No: Amazon did not replace Justin Bieber on Ed Sheeran’s official recording of “I Don’t Care.” In July 2019, Alexa appeared in an Amazon promotional reworking, performing parts associated with Bieber and presenting the result as a duet with Sheeran. The original Sheeran-and-Bieber track remained the official release.
What happened to “I Don’t Care”?
“I Don’t Care” was released as a song by Ed Sheeran featuring Justin Bieber. Its official music video identifies the performers as Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber.
On July 12, 2019, GeekWire reported that Amazon had made a promotional Alexa version. In it, Alexa performed portions associated with Bieber, creating the playful impression that she had “bumped” him from the duet. The headline’s “new single” phrasing referred to that promotional reworking, not a replacement commercial single or a new official Sheeran release. GeekWire’s report is the contemporary account of the feature.
How did the Alexa duet work?
The 2019 report said users could ask an Echo or another Alexa-enabled device to “duet with Sheeran.” Alexa then delivered selected parts of the song in a robotic-sounding voice, including brief lines and vocalizations. It was a voice-assistant entertainment promotion: Alexa was presented as joining Sheeran, rather than as a conventional new studio collaborator.

The report does not establish whether Sheeran recorded new vocals specifically for the promotion, how the audio was produced, or whether Alexa’s part was synthesized, prerecorded, or assembled another way. It also does not document a licensing arrangement or a full distribution history. Those details should not be inferred from the performance itself.
Can you still ask Alexa to sing it?
“Alexa, duet with Sheeran” is the command reported for the promotion in 2019, not a verified current feature. Amazon’s current Alexa overview describes Alexa+ across Echo devices, Fire TV, the Alexa app, and the web, but does not confirm that this particular duet remains available.

If you try the old command now, Alexa might return a regular music result, decline, or respond with something unrelated; those are possibilities, not outcomes verified for a particular device or account. Promotional experiences can be temporary, and availability may vary by region, language, account settings, and service behavior. The historical report does not establish how long the feature remained active or in which countries it could be used.
Why Alexa’s version was a novelty, not an AI music breakthrough
The appeal was the contrast: a familiar hit and polished pop performance placed beside Alexa’s synthetic-sounding voice. The promotion also showed how a voice assistant could be marketed as an interactive entertainment character, not only as a tool for questions, music playback, or smart-home controls.

Although the 2019 coverage framed Alexa as an AI singer, it gives no technical account of a vocal model, voice cloning, autonomous songwriting, or dynamically generated music. What it supports is narrower: Amazon presented an Alexa rendition of selected parts of Sheeran’s song as a conversational promotional experience.

“I Don’t Care” appeared in the context of Sheeran’s 2019 album No. 6 Collaborations Project, which included collaborations with other artists. Alexa’s promotional appearance does not make her an album collaborator, and the available reporting does not establish that the Alexa version was an album track or a standard release on streaming services.
