s beat count.
- Set cue points for an intro, peak, or alternate state.
- Use Beat Looper for temporary rhythmic cuts or escalating repetitions.
- Map essential controls to MIDI or OSC and test retriggering.
Resolume documents Loop, Ping Pong, Random, BPM Sync, cue points, and Beat Looper at its video guide and explains beat-count behavior at the version-6 video guide. Test the clip alone, then with realistic layers and effects. Arena, rather than Avenue, adds mapping, edge blending, multi-projector, and related stage-control workflows according to Resolume’s product information.
Use the loop in TouchDesigner
TouchDesigner is appropriate when you want to build the visual system rather than only play rendered clips. Create geometry, particles, noise, footage, or shaders; composite them through TOP, CHOP, SOP, and related operators; drive parameters with audio or external control; and either capture a loop or keep the network live for continuous variation.
Test on the same GPU class, output resolution, and connection configuration intended for the show. Derivative’s licensing documentation lists a free Non-Commercial edition for personal, educational, or evaluation use, limited to 1280×1280 and not licensed for compensated work (licensing; Non-Commercial terms). The official download page lists changing builds and licenses at derivative.ca/download; use an Official build for production unless you have a specific reason to test an Experimental build. Pricing and build information change, so verify them on the official pages before purchase.
Troubleshoot the actual performance
| Symptom | Likely causes | First fixes |
|---|---|---|
| Visible jump | Nonmatching endpoints or motion discontinuity | Rework the cycle, crossfade, or try Ping Pong |
| BPM drift | Wrong frame rate or noninteger frame duration | Change beat length or frame rate, or separate audio |
| Stutter | Heavy codec, too many layers, slow storage, effects, or drivers | Use the target codec, reduce load, test a local SSD and representative GPU |
| Black background | No alpha or unsupported alpha codec | Export alpha or use a luma/chroma-key version |
| Washed-out color | Color-management, HDR, gamma, or 10-bit mismatch | Compare source, export, preview, and live output separately |
| Missing frames | Unsupported codec or corrupt file | Re-export and test in the target application |
| Audio out of sync | Embedded audio duration or frame quantization | Load PCM audio separately |
Strobing and rapid flashes can create safety concerns. Follow the venue’s current policy and applicable jurisdictional guidance rather than relying on an assumed universal threshold.
Build a usable loop library
Tag files by project, category, orientation, resolution, alpha status, beat length, codec, and version. Keep thumbnails, notes, masters, alternates, and backups in show-specific folders. Rehearse from the same local storage, GPU, drivers, output hardware, and operating-system configuration that will be used at the venue.
Quick Recap
Final checklist
- Target geometry, aspect ratio, resolution, and constant frame rate are documented.
- The visual role and restart method are intentional.
- First and last states, motion direction, blur, lighting, and particles have been tested repeatedly.
- Beat count and BPM behavior have been checked, or the clip is intentionally free-running.
- Master, playback, alpha, and resolution variants are labeled.
- Audio is separate when the target workflow benefits from it.
- The file plays in the actual VJ application with representative layers and effects.
- Speed, direction, cue, retrigger, MIDI/OSC, and recovery behavior work as expected.
