The world is devastated, but not every person or all life is wiped out. Fallout describes the Great War as a nuclear catastrophe that destroys the old world and scorches Earth. Its official timeline also records survivors emerging from Vaults and forming communities afterward. It does not establish that every location was directly hit.
What happens in the Great War?
Bethesda dates the Great War to October 23, 2077, describing it as the event that “destroyed the world of old.” Its official Fallout timeline says the war “scorched the earth in nuclear flame.” These descriptions establish a global-scale disaster, not a tally of strikes in every country or region.

The answer depends on what “the entire world gets nuked” means. If it means that civilization faces worldwide nuclear devastation, yes. If it means every location is hit or all life is erased, that is not supported by the official account.
How do we know people survive?
Bethesda’s timeline says people sheltered in Appalachia’s Vaults and emerged 25 years after the war. It also places later stories in the wastes of Southern California, the Mojave, and the Commonwealth, where settlements, villages, and societies exist. That record of survivors and postwar communities rules out the idea that humanity or life was completely wiped out.

The timeline identifies Fallout 4 as a story set in the postwar Commonwealth, one way to explore a region rebuilding amid the ruins.
Why does Fallout sometimes sound more absolute?
The opening narration of Fallout 2 says, “The earth was nearly wiped clean of life,” and describes continents engulfed by flames. That passage appears in a Steam-hosted Fallout timeline reproducing the game’s narration. It is dramatic storytelling, not a precise census or proof that every part of Earth was struck.

What the sources do—and do not—establish
