Kamani Confident is the first-generation University of Virginia student highlighted in the documentary Admission Possible. Local coverage identifies Confident as a former senior at New York City’s Humanities Preparatory Academy, while UVA Arts lists her as “UVA ’28.” The film follows her and six other high-achieving, first-generation applicants as they manage applications, financial-aid questions, family expectations and changing admissions policies. It also captures the moment volunteer counselor Bill Short suggested UVA to Confident and the later news that she had been admitted.
Who is the UVA student in Admission Possible?
Kamani Confident is the student whose college journey leads to UVA in Admission Possible. She attended Humanities Preparatory Academy in New York City before enrolling at the University of Virginia, where UVA Arts identifies her as part of the Class of 2028.
At the Charlottesville screening, Confident joined Short and John Rojas, assistant director of UVA’s Hoos First initiative, for a discussion about the film and the transition to college. The application process and money

Volunteer counselor Bill Short is the central mentor. How does Kamani’s UVA story appear in the film?
The documentary includes two moments that connect Short’s advising directly to Confident’s outcome: his conversation suggesting UVA and the later scene in which he learns she has been accepted. Both scenes received applause at the Charlottesville screening.

Cooper linked the documentary’s subject to the work of community organizations that help people pursue education, advance careers and improve financial security. “Talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not,” Cooper said, arguing that encouragement, resources and meaningful pathways can affect an entire family’s future.
