COWBOY CARTER is not a conventional country album. It is Beyoncé’s eighth studio album and the second act after RENAISSANCE, using country and Americana as an entry point into the wider Black American musical archive. Across a 27-track sequence, Beyoncé links Texas memory, Houston rodeo culture, gospel, blues, folk, rock, opera, R&B, pop, zydeco and electronic music. The result is a historical argument made in sound: American music becomes larger when the Black artists who helped build it are brought back to the center.

What is COWBOY CARTER, and why does it matter?

Released on March 29, 2024, COWBOY CARTER is Beyoncé’s eighth studio album and the second act in a project that began with RENAISSANCE. Its “cowboy” identity is both personal and historical. Beyoncé grew up in Houston and encountered country culture through Texas life and the Houston Rodeo, while the album looks backward to the Black musicians whose work shaped country, gospel, blues and folk but was often excluded from the genre’s public story.

The album matters because it treats genre as a boundary to investigate rather than a box to occupy. Beyoncé’s own description is the clearest guide: “This ain’t a country album. This is a Beyoncé album.” The record asks who gets to define country, which sounds are allowed inside it and why American music is so often divided into racial categories after Black musicians have created its foundations.

Is COWBOY CARTER a country album?

It contains country music, but calling it only a country album misses its central idea. Country is the doorway, not the destination. The songs move abruptly among country, gospel, blues, folk, opera, R&B, rock, pop, zydeco and electronic production, making the shifts themselves part of the argument.

“TEXAS HOLD ’EM” supplies a banjo-driven, danceable country single, while “16 CARRIAGES” uses a more reflective country vocabulary. “BLACKBIIRD” revisits the Beatles song through a collaboration with four contemporary Black women country singers. “JOLENE” reworks Dolly Parton’s classic rather than treating it as untouchable heritage. Elsewhere, “YA YA” draws on Nancy Sinatra and The Beach Boys, “DAUGHTER” introduces an Italian aria, “LEVII’S JEANS” pairs Beyoncé with Post Malone, and “RIIVERDANCE” returns to electronic textures associated with RENAISSANCE.

The album therefore behaves less like a genre exercise than a map of American musical exchange. Its country elements are essential, but they are placed beside sounds that commercial categories normally keep apart.

How does Beyoncé turn genre into a historical argument?

The opening and closing create a civic, almost religious frame

“AMERIICAN REQUIEM” opens the album with a title that deliberately stretches the word “American.” It sounds like a national memorial and a challenge at once, asking whose history is being mourned and whose is being celebrated. “AMEN” closes the sequence, giving the project a sermon-like arc from questioning to affirmation.

That architecture makes the album more than a collection of singles. The songs, interludes and radio voices form a passage through competing versions of American identity, with Beyoncé moving between inheritance, exclusion and reclamation.

The production favors physical instruments and audible texture

Sony’s account says Beyoncé worked on the album for more than five years and recorded about 100 songs before selecting the final body of work. She described a return to organic sound and imperfect textures, saying, “The joy of creating music is that there are no rules.” The instrument list includes accordion, harmonica, washboard, acoustic guitar, bass ukulele, pedal steel, mandolin, fiddle, Hammond B3 organ, tack piano and banjo.

These details are not decorative nostalgia. A washboard or pedal steel places the listener inside recognizable American traditions, while the album’s sequencing immediately unsettles any assumption that one tradition can contain the whole record. Electronic passages, vocal layering and studio polish remain present, so “organic” does not mean historically frozen.

The songs make the connections audible

  • “BLACKBIIRD” connects Beyoncé with Tanner Adell, Brittney Spencer, Reyna Roberts and Tiera Kennedy, making contemporary Black women country singers part of the song’s foreground rather than its footnote.
  • “SPAGHETTII” uses Linda Martell’s spoken intervention to question the usefulness of rigid genre labels.
  • “JOLENE” places Beyoncé in direct conversation with Dolly Parton and turns a familiar country narrative into a new vocal and emotional setting.
  • “DAUGHTER” moves from intimate songwriting toward opera, demonstrating how quickly the album can change cultural register without treating the transition as a novelty.
  • “LEVII’S JEANS” uses a duet with Post Malone to blur the boundary between country-pop, R&B and contemporary crossover songwriting.
  • “RIIVERDANCE” brings back electronic motion, tying the album to the dance-floor world established by RENAISSANCE.

Why is Linda Martell important to the album?

Linda Martell is the album’s most explicit historical guide. The Recording Academy identifies her as the first commercially successful Black female country artist and the first solo Black woman to perform at the Grand Ole Opry. Her spoken introduction on “SPAGHETTII” explains why those facts matter: genre labels may appear simple in theory, but in practice they can confine artists.

Martell’s voice changes the listener’s understanding of the project. She is not included merely as an honored elder or a nostalgic reference. Her appearance identifies the institutional problem COWBOY CARTER is addressing: categories that claim to describe musical style have also been used to control who receives access, airplay and recognition.

The album’s historical purpose is reinforced by the unequal record of country radio. An analysis by Jada Watson and the University of Ottawa examined more than 11,000 songs from 2002 through 2020 and found that artists of color represented 3 percent of airplay; AP reported that two-thirds of that small share came from men. The study’s publication year is not specified in the available account, so the figure should be read as a description of that 2002–2020 sample, not a current industry total.

Which Black musical histories does COWBOY CARTER reclaim?

The album’s argument reaches beyond a single forgotten singer. Rhiannon Giddens contributes musician-scholar knowledge of the banjo’s African and Southern lineages, challenging the popular image of the banjo as an exclusively white Appalachian instrument. Contemporary artists including Tanner Adell, Brittney Spencer, Reyna Roberts and Tiera Kennedy make the present-day Black country scene audible alongside the historical references.

Gospel appears as both sound and structure. Blues phrasing, folk storytelling, rock guitar, zydeco rhythm and R&B vocal production are treated as related parts of one American continuum rather than isolated genres. The record also recognizes that Black musical labor often travels across categories: a rhythm can migrate from church to dance floor, a string instrument can move from African traditions into Southern music, and a vocal style can be renamed when it reaches a different market.

Willie Nelson’s KNTRY interludes create a fictional radio station in which that expanded history can be broadcast. The station is a narrative device, but it also dramatizes the gatekeeping that real radio has often performed. A radio world that welcomes more histories is presented as imaginable, even when the commercial format outside the album has been restrictive.

What is the COWBOY CARTER tracklist and runtime?

AP describes a 78-minute, 27-track album, while Apple Music’s editorial copy calls it approximately 80 minutes. The difference reflects platform presentation and rounding; it is more accurate to describe COWBOY CARTER as a roughly 78-to-80-minute work than to insist on one universal runtime.

Track listings can count interludes and platform metadata differently. The principal sequence is:

  1. AMERIICAN REQUIEM
  2. BLACKBIIRD
  3. 16 CARRIAGES
  4. PROTECTOR
  5. MY ROSE
  6. SMOKE HOUR ★ WILLIE NELSON
  7. TEXAS HOLD ’EM
  8. DOLLY P
  9. JOLENE
  10. DAUGHTER
  11. SPAGHETTII
  12. ALLIIGATOR TEARS
  13. SMOKE HOUR II
  14. JUST FOR FUN
  15. II MOST WANTED
  16. LEVII’S JEANS
  17. FLAMENCO
  18. THE LINDA MARTELL SHOW
  19. YA YA
  20. OH LOUISIANA
  21. DESERT EAGLE
  22. RIIVERDANCE
  23. II HANDS II HEAVEN
  24. TYRANT
  25. SWEET HONEY BUCKIIN’
  26. AMEN

Some services present the release as 27 tracks even when a displayed list appears to contain 26 principal titles, because spoken segments, editions or metadata can be counted differently. The safest way to follow the intended experience is to play the album in sequence rather than treating the interludes as optional extras.

How does COWBOY CARTER compare with RENAISSANCE?

Axis RENAISSANCE COWBOY CARTER
Historical reclamation Centers Black origins of house, dance and queer club culture. Centers Black roots and exclusions in country and Americana.
Genre strategy Builds a largely continuous dance-floor progression. Uses sharp shifts among country, gospel, opera, blues, folk, rock, pop and electronic music.
Narrative architecture Creates momentum through club-oriented sequencing. Opens with “AMERIICAN REQUIEM” and closes with “AMEN,” forming a sermon-like arc.
Guest function Guests help extend the dance and club lineage. Guests act as historical witnesses, radio voices and contemporary artists whose presence demonstrates the reclaimed archive.

The two albums are not interchangeable genre experiments. RENAISSANCE builds a continuum designed for movement; COWBOY CARTER makes interruption and contrast meaningful. Together they present Beyoncé’s larger project as a reconsideration of who shaped American popular music and how those contributions were classified.

What did COWBOY CARTER achieve commercially and institutionally?

“TEXAS HOLD ’EM” crossed nine U.S. chart genres. It also made Beyoncé the first Black female artist to reach No. 1 on both Hot Country Songs and the Billboard Hot 100 with a country song. The achievement exposed how porous the boundaries between country and mainstream pop can be when a release receives broad attention.

The institutional recognition arrived at the 2025 Grammy Awards, where Beyoncé won Best Country Album, becoming the first Black woman to win that category. In her acceptance speech she said, “I think sometimes ‘genre’ is a code word to keep us in our place as artists.” The award does not settle the album’s questions; it shows that the institutions being questioned can also be pressured to revise their definitions.

How can you listen to or buy COWBOY CARTER on vinyl?

For a first listen, use the complete sequence rather than starting with the singles. The interludes and radio transitions explain why a country song is followed by opera, rock or electronic production, and they make the historical argument easier to hear as a whole.

The documented physical edition is a Beyoncé Cowboy Carter vinyl 2LP set with two 180-gram black records, printed inner sleeves, a 40-page booklet and a folded 24-by-36-inch poster. Sony’s official store page showed the item as sold out when it was accessed, so availability, price and edition details require a check at the time of purchase. A listing that omits the booklet or poster may be a different pressing or an incomplete description.

What is the central idea of COWBOY CARTER?

Beyoncé is not borrowing country imagery to decorate a pop album. She is using country’s history, exclusions and instruments to show that the category was always connected to Black American creativity. By placing Linda Martell, Rhiannon Giddens, Willie Nelson and contemporary Black country singers in the same musical world, COWBOY CARTER turns genre expansion into an act of historical correction.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should a first-time listener approach the album’s interludes?

Treat the radio segments and spoken introductions as part of the composition, not as skippable advertisements. They establish the fictional KNTRY broadcast and explain how the album moves from one musical tradition to another.

Why does the album move so suddenly between styles?

The abrupt changes are deliberate. They demonstrate that country, gospel, blues, opera, rock, R&B and electronic music can coexist within one American lineage instead of being sealed into separate commercial categories.

What does Beyoncé’s Grammy win mean for country music?

It gives institutional recognition to a project that challenged the category’s racial boundaries. The award is historically significant, but the album’s larger point is that Black participation in country predates the ceremony and should not depend on a single prize.

Is the vinyl edition identical to the streaming release?

The documented physical package contains the album on two records plus printed extras, but pressing details and track metadata can vary by edition. Check the seller’s current description for the exact contents before buying.
