The quote is not the disputed part of the viral clip. The uncertainty concerns what the demonstrators shouted immediately beforehand—and whether Harris was responding to “Jesus is Lord,” “Christ is King,” “Lies,” “That’s a lie,” or the broader disruption.
What happened at the La Crosse rally?
Harris was campaigning in Wisconsin on October 17, 2024, with an event at the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse’s Recreational Eagle Center. Local reports said more than 3,000 people formed lines across campus for the rally. The presidential pool report places the interruption about 21 minutes into Harris’s remarks.
She had been speaking about reproductive freedom and arguing that Trump had “hand selected three members” of the Supreme Court with the intention that they would overturn the constitutional protections associated with Roe v. Wade. Audience members then interrupted.

From the press position, pool reporters said they could not clearly make out the words. Harris answered:
“Oh, you guys are at the wrong rally.”
“No, I think you meant to go to the smaller one down the street.”
Video of the exchange circulated online, including through news coverage and a clip shared by the Harris campaign’s rapid-response account.
What did the protesters shout?
That question has produced competing versions of the viral moment. The official event transcript, as described in later fact-check coverage, records an interruption as: “Lies. Lies. That’s a lie.” It does not include the phrases “Jesus is Lord” or “Christ is King.”

At the same time, a separate audience-recorded video appears to capture a protester saying “Jesus is Lord.” Two University of Wisconsin–La Crosse students, Grant Beth and Luke Polaske, later told Fox News that they attended to protest Harris’s abortion position and shouted Christian and pro-life messages. Those statements identify the students as participants, but they remain participant accounts rather than an independently verified transcript of every word in the room.
Different camera angles and audio quality also affect what can be heard. Later fact-check reporting noted that the available recordings do not conclusively establish whether Harris’s response was directed specifically at “Jesus is Lord,” “Christ is King,” “That’s a lie,” or the interruption as a whole. The safest description is that Harris was interrupted by anti-abortion or pro-Trump protesters and responded to the disruption; it is not established that she was mocking Christians as a group.
For that reason, the claim that Harris definitively “mocked Christians for saying Jesus is Lord” goes further than the evidence supports.
Why did Harris mention a “smaller” rally?
The second line was a political joke aimed at Trump’s recurring emphasis on rally size. Harris and her campaign had been arguing that Trump’s events were smaller than he claimed or that people left before the events ended. The Associated Press described the exchange as part of Harris’s argument that Trump’s rallies were shrinking and that attendees often left early.

In that context, “the smaller one down the street” had two meanings:
- Immediate dismissal: Harris portrayed the hecklers as people who had arrived at the wrong political event.
- Campaign contrast: She turned the interruption into a jab at Trump’s crowd-size claims, suggesting that his event was the smaller gathering.
Contemporaneous coverage interpreted the line as a reference to a nearby Trump event or, more broadly, to the rivalry between the campaigns over crowd size. It is more accurate to call it an improvised-sounding campaign quip or political jab than to claim that it was a prewritten joke.
Was the interruption staged?
No reliable source in the available reporting establishes that the protesters were planted or that Harris’s response had been scripted. The fact that the exchange became a useful campaign clip does not, by itself, prove that it was arranged.
The Harris campaign’s rapid-response account labeled the interrupters “MAGA hecklers.” That is the campaign’s characterization and should be attributed as such. The available reporting supports describing the participants as protesters opposed to Harris’s abortion-rights position, with some participants identifying themselves as Christian or pro-life demonstrators. It does not justify treating every detail of the campaign’s label or the protesters’ motives as independently settled.

How to interpret the viral video
The clip supports a narrow, clear conclusion: Harris made the “wrong rally” and “smaller one down the street” remarks during an interruption at her La Crosse rally. It does not, on its own, resolve the audio dispute or prove Harris’s intent toward Christianity.
When viewing or sharing the footage, it helps to separate three questions:
| Question | What the evidence shows |
|---|---|
| Did Harris make the quote? | Yes. The event transcript and contemporaneous reporting support the wording. |
| Was she responding to an interruption? | Yes. The remarks came during an audience disruption while she discussed abortion rights. |
| What exact words triggered her response? | Uncertain. Recordings, the transcript and participant accounts do not align conclusively. |
The exchange also does not establish Harris’s personal religious views. Nor does it show that her remark was directed at Christians generally. The documented setting was a partisan campaign rally, and the immediate subject was a political interruption.

Kamala Harris really did joke that hecklers were at the “wrong rally” and should have gone to the “smaller one down the street.” The line was delivered at her October 17, 2024, rally in La Crosse, Wisconsin, during a debate over abortion rights and Trump’s Supreme Court appointments. Its “smaller” reference was a jab at Trump’s rally-size claims.

What remains unresolved is the precise shout that came immediately before the response. Some video and participant accounts point to Christian slogans such as “Jesus is Lord,” while the official transcript records “Lies. Lies. That’s a lie.” The responsible conclusion is therefore that the quote is verified, but the viral interpretation of exactly whom—or what—Harris was answering is not.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did Kamala Harris say hecklers were at the wrong rally?
Yes. At a University of Wisconsin–La Crosse rally on October 17, 2024, Harris said, “Oh, you guys are at the wrong rally,” and then, “I think you meant to go to the smaller one down the street.”
Did the protesters say “Jesus is Lord”?
A separate audience video appears to capture those words, and two students later said they shouted Christian and pro-life messages. However, the official event transcript records “Lies. Lies. That’s a lie,” and the available evidence does not conclusively establish which words immediately prompted Harris’s response.
Was Harris mocking Christians?
The evidence does not support that broad conclusion. The documented context was an interruption by protesters at a partisan rally. The exact words Harris was answering are disputed, and the exchange does not establish her views toward Christians as a group.
Why did Harris refer to a smaller rally?
The remark was a political jab at Donald Trump’s repeated emphasis on rally crowd sizes. Harris’s campaign argued that Trump’s events were shrinking or that attendees left early, making “smaller one” a reference to that broader campaign contrast.
The Bottom Line
The quote is real; the viral audio interpretation is not settled. Harris made the “wrong rally” and “smaller one” remarks during an October 17, 2024, La Crosse rally interruption. What the protesters said immediately beforehand—and therefore exactly what Harris was answering—remains disputed.
