On September 11, 2022, Elon Musk described Instagram as an “envy amplifier” in a brief post on Twitter, now X. He was replying to a video about envy—not announcing an Instagram policy, acquisition plan, or product proposal. The post is historical, not a new 2026 statement.
What Musk actually wrote
Musk’s entire comment was: “Instagram is an envy amplifier.” The sentence appeared on September 11, 2022, and did not include a longer explanation, evidence, or remedy.
Why he brought up Instagram
The post followed an excerpt shared by Austen Allred on September 10 featuring Charlie Munger, then Berkshire Hathaway’s vice chairman, discussing envy. Munger’s point, as contemporaneous coverage summarized it, was that people can take broad improvements in living standards for granted while focusing on what others have. Musk appeared to apply that broader observation to Instagram’s visual, comparison-heavy format. Fortune’s account of the exchange identifies the Munger clip as the immediate context.
What “envy amplifier” likely means
“Envy amplifier” is Musk’s rhetorical description, not an established technical or scientific term. In context, it can be read as a criticism of how Instagram presents selected images of appearance, travel, relationships, wealth, and achievement. Seeing those polished snapshots may encourage users to compare their own lives with other people’s most flattering presentations.

That interpretation fits Musk’s earlier comments that Instagram can make other people seem happier and better-looking than they really are. It remains interpretation, however: Musk did not define the phrase in his post, and the sentence does not prove that Instagram causes envy or mental-health harm for every user. Instagram is also used for self-expression, community, professional promotion, activism, and social connection.
How the “thirst trap” remark fits
In an August 2022 appearance on the Full Send podcast, Musk called Instagram a “next-level thirst trap.” He said he had used a private account and found himself taking selfies and seeking likes. The two phrases point to related but distinct complaints:

| Phrase | Emphasis | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| “Next-level thirst trap” | Attention-seeking, sexualized presentation, selfies, and validation through likes | A formal theory or proposed redesign |
| “Envy amplifier” | Social comparison and dissatisfaction triggered by other people’s apparently superior lives | A research finding or policy announcement |
Reports said Musk described having a private or “secret” Instagram account, reportedly used largely to open links. Accounts differed over whether it had zero followers or 54, so that detail is not settled; neither figure should be treated as verified. Tech Times’ contemporaneous report documents the conflicting descriptions.
A criticism that goes back to 2018
During a 2018 appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience, contemporaneous coverage reported that Musk said Instagram could make people appear happier and better-looking than they were. Taken together, the 2018 remarks, the August 2022 podcast comments, and the September 2022 post show a recurring personal criticism of appearance, attention, and comparison—not a sustained campaign against Instagram.

What the post did not mean
- It was not a scientific conclusion about Instagram’s effects.
- It did not identify a particular feature, study, algorithm, or product decision.
- It did not propose buying Meta, shutting down Instagram, regulating it, or redesigning it.
- It did not establish that Instagram is harmful to all users.
The phrase is memorable because it compresses a familiar concern about curated feeds and status comparison into three words. But a curated post is not automatically deceptive, and users differ in how they interpret or respond to it. A serious assessment of body image, sleep, exclusion fears, or teenage mental health would require the underlying studies or official investigations, not Musk’s characterization alone.
How people responded
Some replies jokingly or seriously suggested that Musk buy Facebook, Meta’s parent company, or shut down Instagram. Those were reactions from other users, not a proposal from Musk. Reports also noted crypto spam and fake Elon Musk accounts in the replies, an illustration of low-quality engagement on social platforms rather than evidence that Twitter’s problems were equivalent to Instagram’s comparison effects.

- Wide Compatibility - This MagGrip phone mount is compatible with MagSafe phones like iPhone 16/15/14/13/12 series and MagSafe cases. For non-MagSafe phones, just use the included plastic magnetic ring for easy attachment.
The remark appeared during Musk’s highly publicized dispute with Twitter over his proposed acquisition of the company. That timing explains why it attracted attention, but the Instagram post was not presented as part of the acquisition litigation or a business plan. The contemporaneous coverage reviewed here did not report a substantive public response from Meta or Mark Zuckerberg. Enter.co’s report reflects that limited response record.

Musk’s September 11, 2022 post was a concise personal judgment prompted by Charlie Munger’s discussion of envy. His earlier “thirst trap” comment focused on attention and likes; “envy amplifier” shifted the emphasis to comparison and dissatisfaction. Neither statement was a formal critique, research finding, or plan for Instagram—only Musk’s brief, recurring characterization of how he believed the platform affected users.
