The first reported Chromecast with Google TV update of 2025 began rolling out on January 9, 2025. Build STTL.241013.003 brought the November 2024 Android security patch and general bug fixes to Chromecast with Google TV devices—but it kept them on Android 12. It was a maintenance update, not the long-awaited Android 14 upgrade. This is a historical rollout, not the latest firmware release.
What was in the January 2025 update?
The contemporaneous rollout report identified the update as build STTL.241013.003, replacing STTL.240812.006.N1. Its reported download was about 72.25 MB; size can vary. The update was reported for Chromecast with Google TV HD and 4K models.

The build number, Android version and security-patch level describe different things. A new firmware build does not, by itself, mean the device has moved to a new Android version. In this case, the Android base remained version 12. The January 9 report described the build and its changelog; Google’s firmware release notes track device firmware separately.
Not Android 14—and not a new interface
Android 14 was not part of this release. At the time, the upgrade was still pending; Google TV users should not interpret the January update’s arrival, or the lack of Android 14 afterward, as an installation error.

The documented changes were a newer security patch plus broadly described bug fixes and performance improvements. There is no verified basis to attribute a redesigned interface, new Google TV features, or a specific fix for an individual problem to this build. Nor does the changelog establish that every device would feel faster or resolve storage issues.
Android 14 arrived separately later in 2025. Contemporary coverage reported an initial rollout in March, followed by issues and a further rollout in June; that later release was distinct from the January maintenance patch. How to check for the update
- From the Google TV home screen, open All settings.
- Go to System, then About.
- Select System update and follow any on-screen prompts.
Google says Chromecast with Google TV updates do not appear in the Google Home app; check from the device’s TV interface instead. Updates are normally downloaded over the air when the streaming device is powered and connected to the internet. Opening System update lets you check whether an update is available, but does not guarantee that a staged rollout can be forced immediately. If it has not arrived or the installation stalls
Google rolls firmware out in stages, so devices may not receive the same release at the same time. If the update is not offered, check that the Chromecast has power and internet access, then return to Settings → System → About → System update later. A restart and another check may help; repeatedly unplugging the device during an active installation is not a good way to prompt an update.

Google says an update typically takes about 10–12 minutes. Keep the device powered and connected while it runs. Casting is unavailable during installation, and the LED pulses while the device receives the update.
If installation appears stuck, Google’s recovery sequence is to disconnect the Chromecast from its power source, wait one minute, then plug it back in and let the update process restart. Removing the HDMI connection alone does not reboot the device. If trouble continues, check the connection and consult Google support; a factory reset is a last resort because you will need to set the device up again.

If the TV shows no signal or a black screen afterward, first confirm the correct HDMI input, use the supplied power adapter and cable, and try disconnecting power for one minute. You can also try another HDMI port or connect directly to the TV rather than through an AVR, soundbar or HDMI switch. These are general display troubleshooting steps, not evidence that this update caused a black-screen problem. Google’s no-signal and black-screen guide has further checks.

The report concerns Chromecast with Google TV, including its HD and 4K editions. It should not be confused with firmware for the original Chromecast, Chromecast (2nd or 3rd generation), Chromecast Ultra, Chromecast Audio or Google TV Streamer. Google lists those device families separately in its firmware documentation. The current documentation may show newer releases rather than every historical rollout state.
