A vintage Boss DR-110 drum machine, a guitar performance and Udio’s generative music tools came together in a small experiment by GeekWire’s Todd Bishop. The AI did not control the drum machine or turn it into a computer-connected instrument: Bishop recorded music he had made, then asked Udio to extend and accompany it. The result offers a practical example of AI as an addition to a human-led process, not a replacement for one.
What happened in the experiment?
In a story published January 4, 2025, Bishop described how his brother brought a Boss DR-110 Dr. Rhythm to a family Christmas gathering. Bishop took it home to Seattle, played guitar over one of its preset rhythms, and uploaded a roughly 35-second excerpt to Udio. The selected pattern was Rhythm 5 in Bank D. Udio then extended and accompanied the recording. GeekWire’s account includes the experiment and its audio result.
The parts had distinct roles: the DR-110 supplied the rhythm, Bishop played guitar, and Udio generated additional musical material. Nothing in the account indicates that the drum machine was connected directly to Udio, controlled by AI, or modified to communicate with a modern computer. This was a workflow linking recorded audio to an online service, not a new hardware integration.

The DR-110 is a compact electronic drum machine from around 1983, also known as Dr. Rhythm. GeekWire describes a device about the size of a videocassette, with physical buttons and knobs, a small monochrome display and a grid-like interface for working with rhythms. It offers built-in patterns as well as a hands-on way to program beats.

Gear coverage describes the DR-110 as using six synthesized drum voices, including kick, snare, hi-hat, hand clap and cymbal sounds, with preset and user-programmable rhythm storage. Those specifications come from Reverb’s history of Roland and Boss beat machines, rather than from a technical breakdown of Bishop’s recording.
Its significance in the experiment is not that it has modern connectivity. It is a constrained, physical instrument: a limited set of sounds and patterns gives a musician a starting point without the open-ended choices of a software studio.
What did Udio contribute—and what is unknown?
The documented operation is that Udio extended and accompanied an uploaded audio clip. That supports describing the output as a generated continuation or arrangement based on a recording containing the guitar and drum-machine rhythm. It does not establish that the service isolated the instruments, preserved the original audio unchanged, or followed the DR-110’s timing in a particular technical way.

The published account does not specify the recording equipment, software, file format, prompt, generation settings, number of versions auditioned, or how the final audio treated the original performance. It also does not show that the AI was trained only on Bishop’s upload. Without those details, claims about exactly how the model interpreted or transformed the recording would be speculation.
How should the result be judged?
Bishop described the result as modest rather than a major artistic achievement: passable, potentially useful as low-key background music, and made in only a few minutes by his account. That is his subjective assessment, not an independent sound-quality test or a benchmark another user should expect to match.
- Technical success: Udio generated an extension and accompaniment from a short recording.
- Musical success: Bishop found the result listenable for a modest purpose; taste will vary.
- Professional success: The account does not establish that the piece was ready for commercial release, broadcast or professional production.
- Creative success: A human performance and a chosen rhythm formed the starting point, rather than a song being generated solely from a text prompt.
The headline phrase “from impossible to merely difficult” echoes Microsoft CTO Kevin Scott’s remarks at Microsoft Build in May 2024. The event transcript provides that context. In Bishop’s story, the phrase captures how a tool can make a once-difficult creative step more accessible; one personal experiment does not prove that AI is always most useful as a collaborator.

Why the human-led workflow matters
The interesting contrast is between the DR-110’s limited palette, an imperfect guitar performance and a generative service capable of expanding a brief sketch. Bishop chose the instrument and rhythm, played the guitar, selected the excerpt and judged whether the result worked. Udio supplied a possible elaboration. The musician still provided the source material, direction and taste.
That division of labor is different from asking a system to create a complete song from a prompt. It also does not guarantee that the output will preserve the player’s intent. A generation can reinterpret timing, harmony, tone or arrangement, and the source account does not describe what Bishop did with unwanted results. Treating an output as a draft to assess—not as an automatically finished track—is the more useful way to approach this kind of tool.
How to recreate the idea without copying unknown details
The broad workflow is reproducible, but an identical result is not guaranteed. The original account does not identify the recording setup or current Udio controls, so there is no reliable basis for exact menus, upload settings or file requirements here.

- Choose a rhythmic source. Use a functioning DR-110 if its particular sound and limitations matter to you. Otherwise, a modern drum machine, software drum instrument or recorded beat can serve the same broad role.
- Record a short performance. Play guitar with the rhythm and make a clean recording containing the musical material you want the service to work from. The source does not say whether Bishop recorded the guitar and machine together or what equipment he used.
- Keep a backup. Save the original recording separately before uploading or processing it. If a generated version changes the opening, a backup gives you a way to retain and compare your starting performance.
- Check the service’s current terms and capabilities. The 2025 account used Udio for audio extension and accompaniment, but does not establish that its current interface, feature availability, upload limits or rights terms are unchanged.
- Review the generated result. Listen for changes to timing, harmony, tone and arrangement. If the service allows multiple generations, compare them rather than assuming the first is definitive; Bishop’s account does not say how many versions he tried.
A DR-110 is not required to test the creative idea. A modern hardware drum machine is generally a more practical choice for reliability and flexibility; software drums are simpler if the goal is just to supply a beat. A DAW gives more direct control over tempo, editing, mixing and separate parts, though it takes more hands-on work. The vintage machine’s appeal is its particular character and constrained, tactile process.

GeekWire reported that Bishop had to affirm he had the right to use and distribute the audio he uploaded. The same January 4, 2025 article noted that Udio was among the AI music services facing a copyright lawsuit brought by the Recording Industry Association of America. That is a report of litigation and allegations at that time, not a finding that the claims were proven.

An upload affirmation is not a guarantee that a generated track is cleared for every purpose. The rights to the recording, any borrowed or sampled material within it, the platform’s terms, and the legal status of AI-generated additions are separate questions. The account does not resolve whether a particular output can be commercially released. Anyone planning distribution should check the service’s applicable terms and obtain appropriate rights advice rather than treating a successful upload as clearance.

Does buying a DR-110 make sense?
Only if the device itself is part of what you want. Used listings are not a stable measure of value: observed examples ranged from about $125 to more than $400, with price depending on condition, accessories, servicing, seller and shipping. These are asking prices, not a representative market average. Listings and product information can be viewed through Reverb’s DR-110 page and its drum-machine listings.
Age and appearance alone do not establish that a unit works properly. A prospective buyer should check for display or button problems, dirty contacts, battery corrosion, intermittent audio, missing power supply and any service history. Some listings may describe a unit as tested without documenting a detailed repair or inspection.
For this experiment’s basic purpose—putting a rhythm under a guitar sketch—a modern machine or software instrument is usually more practical. The DR-110 is the choice for someone who values its sound, history and hands-on constraints, not a necessary accessory for AI music generation.
