GULEN: Devoted to Education & Dialogue is a 90-minute documentary about Fethullah Gülen, the education and dialogue network known as Hizmet, and the political rupture that pushed many followers into exile. It premiered worldwide on YouTube on October 17, 2026. Built from 35 voices in 14 countries and arranged in nine thematic chapters, the film presents Gülen’s ideas alongside the Turkish government’s security allegations and the movement’s own denial. Its central question is how a transnational civil-society project can survive trauma, prosecutions and the death of its spiritual leader.
What is GULEN: Devoted to Education & Dialogue about?
The film is a posthumous international portrait of Gülen and the movement usually called Hizmet. It follows the ideals that supporters associate with him—schools, moral education, scientific inquiry, interfaith dialogue and peace—then examines the political conflict that transformed those institutions into the subject of a sweeping state crackdown.
Nine thematic chapters bring together educators, scholars, activists and other participants from 14 countries. The film addresses:

Ahmet Ünal directed the documentary. Turkish Minute identifies Raindrops Productions LLC as producer and Rıdvan Kızıltepe as coordinator. The Alliance for Shared Values, a Hizmet-associated organization, has promoted the film; that affiliation is relevant when viewers weigh its emphasis and framing.

Who was Fethullah Gülen?
Gülen was a Turkish Islamic scholar and preacher whose ideas inspired a loose, international network of schools, charities, businesses and dialogue groups. His followers generally use the name Hizmet, meaning “service,” for this civic project. The network’s institutions operated in more than 100 countries, according to the Associated Press in 2024, including 150 taxpayer-funded U.S. charter schools.
Gülen lived in the United States for decades and died at age 83 in October 2024. Supporters describe him as a spiritual and intellectual guide rather than a conventional party leader. After his death, the question is not only what his writings mean, but how communities built around personal trust and mentorship can make decisions without him.
How did Hizmet become entangled with Turkish politics?
For years, Gülen-linked figures and Erdoğan’s governing movement were allies in Turkey. That relationship broke down amid policy disputes and corruption investigations. Erdoğan then accused Gülenists of creating a “parallel state” inside the police and judiciary.

Turkey blamed Gülen and his followers for the attempted coup of July 15, 2016. Gülen denied directing the attempt and condemned the coup. The documentary presents this attribution as contested rather than an established fact: Turkish authorities’ security allegations, Gülen’s denial, independently reported historical context and civil-society interpretations are different kinds of evidence and should not be treated as interchangeable.
What happened to the movement after the 2016 coup attempt?
The post-coup period brought mass dismissals, institution closures, prosecutions and exile. Turkey also sought Gülen’s extradition from the United States. The campaign has continued well beyond the initial emergency measures.
In July 2026, Justice Minister Akın Gürlek reported the following figures:

| Measure | Figure reported by the justice minister | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| People who had faced legal proceedings | 720,338 | Minister’s July 2026 statement; not an independently audited total |
| People convicted | 127,102 | Minister’s July 2026 statement; the figure does not by itself describe every case or sentence |
| Ongoing investigations or trials | 83,404 | Minister’s July 2026 statement |
| People in prison | 10,485 | Minister’s July 2026 statement |
These numbers describe the government’s accounting of cases associated with alleged Gülen links, not a neutral census of wrongdoing. They also do not resolve the underlying dispute over responsibility for the coup attempt. For movement members and relatives, the consequences have included displacement, professional loss and long-term legal uncertainty.
How does the documentary present the competing interpretations?
GULEN places the movement’s stated education-and-dialogue mission beside the state’s account of a clandestine power structure. That approach matters because the same schools, associations and professional networks can be read in sharply different ways: supporters see voluntary civil society, while Turkish authorities have described infiltration of state institutions.
The film’s interview mix is international rather than limited to one Turkish courtroom or government archive. Prof. Scott C. Alexander of Catholic Theological Union in Chicago and the Alliance for Shared Values says many participants were traumatized but that the movement is surviving. Anwar Alam, a scholar of international relations and Islamic movements, argues that Hizmet sought to deepen democracy while the state reacted against a civil society it no longer controlled. Those comments are interpretations from named participants, not independent adjudication of the security case.

How does the film compare with Jon Pahl’s biography?
A book-length biography is a useful companion because it gives readers sustained historical context rather than a sequence of filmed voices.

What future does the film imagine for Hizmet?
The documentary treats leadership transition as a practical problem, not merely a symbolic one. Communities spread across countries must decide which educational and charitable activities to preserve, how to support people affected by exile and prosecutions, and how younger members should relate to a tradition formed around Gülen’s authority.

Women’s participation receives specific attention because the movement’s future depends on who can lead schools, associations and family networks in the diaspora. The film also asks whether dialogue institutions can maintain credibility after a conflict in which both state power and civil-society autonomy became central issues. The Alliance for Shared Values called Gülen a “towering figure of faith, wisdom, intellectual and spiritual leadership” after his death, while the continuing crackdown ensures that his legacy remains politically contested.
Why this documentary matters now
GULEN arrives when the movement’s founder is gone but the institutions and legal consequences associated with his name remain active. Its value is less in delivering a final verdict than in showing why education, dialogue, state power and accountability cannot be separated in the Gülen story. Viewers should keep the film’s advocacy context in mind while also recognizing that the events it discusses have affected hundreds of thousands of people and reshaped a global network.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does “Hizmet” mean?
“Hizmet” is a Turkish word commonly translated as “service.” Followers use it to describe a faith-informed civic approach centered on education, charity, professional cooperation and dialogue rather than a formal political party.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why does the documentary use voices from so many countries?
The geographic spread shows that Gülen-linked communities developed different local institutions and experiences outside Turkey. It also lets the film examine exile and leadership succession as international questions, not only as disputes within Turkish politics.
Is the film intended as a court finding about the 2016 coup attempt?
No. It is a documentary portrait that includes competing accounts and commentary from participants. Its interviews cannot substitute for an independent judicial determination of who organized or directed the coup attempt.
Is this a biography or a political documentary?
It combines both forms. Gülen’s ideas and life provide the narrative foundation, while the main dramatic tension comes from the Erdoğan–Gülen split, the post-2016 crackdown and the movement’s survival after his death.
