FFmpeg’s reconnect options only address particular kinds of input failures. First determine whether FFmpeg is reading a replay, publishing a stream, or doing something else; then match the error to the input protocol and failure type. A retry option cannot make an expired or inaccessible URL valid, and reconnecting at end-of-file can make a finite replay loop when you meant it to stop.
First identify what FFmpeg is trying to reconnect
“FFmpeg reconnect to YouTube live replay” can describe different problems. FFmpeg may be reading or downloading a replay, playing media locally, or sending an output stream to YouTube. Reconnecting an input is not the same as recovering a failed output.
- Reading a replay: The failure is on the input side, at the resource supplied with
-i. HTTP reconnect options may apply if that input is actually HTTP. - Publishing a stream: The failure is on the output side. Input reconnect flags do not, by themselves, repair a broken publishing connection.
- Opening a webpage: A YouTube watch-page URL is not necessarily a direct media input. The official FFmpeg documentation covered here does not establish that a watch-page URL can be opened directly or explain how to extract a playable media URL.
Before changing flags, capture the exact command, FFmpeg version and build, input URL type or protocol, and the complete error log around the failure. Redact stream keys, cookies, authorization headers, and signed URL tokens before sharing the command or logs.
Choose the reconnect option by the error
FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol options describe different events, not one universal retry switch. Apply them only after confirming the failing input uses HTTP and checking that the installed build supports the options. FFmpeg describes reconnect as: “Reconnect automatically when disconnected before EOF is hit.” That concerns a disconnect before the input reaches end-of-file.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Observed failure | Option to investigate | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| HTTP input disconnects before it reaches EOF | reconnect |
Confirm the log shows a disconnect before EOF, rather than a completed replay or a rejected request. |
| TCP or TLS error while connecting | reconnect_on_network_error |
Verify that the error is a connection-time network error and that retrying could plausibly work. |
| HTTP response status such as 401, 403, or 404 | reconnect_on_http_error |
Inspect the status and investigate URL validity, access, or expiration first. Select only appropriate response codes or classes; retrying every response is not a fix for an invalid or unauthorized request. |
| Input is streamed or non-seekable | reconnect_streamed |
Establish whether the input is non-seekable; this option addresses that input characteristic. |
| Input reaches EOF | reconnect_at_eof |
Use only if treating EOF as an error and reconnecting is intentional, such as for a live or endless stream. A finite replay normally has a legitimate end. |
Reconnect behavior is bounded by retry and delay settings. Set deliberate limits, and avoid treating retries as a substitute for diagnosing the actual status or transport error. These options are specific to HTTP; if the input protocol is different, HTTP flags may not address the failure.
Inspect the command and log safely
- Record the full command. Keep the order of options and the
-iinput visible, but replace any secrets with placeholders before sharing it. - Record the build. Capture the output of
ffmpeg -version. Option availability can depend on the installed version and build, so check its documentation or help rather than assuming a flag exists. - Identify the input. Determine whether
-ireceives a direct HTTP media or playlist URL, a webpage, or another protocol. Do not publish tokens embedded in a signed URL. - Keep the complete failure context. Include the log lines immediately before and after the error, including any HTTP status, protocol, or EOF indication. A single last-line error often does not distinguish a dropped connection from a rejected or completed request.
- Separate input from output. If FFmpeg is relaying one source to YouTube, note which side failed. An input read error and an output publishing error require different investigation.
There is no single verified command for this case because the command, build, input protocol, and error are not specified. Add an option only after matching it to the observed failure and confirming support in your installed FFmpeg.

When retries are not the answer
HTTP 401, 403, or 404
These are HTTP responses, not proof of a transient disconnect. Check whether the URL is current and accessible through a permitted access path, and whether its authorization or signed token has expired. A retry may repeat the same rejection; the reconnect option cannot restore access or turn an invalid URL into a valid media input.
EOF on a finished replay
EOF means the input ended. For finite replay content, that may be the correct result. Enabling reconnect_at_eof can cause FFmpeg to treat normal completion as an error and reconnect rather than stop. Use it only when repeating the input is the intended behavior.

Failure on the publishing side
If FFmpeg reads the replay successfully but loses its connection while sending an output to YouTube, input-side HTTP reconnect settings target the wrong part of the command. Use the log to determine whether reading or publishing failed before changing configuration.
Test network and playback conditions separately
YouTube’s general playback troubleshooting recommends trying another connection, reducing wireless interference or competing network use, lowering playback quality where applicable, and reconnecting or restarting the playback device. These checks can help isolate a network or player issue, but they do not establish that an FFmpeg process failed for the same reason or guarantee a fix.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Try the playback or connection on another network to see whether the symptom changes.
- Reduce wireless interference and competing network activity during the test.
- If you are testing playback in a player, try a lower quality setting where available.
- Reconnect or restart the playback device, then compare its result with FFmpeg’s logs.
Make one change at a time and rerun with the same minimal command where possible. Compare the new log with the original; do not assume a fix worked unless the rerun confirms it. A wired connection can be a useful way to test Wi-Fi interference, but buying a cable is not an established fix for this FFmpeg error.

If your real goal is to keep your own uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube around the clock, rather than retrieve a YouTube replay with FFmpeg, StreamNeo is a different approach: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
