Filmmaker Hellmut Schlingensiepen is touring U.S. college campuses with The Cloud of Witnesses, a documentary that argues Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s 1930–31 experience in Harlem was essential to his later opposition to racism, antisemitism and Nazism. A documented stop at Washburn University in Topeka took place on October 11, 2026, followed by a question-and-answer session with Schlingensiepen.
The film is not the same production as the 2024 dramatized biopic Bonhoeffer: Pastor. Spy. Assassin. Its approach is documentary-based, centering historical interpretation and Bonhoeffer’s encounters with Black Christian life in New York rather than presenting a gun-centered resistance thriller.
Who is the filmmaker touring the United States with a Bonhoeffer film?
Hellmut Schlingensiepen is the director of The Cloud of Witnesses, a documentary being presented through a campus-tour model. A secondary report says the project has been seeking a formal U.S. distributor, so availability may depend on institutional screenings rather than a regular consumer streaming release.

Schlingensiepen’s film treats Bonhoeffer’s American visit as a formative chapter. The documentary’s title refers to a broad community of witnesses and interpreters around Bonhoeffer’s life, while its central historical question is how his time in Harlem changed the way he understood racial injustice and persecution.

What is The Cloud of Witnesses about?
The documentary’s argument is that Bonhoeffer’s months in Harlem gave him a direct view of American racism and exposed him to a Black theological tradition that shaped his moral and political thinking. The film connects that experience to his later rejection of antisemitism and his resistance to Hitler’s regime.
PBS accounts of Bonhoeffer’s American period record that he studied at Union Theological Seminary and volunteered at Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem. They also describe his recognition of parallels between racial discrimination in the United States and the persecution of Jews under Nazism. The documentary makes those connections the organizing framework rather than treating Harlem as a brief travel detail.
The book behind the Harlem focus
One of the project’s stated research foundations is Reggie Williams’s Bonhoeffer’s Black Jesus: Harlem Renaissance Theology and an Ethic of Resistance. The book examines how Harlem Renaissance theology and Black Christian resistance informed Bonhoeffer’s developing ethics. For viewers who want to follow the film’s intellectual route, it is the companion title most directly tied to the documentary’s premise.

Why did Topeka matter to this Bonhoeffer documentary?
Washburn University hosted the documented Topeka screening at 1731 SW Plass Avenue on October 11, 2026. The free event ran from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. and included Schlingensiepen for a post-screening Q&A, giving attendees an opportunity to ask the director about the film’s historical choices and Harlem emphasis.
The Topeka appearance also illustrates the documentary’s current route to audiences: universities and community institutions can host a screening and pair it with discussion, even while a broad commercial release remains unverified.
What did Bonhoeffer actually do in the resistance?
Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a German Lutheran pastor and theologian who opposed Nazism. The Associated Press reported that he helped arrange the passage of 14 Jews to safety in Switzerland. He also supported an unsuccessful plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler, but AP distinguishes that support from taking an operational role in the attempt.

That distinction matters because Bonhoeffer’s legacy is often reduced to a simple “pastor-spy-assassin” narrative. The Cloud of Witnesses instead asks readers to understand the ethical development behind his resistance, including the influence of what he witnessed in Harlem.
Is this the same film as Bonhoeffer: Pastor. Spy. Assassin.?
No. Schlingensiepen’s documentary and Todd Komarnicki’s 2024 biopic are separate productions with different formats and emphases.
| Film | Format and focus | What is verified about availability |
|---|---|---|
| The Cloud of Witnesses | Documentary centered on Bonhoeffer’s Harlem experience, racial justice and the formation of his resistance ethics | Campus-tour screenings are documented; a consumer streaming window is not verified |
| Bonhoeffer: Pastor. Spy. Assassin. | Dramatized biopic covering Bonhoeffer’s life and wartime resistance | Separate commercial film; availability varies by territory and platform |
| Bonhoeffer (Martin Doblmeier) | Earlier PBS documentary presenting Bonhoeffer’s life as a story of faith | Separate production from Schlingensiepen’s film |
The distinction became especially important after scholars and relatives criticized the biopic’s gun-centered marketing as historically misleading. Bonhoeffer great-nephew Ruggero Schleicher-Tappeser told AP, “It conveys a completely wrong image of the person of Bonhoeffer and his context.” Komarnicki said in a 2025 interview, “This film isn’t a call to violence—it’s a call to love.” Those comments concern the dramatized film, not Schlingensiepen’s documentary.

How should viewers interpret Bonhoeffer’s legacy now?
Bonhoeffer’s relatives have also pushed back against political distortion. AP reported that more than 80 descendants of his siblings signed a statement opposing far-right appropriations of his legacy. Their intervention reinforces the documentary’s emphasis on context: Bonhoeffer’s opposition to Hitler cannot be separated from his theology, his relationships with Black Christians in Harlem, or the danger faced by Jews under Nazi rule.
For viewers deciding which production to seek, the useful questions are scope and method. The Cloud of Witnesses is a documentary investigation of formation and influence; the Komarnicki film is a dramatized life story; Doblmeier’s PBS production is another documentary treatment with its own emphasis on faith. None should be treated as interchangeable.
Where can people see The Cloud of Witnesses?
The verified route is through organized screenings such as the Washburn University event. No confirmed consumer streaming date or nationwide theatrical schedule is established in the available information. Universities, churches and history organizations interested in hosting the film should look for announcements from the production or request screening information directly, rather than assuming a platform release.
