A documentary has revived Elizabeth Holmes’s dispute with a quotation published in a 2023 New York Times profile, but the new reporting does not prove either version. Reporter Amy Chozick says Holmes told her, “They’re not playing me. They’re playing a character I created,” and that she wrote those words in a notebook during their walk. Holmes says she said, “They’re playing a character they created.” Chozick no longer has the notebook, did not record that part of the conversation, and says The Times editors reviewed her notes and confirmed the quotation in 2023. The documentary presents the competing accounts, not an independently verifiable resolution.
What is the Elizabeth Holmes quote dispute about?
The disagreement turns on a single pronoun and who Holmes supposedly said created the character being portrayed onscreen. The 2023 profile attributed this wording to Holmes: “They’re not playing me. They’re playing a character I created.” Holmes now says the wording was: “They’re playing a character they created.”
In the first version, Holmes describes the actors as portraying a character she created. In her version, the actors created the character themselves. That distinction affects how the comment is understood, but the available reporting does not establish which sentence was spoken.

Chozick, the profile’s reporter, says the exchange occurred while she and Holmes walked near the rented California beach home where Holmes was staying. Chozick recalls telling Holmes that Jennifer Lawrence had recently withdrawn from a film portrayal. She says Holmes replied with the wording printed in the profile.

According to Chozick, Holmes walked a few steps ahead while Chozick wrote down the exact words in her reporter’s notebook. She says she reviewed her notes each evening, marked important moments and highlighted the disputed quotation.
Chozick also describes a reporting practice in which she sometimes turns off her recorder and takes handwritten notes because people can offer their most candid on-the-record reflections that way. She says this conversation was not recorded.
Why is the missing notebook important?
The notebook would have been the contemporaneous written record Chozick cites, but she says she no longer has it. She generally kept reporters’ notebooks for a couple of years before disposing of them and now wishes she had retained this one.

That leaves readers with Chozick’s recollection of making the note rather than an inspectable document. Her account is evidence of her reporting process, but it cannot independently settle the exact wording without the notebook or another recording.

The documentary brings Holmes’s objection back into public discussion by showing Holmes and her partner, Billy Evans, saying the quotation was wrong. Evans said he recorded Holmes’s conversations, but the reporting reviewed for this update says no recording of this particular walk has been produced. Chozick disputes the suggestion that all of her conversations with the couple were recorded.
The film therefore supplies a renewed presentation of the disagreement rather than a conclusive audio record. Its account makes the dispute more visible; it does not independently verify Holmes’s wording or Chozick’s.

What is The New York Times’ position?
Chozick says she reviewed her interview notes with editors in 2023 and that they confirmed the quotation’s accuracy. She says the newspaper relayed that conclusion to Holmes and considered the matter settled at the time.

The newspaper’s reported position is an editorial confirmation based on the notes and the reporting process, not a publicly available recording of the exchange. The notebook is no longer available, so the basis for that confirmation cannot now be checked by readers.

Is Elizabeth Holmes’s disputed quote proven?

Those facts support clear attribution to each side, not a definitive finding about the words Holmes used.

The careful conclusion is that Chozick stands by the quotation, Holmes says it was misquoted, and the newspaper says its editors confirmed the published wording. None of the sources reviewed independently proves one version over the other.

Why did Jennifer Lawrence’s name come up in the conversation?
Chozick says she raised Lawrence’s withdrawal from a planned film portrayal of Holmes while walking with Holmes. That remark, in Chozick’s account, led into the exchange about actors and the character they were playing.

How do reporters normally verify a conversation that was not recorded?
They may compare contemporaneous notes with drafts, emails, calendars or other witnesses, and editors may review the notes and reporting. In this case, Chozick says editors reviewed her notes in 2023, but the notebook is no longer available for outside inspection.
Did Billy Evans provide an audio file of the disputed exchange?
The cited reports say no recording of this particular conversation has been produced. Evans’s claim that he recorded conversations does not by itself demonstrate that this walk was captured.
