First Comes Love: Nakabingwit is a 2026 National Film Board of Canada documentary by Joella Cabalu about three Filipina–white couples in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. Its answer to “Can love be enough?” is deliberately unsettled: love starts the relationship, but honest conversations about race, class, colourism, family history and white privilege determine whether the partners can grow together. Interviews with the couples are interwoven with playful, fictionalized romantic-comedy scenes, turning familiar meet-cute and happily-ever-after formulas into questions about who gets to feel at home, who carries the explanatory burden and how repair actually happens.
What is First Comes Love: Nakabingwit about?

How does the film combine documentary and romantic comedy?
Alongside observational and interview footage, actors Gabrielle Jacinto and David Lennon perform fictionalized scenes in a rom-com style. These sequences are playful rather than literal reconstructions. They let Cabalu stage the conventions audiences recognize—instant chemistry, charming misunderstandings and the promise of a tidy ending—then interrupt those conventions with the harder realities the couples describe.

Nakabingwit literally refers to catching a big fish. In the colloquial usage discussed by Cabalu and Justine Yu, it can describe a Filipina woman who has “caught” a rich or white husband. That phrase carries more than teasing: it reflects class aspiration, gendered judgment, colonial hierarchy and the way diaspora communities may read a relationship through money and whiteness.

Using the word as the title allows the film to confront that inheritance instead of hiding it. The couples are not asked to prove that their love is pure or politically uncomplicated. They are asked how they understand the stories attached to their pairing, which parts they reject and how they might rewrite them together.

Why does the film focus on conversation rather than a romantic verdict?
Cabalu treats communication as an ongoing practice, not a single cathartic scene. Partners have to recognize when a request for explanation has become an unfair demand, while also resisting the idea that discomfort is a reason to avoid the subject. What should viewers expect from the film’s tone?
The subject matter is serious, but the form is not solemn throughout. What does the director hope audiences do after watching?
Cabalu has said she hopes the film sparks conversations among couples and people in many kinds of relationships. She emphasizes possibility: people can discuss difficult subjects in ways that are healthy, generative and loving rather than destructive.
Is this a conventional romantic comedy or a straight documentary?
