When asked whether she might sue, Trump said other people generated the images and that he did not create them. His answer denied authorship of the files—not the fact that he posted them.
What Donald Trump posted on Truth Social
The collage Trump shared on August 18, 2024, included an image of Taylor Swift dressed as Uncle Sam above the message “Taylor wants you to vote for Donald Trump.” It also showed purported Swift fans wearing “Swifties for Trump” shirts. Reuters reported that watchdogs identified several images in the circulation as likely AI deepfakes.
The arrangement made the material look like evidence of an organized Swift-supporting movement. No contemporaneous reporting established that Swift or an official fan organization had endorsed Trump.
What Trump meant by “I didn’t generate them”
Fox Business correspondent Grady Trimble asked Trump whether he was concerned that Swift might sue. NPR reproduced Trump’s response: “I don’t know anything about them, other than somebody else generated them. I didn’t generate them.”

The wording draws a narrow line between creating an image and reposting it. NPR reported that Trump had repeatedly shared AI-generated content, so the statement challenged the claim that he personally made the files. It did not dispute that he uploaded the collage to Truth Social or that his post circulated the images.
Did Taylor Swift endorse Trump in 2024?
No evidence in the contemporaneous reporting showed a 2024 Taylor Swift endorsement of Donald Trump. TIME reported that Swift had not officially endorsed a candidate at that point. TIME also noted her 2020 endorsement of Joe Biden and her earlier criticism of Trump.

The online groups cited in the coverage were unofficial accounts, not proof of Swift’s position. TIME reported the following audience sizes in 2024:

Who made the “Swifties for Trump” pictures?
The available reporting does not identify one confirmed creator for every image. The Guardian linked some of the material being circulated to the account @amuse and described a wider misinformation-oriented nonprofit and media operation. That is evidence about circulation and amplification, not conclusive proof that the account created every image in Trump’s collage.
The Associated Press reported that a Trump campaign spokesman had said in May 2024 that the campaign did not “engage or utilize” tools supplied by an AI company. That statement neither identifies who produced the Swift images nor proves that no campaign-affiliated person participated in making or distributing them.

The Washington Post placed the episode in a broader pattern of AI-generated political memes, including a fake Swift-supporter image and a manipulated Kamala Harris image. Its analysis emphasized that these posts can work rhetorically even when they are not convincing documentary photographs: the image can suggest a political reality simply by appearing in a campaign conversation.

Trump’s comments show that a possible lawsuit was raised publicly, but the reporting available for this episode does not document a filed case, settlement or court judgment involving these posts. It is therefore not accurate to say that Swift sued Trump or that she won a legal claim over the images.

Whether a person could bring a successful claim would depend on facts the reports do not resolve, including who made each file, who distributed it, how it was presented, the jurisdiction and the specific harm alleged. Trump’s lack of personal authorship would not by itself answer every question about reposting or political use, but the sources do not establish a legal outcome on those issues.
Why the episode matters
The incident illustrates how an AI-made image can move through an election without a verified endorsement behind it. The key facts are separate:
- Creation: Watchdogs and journalists identified several images as likely AI-generated, but the complete production chain remains uncertain.
- Distribution: Trump posted the collage on Truth Social, regardless of who generated the individual files.
- Meaning: The caption and presentation falsely implied that Swift and her supporters wanted people to vote for Trump.
- Reality check: Contemporary reporting did not show a 2024 Swift endorsement of Trump.
- Accountability: No lawsuit or other definitive legal result concerning these specific posts is documented in the cited coverage.
Trump’s statement is best understood as an authorship denial, not a denial of participation in spreading the images. That distinction is central when evaluating synthetic political media: ask who created the file, who posted it, whether it was labeled as satire, what real-world endorsement exists, and what consequences are documented.
