Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf HBO Max—now branded as Max in many markets—keeps changing languages, first identify what changed: the spoken audio, subtitles or captions, or the app’s menus. Those settings are controlled in different places. Audio and subtitles are usually changed from the player, menu language is tied to the active Max profile, and captions may also be controlled by the device.
There is no single confirmed Max-wide cause for every instance of language switching. Use the steps below to isolate whether the problem follows one title, one device, or your profile across devices.
Start by identifying the language change
| What changed? | Most likely place to fix it |
|---|---|
| The voices or spoken dialogue | The title’s in-player Audio menu |
| Subtitles or closed captions | The title’s Audio and Subtitles menu, plus device caption settings |
| Menus, buttons, or profile screens | The active Max profile’s Display Language setting |
| Only one movie, show, or episode | That title’s available tracks and playback state |
| The problem occurs on every device | Your Max profile or account-level behavior |
| The problem occurs on only one device | The app, device, accessibility settings, or cached app data |
Do not start by changing your television’s entire system language. Max separates the profile’s display language from the audio and subtitle tracks available for an individual title.
1. Reset the audio and subtitle track while the video is playing
- Start the movie, show, or episode that is switching languages.
- Pause the video, or tap or click the screen to display the playback controls.
- Open the Audio and Subtitles control, usually represented by a speech-bubble icon.
- Under audio, select the language you actually want to hear.
- Under subtitles or captions, choose the preferred language or select Off.
- Close the menu and resume playback.
Max says that audio tracks, subtitles, and closed captions vary by title. A program may offer several dubbed audio tracks, only one subtitle language, or no selectable alternative at all. The labels and exact control location can also differ by device.

Check for audio description
If the spoken language seems correct but a narrator is describing actions, facial expressions, or scenes, you may have selected an audio description track. Audio description is a separate narration track, not simply another subtitle or menu language. In the Audio menu, select the ordinary preferred-language track rather than the version marked for audio description.
Test another title
Play a different movie or episode and inspect its available tracks. If the problem repeatedly affects only one title, note the title, season, episode, device, and exact audio and subtitle track names shown in the menu. That pattern could reflect title-specific track availability or playback state; it does not by itself prove that the title or Max has a confirmed defect.
2. Correct the Max profile’s display language
If the menus—rather than the voices—are changing language, edit the active Max profile:
On a phone, tablet, or computer
- Select your profile.
- Choose Edit Profiles.
- Select the affected profile.
- Open Display Language.
- Choose the desired language and save the change if Max presents a save option.
On a TV or streaming device
- Open the profile selector.
- Select the edit icon for the profile in use.
- Open Display Language.
- Choose the desired language.
Max stores display language with the profile and uses that preference across devices. If the interface changes on your television, phone, and computer, the profile setting is a stronger suspect than a single device’s cache.

Check that the intended profile is active
On phones, tablets, and computers, Max generally opens to the last-used profile. On TV devices, behavior can differ depending on whether the last-used profile was a Kids or Adult profile. On a shared account, another household member may have changed the active profile’s display language or left a different profile selected.

3. Check device caption and accessibility settings
If captions keep turning on, refuse to stay off, or return after you change them inside Max, inspect the device’s own subtitle, caption, or accessibility settings. Max states that it follows some device-level subtitle and caption preferences, so changing the setting only in the Max player may not be enough.
The path depends on the platform. Look for settings named Captions, Subtitles, Closed Captions, Accessibility, or Audio Description in your TV, streaming stick, phone, tablet, or operating system settings. Turn off any device-wide caption or audio-description preference that you do not want, then fully close and reopen Max.
This step is especially relevant when the issue is isolated to one television or streaming device but does not occur on your other devices.
4. Refresh Max’s app state
If the selected track keeps changing back after you set it correctly, refresh the app before changing more account settings. Max’s troubleshooting guidance recommends the following sequence:
- Sign out of Max. Then sign back in.
- Restart the device. Use a full restart rather than merely turning off the screen if your platform provides that option.
- Update the Max app. Install any available update from your device’s app store.
- Clear the app cache and data where your platform supports it.
- Uninstall and reinstall Max if the issue continues.
Clearing data or reinstalling may remove downloaded content and require you to sign in again. These are reset and troubleshooting measures, not a guaranteed permanent language lock. Max does not document cache clearing as a way to permanently preserve a preferred audio track.

Android TV
On Android TV, Max documents clearing its cache and data through the device’s app settings. The wording varies by television and streaming-device manufacturer, but the route is generally similar to Settings → Apps → Max → Storage → Clear cache, followed, if necessary, by Clear data. Confirm the labels on your particular device before proceeding.
Android mobile devices
On Android phones and tablets, use the Max app’s entry in the system app settings to clear cache or data, then reopen Max. If that does not help, uninstall and reinstall the app.
Recommended Free Tools
On other platforms, use the device maker’s documented app-repair, restart, update, or reinstall controls. Do not assume that a cache-clearing path from Android TV applies to Roku, Apple TV, Fire TV, game consoles, or smart-TV software.
5. Check VPN, proxy, and network location issues
Network location is a secondary check, not the proven explanation for every language switch. It becomes more relevant if you are traveling, using a VPN or proxy, or seeing region-related availability errors at the same time as the language problem.
- Disable any VPN, proxy, or anonymization service.
- Restart your modem and router.
- Restart the device running Max.
- Try Max again without the VPN or proxy.
- If Max still identifies your location incorrectly, contact your internet service provider.
Max’s regional troubleshooting guidance says that an IP address can be blocked or incorrectly identify a user’s location. That guidance is primarily about regional access, so do not use a VPN to obtain different language tracks or assume that a VPN is a fix for ordinary audio-track switching.

Use the pattern of the problem to find the cause
It happens only on one movie or episode
Open the Audio and Subtitles menu and record the tracks available for that title. Test another title on the same device. If only one program is affected, keep a note of the season, episode, device, and before-and-after track names before contacting Max.
It happens on every title on one device
Check that device’s accessibility and caption settings, then sign out, restart, update Max, and clear the app state if supported. This pattern points more toward the device, app installation, or local stored state than toward the Max profile.
It happens on every device
Check the active profile and its Display Language setting. Also verify that everyone using the account is opening the intended profile. A preference that follows you from a television to a phone and computer is less likely to be limited to one app installation.
Only subtitles keep returning
Reset subtitles to Off in the player, then inspect the device’s caption and accessibility settings. A device-level caption preference may be reapplying itself when Max starts playback.
The language changes after playback resumes
Set the audio and subtitle tracks after the title is fully playing, then test whether pausing, leaving the title, or starting the next episode causes the change. If it does, record exactly when the switch happens. This timing is useful to Max support and helps distinguish a title-specific playback issue from a general profile setting.

What information to give Max support
If none of the steps works, report a reproducible pattern rather than simply saying that Max is “randomly” changing languages. Include:
- Device make and model
- Operating-system or TV-platform version
- Max app version, if visible
- Title, season, and episode affected
- Whether spoken audio, subtitles, captions, audio description, or menus changed
- The track selected before the switch and the track selected afterward
- Whether another title behaves normally
- Whether the issue occurs on another device
- Whether a VPN, proxy, or anonymization service is enabled
- What happened after signing out, restarting, updating, clearing data, or reinstalling
This information allows support to investigate the specific title, platform, profile, and playback sequence without assuming that every language switch has the same cause.
What not to assume
- Do not treat user reports as proof of a universal, confirmed Max language-switching bug.
- Do not assume that changing the television’s global language will change Max’s audio track.
- Do not use a VPN as a way to obtain language tracks that Max does not offer for your title or region.
- Do not expect clearing cache to permanently lock your preferred audio or subtitle selection.
- Do not confuse audio description with a foreign-language audio track; both are selected from playback audio options but serve different purposes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Max change the spoken language but not the menus?
The spoken track is selected in the title’s in-player Audio menu, while menus use the active profile’s Display Language setting. Reset the audio track during playback rather than changing the profile language.
Why do subtitles keep turning back on in Max?
Reset subtitles to Off in the Audio and Subtitles menu, then check the device’s own caption, subtitle, and accessibility settings. Max can follow some device-level caption preferences.
Why is someone narrating what happens on screen?
You likely selected an audio-description track. Open the playback Audio menu and choose the ordinary preferred-language track instead of the version marked for audio description.
Should I use a VPN to get different Max language tracks?
No. Max’s regional troubleshooting guidance recommends disabling VPNs, proxies, and anonymization services when location is misidentified. Track availability also varies by title and region.
Will clearing Max’s cache permanently stop language switching?
Not necessarily. Clearing cache or data is an official troubleshooting step that can remove stale app state, but Max does not document it as a permanent language-lock feature.
The Bottom Line
Fix the problem at the level where it occurs: reset audio or subtitles in the player, change menu language in the active Max profile, check device accessibility settings for recurring captions or narration, and then refresh the app. If the issue follows your profile across devices or affects a specific title repeatedly, document the exact pattern and send it to Max support.
