In 2024, The Village Voice, LA Weekly and Riverfront Times carried large batches of OnlyFans-focused listicles beside their journalism. The posts appeared machine-written to some observers, but the reporting did not establish that they were generated by AI, who commissioned them, or that layoffs caused their publication. What it did document was a sharp separation between the sites’ traditional newsrooms and a poorly explained commercial content operation.
What the reporting found
Futurism reported that The Village Voice and LA Weekly had added OnlyFans categories containing hundreds of listicles about porn performers. The pages appeared alongside editorial work and, according to that report, did not disclose that they were AI-generated or advertising. WIRED’s Spanish-language report the following day described similar material on Riverfront Times.
WIRED said the writing showed signs associated with AI-generated text, while cautioning that some pieces could have been written by human freelancers. Neither report confirmed the production method. “AI slop” is therefore a description of the material’s apparent style and publishing context, not a proven account of how every article was made.
What is The Village Voice publishing now?
The 2024 reports described OnlyFans performer roundups and rankings occupying dedicated sections on the sites. They were presented with bylines including Daniela LaFave; Riverfront Times also used “RFT staff.” WIRED reported that LaFave confirmed she was the person named in the bylines but declined to say whether she used AI. That does not show that she wrote every article or used an automated system.

There was also no clear public explanation on the pages, as described by Futurism, that the posts were sponsored, advertising, or machine-generated. That lack of labeling made the material difficult for readers to distinguish from ordinary editorial publishing.
Who said they were responsible?
The newsroom staffers contacted in the reporting denied involvement, but their comments did not identify the people or company managing the project.
- R.C. Baker, The Village Voice: “I handle only news and cultural reporting out of New York City. I have nothing to do with OnlyFans. That content is handled by a separate team that is based, I believe, in LA.” Futurism described Baker as the paper’s only remaining editorial staffer.
- Darrick Rainey, then editor-in-chief of LA Weekly: “We weren’t happy about it at all, and we were absolutely not involved in putting it up.”
Those statements establish what the named journalists said about their own roles. They do not establish who commissioned, edited, uploaded or monetized the articles.

How the three publications compare
| Publication | Material described in 2024 reporting | Bylines or labeling | Newsroom involvement stated in reports | Staffing timeline reported by WIRED |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Village Voice | OnlyFans listicles, described by Futurism as numbering in the hundreds | Included Daniela LaFave; Futurism reported no AI or advertising disclosure on the pages it examined | R.C. Baker said the work was handled by a separate team, apparently based in Los Angeles | Not stated in the cited reporting |
| LA Weekly | OnlyFans listicles, described by Futurism as numbering in the hundreds | Included Daniela LaFave; Futurism reported no AI or advertising disclosure on the pages it examined | Darrick Rainey said his editorial team was not involved | WIRED reported that most staff were dismissed or offered buyouts in March 2024 |
| Riverfront Times | Similar OnlyFans-focused material, with writing WIRED said appeared AI-like | Bylines included Daniela LaFave and “RFT staff” | Specific newsroom responsibility was not established | WIRED reported that the entire staff was dismissed in May 2024 after the sale |
The table reflects the published accounts, not proof that all three sites shared an owner, contractor or production pipeline.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDid layoffs cause the posts?
The chronology is striking but not conclusive. WIRED reported major staff cuts at LA Weekly in March 2024 and the dismissal of Riverfront Times’ entire staff in May, after its sale. The OnlyFans pages were reported during the same year. Neither publication’s reporting demonstrated that the layoffs caused the listicles, that editorial staff were directly replaced by AI, or that a particular executive ordered the strategy.

At The Village Voice, Baker’s account instead described a separate team. At LA Weekly, Rainey said the newsroom was not involved. Those details point to organizational separation, but they leave the commissioning and oversight structure unresolved.
What might the business model have been?
WIRED said it was unclear whether one initiative or several produced the posts. It raised two possibilities: the publications may have been pursuing search traffic and advertising revenue, or they may have accepted money from promoted accounts or representatives. The reporting did not verify either explanation.

An OnlyFans spokesperson identified as Brixie told WIRED, in an English rendering of the Spanish-language report: “OnlyFans has no financial agreements with these outlets.” That statement addresses agreements with OnlyFans itself; it does not establish whether individual creators, agencies or other parties paid for placement. The Street Media owner did not respond to WIRED’s request for comment, and former Riverfront Times owner Chris Keating said a confidentiality agreement prevented him from naming the buyer.

What remains unknown
- Whether the articles were written by AI, humans, or a mixture of both.
- Who selected the topics, supplied the source material, edited the pages and uploaded them.
- Whether the same company, contractor or owner operated the sections across publications.
- Whether any creator, representative or intermediary paid for links or placement.
- Whether the staffing changes altered the sites’ current operations; the reports describe events in 2024 and do not establish present-day staffing, ownership or site content.
Why the episode matters for readers
The episode shows how a recognizable local-news brand can carry content that looks editorial while serving a different, undisclosed objective. A familiar masthead is not proof that every section is produced by the publication’s reporting staff, and an AI-like style is not proof of AI authorship. Readers evaluating similar pages should check the byline, labeling, correction policy, author biography and whether the site clearly identifies sponsorship or affiliate relationships.

The strongest documented conclusion is narrower than the headline’s implication: three alt-weekly websites published large quantities of OnlyFans listicles alongside journalism during a period of severe newsroom disruption at two of them. The available reporting did not identify a causal decision-maker or prove that layoffs led to automated publishing.
