Which Bad Boys movie is best?
For this ranking, the main questions are how well each film uses the leads’ buddy-cop chemistry, how consistently its comedy and action work together, and whether its central premise feels fresh. The series’ appeal is the contrast between Mike’s cool confidence and Marcus’s more anxious, domestic outlook; the films vary in how much they add around that pairing.
1. Bad Boys (1995)
The original is the strongest starting point and the best-balanced entry. Miami detectives Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett investigate stolen heroin, and the case turns personal when a witness is kidnapped. That setup gives the partners a clear shared objective while letting their clashing styles drive the comedy and action.

2. Bad Boys for Life (2020)
The third film gives the familiar duo a new dynamic by bringing in AMMO, a new Miami Police Department division, as Mike and Marcus face the Aretas Cartel. The additional team members widen the story without displacing the partnership that makes the series work.

3. Bad Boys: Ride or Die (2024)
The fourth film puts Miami’s finest on the run after a scheme frames their late captain. The fugitive setup pushes Mike and Marcus into a different kind of predicament, but the familiar lead chemistry remains its main asset.

Associated Press critic Jake Coyle called the bond between Smith and Lawrence the key to the film, while describing its plotting as paint-by-numbers. He awarded it two and a half stars out of four; that is one critic’s rating, not an aggregate verdict. The combination makes Ride or Die lively, but less fresh than the two films above it. 4. Bad Boys II (2003)
The second film is the franchise’s most maximalist entry. Mike and Marcus pursue a drug lord from Miami to Cuba, while Marcus discovers that Mike is secretly dating his sister, Syd, played by Gabrielle Union. The action and comedy are deliberately outsized, and the added family complication gives the partnership another source of friction.

That scale is also why some viewers will rank Bad Boys II first: if huge set pieces matter more than a tight story, it is the natural pick. This ranking puts it fourth because spectacle and comic friction do not make its central story feel as fresh or controlled as the higher entries.
