In Chapter 1, “An Unexpected Party,” he distinguishes them through their entrances, clothing and a few individual traits: Dwalin has a blue beard, Balin a white beard, and the youngest pair, Fíli and Kíli, have yellow beards.
Where Tolkien describes the dwarves
The main scene to consult is Chapter 1, “An Unexpected Party,” when the dwarves arrive at Bilbo’s home. Tolkien introduces the company over the course of their entrances rather than stopping to provide a full physical checklist for every dwarf. The Digital Tolkien Project’s Chapter 1 index identifies the chapter and provides a chapter-and-paragraph locator.
What the book says about individual appearances
- Dwalin: has a blue beard.
- Balin: has a white beard.
- Fíli and Kíli: the youngest dwarves in the company, they have yellow beards.
The dwarves’ colored hoods and cloaks also help distinguish them in the arrival scene. These details belong to particular characters; they are not a rule that every dwarf shares a particular beard color or outfit.
What the book leaves open
Tolkien’s selective descriptions do not settle every detail of each dwarf’s appearance. An illustrator or filmmaker can fill in what the text leaves unspecified, but those added visual choices should be understood as an interpretation or adaptation—not as details the novel explicitly gives. For a specific character or feature, the distinction is simple: attribute to Tolkien only what the book states.

How to check the scene in context
Read the opening chapter of The Hobbit, “An Unexpected Party,” and follow the dwarves’ entrances rather than treating their appearances as one group portrait. A print edition lets you inspect the scene in context; the Libraries SA catalog record is one catalog entry for the book.
