How Do I Start a Live Session on BandLab?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On BandLab Web, open an editable project in the full Mix Editor, open Collaborators, invite the people who need access, then choose Start Live Session. Invitees join from the notification or the project’s collaboration panel. The documented workflow is tied to a project’s Web Mix Editor—not the general dashboard—and only one participant can record at a time.

What a BandLab Live Session does

A Live Session lets invited collaborators work in the same music project in real time. They can add recordings or other parts to the mix while the session is active. It is not a livestream, video call, public broadcast, Band, or fork of a public song.

BandLab distinguishes ordinary collaboration, which can involve listening, chatting and creating revisions, from Live Session collaboration, where participants add their own parts to the mix. See BandLab’s explanations of collaboration and forking and Live Session controls.

Before you begin

  • Sign in to a BandLab account and maintain an active internet connection; BandLab says Web and Mobile features can differ. Its current platform guidance recommends the latest Google Chrome for Web, with Android 8.2 or later and iOS 15.5 or later for the mobile apps (BandLab requirements).
  • Use an existing project that you can edit or collaborate on, opened in the full Mix Editor.
  • Invite the intended collaborators before trying to start the session.
  • If anyone will record, prepare headphones and test a microphone, instrument or interface. BandLab’s setup guide covers USB microphones, audio interfaces and input selection; Web Studio supports up to two input channels per track (microphone and instrument setup).

How to start a Live Session on BandLab Web

  1. Open the project. From your BandLab library or project list, open the song in the full Mix Editor, not a feed post, preview or playback page.
  2. Open Collaborators. In the editor, open the Collaborators panel. BandLab’s older Web guide places this control at the bottom-right of the Mix Editor.
  3. Invite users. Open the panel’s three-dot menu, choose Invite Collaborators, enter the intended users’ BandLab usernames and send the invitations.
  4. Start the session. Select Start Live Session at the top of the Collaboration panel. Some BandLab material uses the shorter label Start Session; look for the equivalent control.
  5. Have collaborators join. Invited users should receive a notice that the Live Session has begun and select Join. They can also open the project’s collaboration panel while signed in to the invited account.
  6. Coordinate recording. Keep the project open while you work. The session is attached to this particular project, rather than being a separate general-purpose room.
  7. End the session. When the real-time work is finished, choose End Session in the Collaboration panel. The project remains available for ordinary editing afterward.

These labels and sequence come from BandLab’s documented Web workflow: Collaborators → Invite Collaborators → Start Live Session.

Can everyone record at the same time?

No. BandLab’s documented Live Session workflow allows only one person to record at a time. When another collaborator should take the recording role:

  1. Open the active Collaboration panel.
  2. Click the control-transfer button, described in the older guide as a double-arrow control in the green collaboration banner.
  3. Select the collaborator who should record.
  4. Transfer control again when the next person needs to add a part.

If your current interface uses a different icon or banner, look for the equivalent control-transfer option. Live Session coordinates project work; it does not promise zero-latency remote jamming. Network quality, browser performance, hardware and interface drivers can affect responsiveness, so headphones and a one-recorder-at-a-time plan are safer for recording.

Web, iPhone and Android availability

The clearest first-party Live Session instructions describe the Web Mix Editor. BandLab’s current support page explicitly warns that Web and Mobile feature sets can differ, and it does not clearly document a current iOS or Android Live Session control. If the button is absent in the app or a mobile browser, use BandLab Web on a computer rather than assuming the feature is supported there.

This availability qualification reflects the state checked on August 18, 2026: the older official Live Session Help Center URL is currently inaccessible, while the current platform page was updated August 17, 2026. BandLab may have renamed, hidden or limited the feature for some accounts or interfaces.

If “Start Live Session” is missing

  1. Check the view. Return to the full Mix Editor; song pages, previews, feed posts and playback screens may not show the control.
  2. Check permissions. Confirm that you own the project or have appropriate editing/collaboration access. A public listening link alone is not enough.
  3. Invite collaborators first. The documented sequence places invitations before starting the session.
  4. Try desktop Web. Mobile and Web capabilities can differ; use a current desktop browser, especially the latest Chrome recommended by BandLab.
  5. Look for a renamed control. Search the Collaborators panel for Start Session or Live Session.
  6. Check eligibility and account state. Current BandLab support pages do not guarantee universal Live Session availability for every account or project.
  7. Check the connection. BandLab requires an active internet connection. Stabilize the network before inviting people again.

If a collaborator cannot join

  • Verify that the invitation went to the BandLab account they are actually using and that they are signed in.
  • Confirm they have project access, not merely a public song link.
  • Ask them to open the project in BandLab Web rather than a mobile browser.
  • Confirm that the host’s session is still active and that the project has not been closed.
  • Save recent work before reloading. Avoid repeated refreshes during an unsaved recording.

If no microphone or instrument input appears

  • On Web, add a Voice/Audio, Guitar or Bass track.
  • Choose the intended input device and channel in the track controls.
  • Connect a USB microphone directly, or connect a conventional microphone or instrument through an audio interface.
  • Test levels before transferring recording control, and use headphones to reduce feedback and microphone bleed.

BandLab’s current connection guidance explains these device and input choices, including the difference between iOS input selection and Android’s main sound settings: Connecting Instruments and Microphones.
