Google TV Freeplay is a built-in, ad-supported live-TV guide for viewers in the United States. Its channels cost nothing to watch and, for Google’s built-in lineup, you do not need to install another app, create a separate account or pay a subscription. The “expansion” most often associated with Freeplay was a 2024 rebrand and interface update—not a newly announced 2026 service launch.
What is Google TV Freeplay?
Freeplay is Google TV’s built-in collection of free, ad-supported live channels. It is one part of Google TV’s broader Live experience, which can also show channels from outside services. Google’s U.S. live-TV guide distinguishes its built-in channels from partner channels.
- Freeplay: Google TV’s built-in live channels, available without a separate app installation, sign-up or subscription.
- Partner-app channels: Free channels from services such as Pluto TV, Tubi, Plex and Haystack News. You may need to install the relevant app; its own account and playback requirements can apply.
- Paid live TV: Services such as YouTube TV, Sling TV and Philo can integrate with Google TV but require a paid subscription.
Freeplay is primarily for live-channel browsing. It is not a promise of a complete premium on-demand library, DVR, ad-free viewing or the same local stations available over an antenna.
What changed with Freeplay, and how many channels are there?
In September 2024, news reports described Google’s existing free-channel experience being branded Freeplay, with a more prominent entry point and browsing features such as genre sorting, favorites and recently watched channels. Reports at the time put the built-in lineup at about 150 channels, with one report citing 157. Those are historical reported counts, not a current guaranteed total. Google’s current support page lists channels but does not state one permanent total in its page text. The count also depends on what is being counted: built-in Freeplay channels, channels supplied by partner apps, or every free channel reachable through Google TV. Google’s 2023 announcement of more than 800 free channels covered access across multiple providers, not the built-in Freeplay lineup alone.

How to find and watch Freeplay
- From the Google TV home screen, select Live.
- Browse the guide and select a channel to start watching.
- If your device shows a Google TV Freeplay app, open it to browse the same built-in experience.
- You may also see Freeplay channels in recommendations.
Menu names and placement can vary by device, language, country and software version. Google says the device software should be up to date and recommends installing the latest Google TV Home app if Freeplay is not working.

What “free” means—and what it does not
There is no subscription fee for Google’s built-in Freeplay channels, but the programming is ad-supported. Google says content providers may use information such as a device’s advertising ID or IP address for advertising purposes. “Free” therefore means no charge to access the built-in channel service; it does not mean ad-free or equivalent to local broadcast TV.
How to favorite channels and filter mature content
Add or remove a favorite
- Open the Live tab or Google TV Freeplay app, then open the channel guide.
- Highlight and select a channel name. A star indicates that it has been added to Favorites.
- Open Favorites at the top of the guide to find saved channels. Select a favorited channel again to remove its star.
Hide channels that may show mature content
- Open Settings.
- Select Accounts & Profiles, then choose the relevant account.
- Select Content restrictions, then Google TV channels.
- Turn on or off Hide channels that may play content for mature audiences.
This is a channel-filtering control, not a guarantee that every unsuitable program or scene will be blocked.

Freeplay compared with other free-TV options
| Option | Best fit | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Google TV Freeplay | Google TV owners who want built-in live channels with minimal setup. | U.S.-only according to Google’s documentation; ad-supported, and its lineup can change. |
| Pluto TV | Viewers who want a dedicated free, ad-supported channel and on-demand service. | Google lists it as a partner; accessing its channels through Google TV may require the app. Pluto TV |
| Tubi | Viewers focused more on free on-demand movies and shows, with live channels also available in supported contexts. | It is a partner service, rather than the built-in Freeplay lineup. Tubi |
| Plex | Viewers who want free live and on-demand content alongside personal-media-library features. | May involve more setup than someone needs just to watch Freeplay. Plex |
| The Roku Channel | Viewers already using Roku’s platform and free-TV catalog. | It belongs to Roku’s ecosystem, not Google TV’s built-in Freeplay experience. The Roku Channel |
| Antenna TV | Viewers who prioritize local over-the-air broadcasts and have suitable reception. | Requires an antenna and tuner; it does not provide Freeplay’s national niche channels, and reception depends on location. |
| Paid live-TV services | Viewers who need broader live programming, premium networks or a more conventional cable replacement. | YouTube TV, Sling TV and Philo require subscriptions; channel coverage and features vary by service. |
Google’s platform availability guidance says features vary by country, language, device and software. It identifies Freeplay as U.S.-only; other markets may have different Live-tab partner arrangements or a different Free experience. Google TV and Android TV menus are not identical, so comparable live-TV features on an Android TV device do not guarantee the same Freeplay interface or channel list. See Google’s Android TV live-TV help.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why Freeplay may not appear
Start with the most likely causes: the device is outside the United States, its software or Google TV Home app is outdated, or the manufacturer’s interface differs. Connectivity, account or device configuration can also interfere. A channel from Pluto TV, Tubi, Plex or another provider may require that service’s app rather than appearing as a built-in Freeplay channel.
