Trailblazers, a 40-minute documentary from Quantum Leap Productions, brings Troy and Powell “Gil” Gillenwater back to the 1982 journey that took them roughly 810 miles across Arizona. At the October 14, 2026 Sedona International Film Festival screening, the brothers and filmmaker Kristin Atwell discussed the two-year preparation, improvised route, hard weather and encounters that shaped the walk from Guadalupe Canyon to the Utah line. Their expedition is also remembered as an early spark for the Arizona National Scenic Trail, the modern 800-mile route divided into 43 passages.
What was the Gillenwater brothers’ 1982 trek across Arizona?
Troy and Gil Gillenwater walked from Guadalupe Canyon on Arizona’s southeastern border to the Utah line near Kanab between February 28 and May 3, 1982. The crossing covered about 810 miles and followed no single established trail. They spent two years preparing, then traveled with two approximately 900-pound mules, Grandma and Judy, and later adopted a stray dog they named Boogers.
Troy described the route as roughly 30% bushwhacking, 30% existing trail and 30% dirt roads. Map “shortcuts” repeatedly proved costly, turning the expedition into a test of judgment as much as endurance. The brothers dealt with snow, the challenge of locating water, wary ranchers and encounters with smugglers. In the Bradshaw Mountains they rested at miner Curly McKibbin’s cabin before continuing north through Williams toward the Grand Canyon’s South Rim.

Why did the mules stop before the Grand Canyon?
Grand Canyon terrain made continuing with the pack animals impractical. The mules were boarded in Camp Verde, and the brothers completed the final leg on foot, crossing into Utah on May 3.

What is the documentary Trailblazers about?
The film combines archival footage with present-day interviews in a 40-minute account of the crossing. Its structure is part road movie and part time machine: the brothers’ personal memories are set against landscapes and routes that predate today’s trail infrastructure. Gil describes the discipline of walking in elemental terms: “All you had to do was put one foot in front of the other, and that was your life. And the simplicity in that is just liberating.”
Troy’s central lesson is equally practical: “One of the biggest lessons was that everything changes. I mean, yeah, you’re freezing cold, but it’s not going to be that way forever. So just persevere.” Arizona Highways editor Robert Stieve says the brothers were also trying to “walk back in time,” following the footsteps of Indigenous explorers and pioneers.

Did the Gillenwaters’ walk inspire the Arizona National Scenic Trail?
The Arizona Trail Association presents the trek as an early spark that helped make a cross-state trail imaginable. Dale Shewalter had conceived the idea of an Arizona-spanning trail in the 1970s; the modern Arizona National Scenic Trail now runs about 800 miles from the Mexico border to the Utah border in 43 passages. The film connects the Gillenwaters’ route with that later public-land legacy without suggesting that their 1982 journey alone created the trail.
Where and when can you see Trailblazers?
The Sedona International Film Festival scheduled two October 14, 2026 screenings at the Mary D. What does the Gillenwater story add to Arizona trail history?
The crossing shows what a statewide route looked like before it had the continuity and passage system hikers recognize today. Improvised navigation, dependence on pack animals and repeated encounters with people living along the route reveal the logistical work hidden by a line on a modern map. Trailblazers preserves that perspective while linking one family’s expedition to a public trail now spanning the state.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who produced the Trailblazers documentary?
Quantum Leap Productions produced the 40-minute film, with filmmaker Kristin Atwell participating in the Sedona screening discussion alongside Troy and Gil Gillenwater.
Can I retrace the 1982 route exactly on the modern Arizona Trail?
Not necessarily. The brothers’ route mixed bushwhacking, existing trails and dirt roads, while the modern trail is organized into 43 designated passages; some 1982 segments may not correspond to today’s alignment or access conditions.
What is the most useful resource for planning a modern Arizona Trail trip?
The 388-page guidebook is the stronger starting point for passage-by-passage planning and context. Add the 126-map topo set or compatible Avenza maps when detailed field navigation is the priority.
Why were the Gillenwater brothers carrying mules?
Grandma and Judy carried equipment during the long crossing, reducing the amount the brothers had to carry themselves. The animals had to be left in Camp Verde before the brothers entered the Grand Canyon area on foot.
