Twitch’s mobile redesign, announced on July 29, 2024, made a personalized feed of live-stream previews the app’s new Home experience. Viewers could swipe through recommendations, enter a stream and its chat, or switch to a separate Clips feed. The interaction borrowed from swipe-to-discover apps, but it was not simply TikTok’s short-video format: Twitch said vertical video viewing was still in development at launch.
What changed in Twitch’s mobile app
Twitch said the redesigned app would roll out to all users over the week following its July 29, 2024 announcement. The update reorganized the mobile experience around discovery and added or updated several paths into streams and other content. Twitch’s launch announcement described these features:
- Discovery Feed: Home opened with personalized previews of live streams. Viewers could swipe between recommendations and tap one to enter the channel and chat.
- Clips feed: A distinct feed offered shorter highlights rather than making the live-stream feed a stream of prerecorded videos.
- Follow drawer: A drawer in the upper-left corner showed followed channels that were live.
- Stories: Viewers could see Stories from streamers they followed.
- Updated navigation: Browse, Activity, and Profile were refreshed, and a creator “+” control provided access to the dashboard, Story posting, and going live.
How the swipeable discovery experience worked
The intended path was to open Home, swipe through recommended live-stream previews, and tap a stream to join its channel and chat. Viewers looking for highlights could switch to Clips; the follow drawer provided a separate route to followed channels currently live. Browse remained the more deliberate route for finding categories and content.
Twitch also said early testing prompted playback controls: a setting for autoplay, a muted-by-default feed with a setting to change that behavior, a mute button in the feed, and picture-in-picture support over the feed. Those options addressed practical concerns such as unwanted sound and playback, though autoplay and video can still use mobile data and battery.

How it was—and was not—like TikTok
The comparison makes sense at the level of interaction: both experiences invite mobile users to swipe through personalized recommendations and sample content with little effort. But the Twitch feed was designed to lead into live channels and their communities, while Clips occupied a separate feed. Twitch said it was still working on vertical video viewing when the redesign launched.

So “TikTok-like” describes the swipe-and-preview pattern, not a complete match in content or purpose. Twitch’s stated aim was to connect viewers with live streamers and communities, not just to replicate a short-video feed.

Why Twitch made discovery the landing experience
Twitch framed the redesign as a response to how people used the service on phones and to the difficulty newcomers can face when they do not already know which channel to visit. In its March 2024 letter outlining plans for the year, CEO Dan Clancy called it the company’s first major mobile-app update since 2019 and said the Discovery Feed would become the landing experience.
Twitch’s July announcement said more than half of its users primarily used a phone in a typical month, 40% used a phone exclusively, and nearly three-quarters of new viewers began watching on mobile. These are figures reported by Twitch, not independently audited market statistics. A preview-first Home screen could lower the commitment required to try an unfamiliar live broadcast and potentially put smaller or less familiar creators in front of new viewers.

What the redesign meant for streamers
A recommendation feed creates a possible discovery route beyond a streamer’s existing followers, but it does not guarantee follows, watch time, subscriptions, or revenue. A viewer might sample a preview without joining the channel. That makes the opening moments, clear audio, and an immediately understandable scene useful considerations: they can help a newcomer decide whether to tap through.
Clips also became more important to mobile discovery and promotion. On August 28, 2024, Twitch announced that newly created Clips could automatically receive a portrait version. Streamers and viewers could choose a preferred portrait layout, adjust it during Clip creation, and edit existing Clips in Clips Manager. Twitch said Clips could appear in the mobile discovery feed and Stories as well as on Twitch’s other viewing surfaces and external social platforms. Portrait-friendly highlights may be easier to share on mobile, but recommendation-driven discovery also makes exposure more dependent on Twitch’s systems. Streamers may feel pressure to optimize for short previews, and a clip or preview that earns attention does not necessarily translate into a durable community. Treat the feed as one discovery path, not a promise of growth.

At TwitchCon San Diego in September 2024, Twitch said the feed had generated 38 million new follows and increased follows by 8%. Those are company-reported figures; the announcement did not specify the measurement period or methodology, so they should not be read as independently established results or a forecast for individual channels. Twitch also said more than 70% of new viewers were first coming to Twitch through the mobile app.

The same TwitchCon announcement described further feed and Clips work, including category or collection filters, easier access to followed categories, resuming VODs from recently watched streams, a Clip Carousel of recent stream moments, mobile portrait-Clip creation with more export options, and future support for simultaneous vertical and landscape streaming. Twitch presented these as planned improvements; the announcement alone does not establish that each feature shipped everywhere.
What to know if you are using Twitch now
The redesign discussed here is a 2024 product update, not a newly announced 2026 launch. Its original announcement does not establish which labels, controls, or feed behavior remain unchanged in current iOS and Android versions. If your app looks different or a feature is missing, update the app and check the current interface; availability can vary with platform, region, account experiments, and later revisions.
