YouTube Premium Lite expanded to the U.S. in March 2025, and YouTube later added background play and downloads. It remains a market-dependent, lower-priced option for people who mainly watch creator videos—not a fully ad-free version of YouTube. Prices and availability vary by country, and the plan still has important limits for music, Shorts, and search or browsing.
What the wider availability announcement covered
On March 5, 2025, YouTube said it would begin expanding its Premium Lite pilot to users in the United States. At the time, it announced a U.S. price of $7.99 per month and said access would extend in the following weeks to all users in its then-current pilot countries: Thailand, Germany, and Australia. That announcement described a dated expansion, not a global launch. YouTube’s March 5, 2025 announcement also reported that YouTube Music and Premium had passed 125 million subscribers globally, including trials; this was not a Premium Lite subscriber count.
Google later announced Premium Lite in India on September 29, 2025, with rollout underway and full availability expected over the following weeks. The announcement gave India’s price as ₹89 per month. Google’s India announcement is specific to that market and date.
Where Premium Lite is available and what it costs
Premium Lite availability and pricing are country-specific. The announcements establish expansion in particular markets at particular dates, but do not provide a complete current country list for standalone subscriptions. What Premium Lite includes now
Premium Lite is a lower-priced subscription aimed at people who mainly watch creator content. Most videos can be watched without ads, and YouTube announced on February 24, 2026 that Background Play and Downloads were coming to the plan. The company said the features would roll out over the coming weeks wherever Premium Lite was available. YouTube’s feature announcement

That update means launch-era descriptions saying Lite has no background play or downloads are out of date. The newer features do not make every type of content ad-free, downloadable, or playable in the background.
What Lite does not cover
Premium Lite is not equivalent to full YouTube Premium. Google says ads may still appear on music content and Shorts, as well as while searching or browsing. Its current comparison also says music videos, concerts, and songs may still contain ads and are not available for offline playback or in the background. The precise limits are subject to the current terms for your market. Google’s current comparison

- Consider Lite if you mainly watch creator videos and want a less expensive option, accepting that ads may remain in music, Shorts, and search or browsing.
- Consider full Premium if ad-free music and offline or background playback for music are important. Google positions full individual Premium as covering all YouTube and YouTube Music content.
- Compare local offers before choosing: the listed prices above are examples from specific markets and dates, not a universal rate card.
