Yes, Disney+ added cable-like continuous viewing—but not a free standalone Marvel or Star Wars FAST service. Disney launched continuous playlists in the United States in September 2024. One, called Epic Stories, brings together action-oriented Disney, Marvel and Star Wars programming. In the current U.S. Disney+ interface, the feature is described as Streams. Watching it requires Disney+ or an eligible bundle, and availability can vary by plan, country, device and date.
What Disney announced in 2024
On August 6, 2024, Disney announced continuous playlists for U.S. Disney+ subscriptions. The company described the idea as a “lean-back” way to open the app and start watching without selecting every title. The first offerings, announced for September 4, were ABC News Live and a preschool-focused playlist, according to Disney’s corporate announcement.

Disney’s later rollout plan named four additional curated playlists:
- Seasonal Content
- Epic Stories
- Throwbacks
- Real Life
The original announcement said those four options, including Epic Stories, would initially roll out to Premium subscribers. That was a 2024 launch condition, not a guarantee of the same eligibility in 2026. Disney’s announcement is available at Disney Plus to Introduce Continuous Playlists in U.S. Subscription Offerings.
#1 Best Overall
- A Hulu subscription offers unlimited streaming of today’s hottest shows with next-day air.
- Watch This is Us, Empire, The Voice, plus get exclusive past seasons of Seinfeld, South Park, The Golden Girls, and more. Stream originals like the Emmy Award-winning The Handmaid’s Tale, get new movies all the time, and plenty of stuff for the kids—including every season of Curious George
- Activate on your favorite supported devices to watch wherever you are. Limited Commercials and No Commercials plans available,
- Live TV plan required. Regional restrictions, blackouts and additional terms apply.
- No returns and no refunds on gift cards
How Marvel and Star Wars fit in
Epic Stories is a curated playlist, not proof of separate 24/7 Marvel and Star Wars channels. Disney described it as a compilation of action-focused stories from major brands including Disney, Marvel and Star Wars. The catalog could be refreshed periodically, so it should not be treated like a fixed television schedule.
An April 2024 report used “FAST” and “cable-style streaming channels” to describe Disney’s plans and mentioned Marvel, Star Wars and Pixar. That coverage was an early description of a planned experience, not confirmation that Disney would operate individually branded franchise channels. See the contemporaneous report at Tech Times.

Disney has not established a permanent public schedule promising particular films or episodes at particular times. A title associated with a franchise playlist can also depend on territory, rights, parental controls and current programming decisions.
What “Streams” means in the current Disney+ app
As of August 18, 2026, Disney’s U.S. website uses the name Streams. It describes Streams as a continuous viewing experience that can either curate Disney+ catalog content or provide a live linear feed such as ABC News. The current description is on Disney+.

“Streams” appears to be the current presentation or evolution of the 2024 playlist feature, rather than a wholly separate 2026 launch. The exact label and placement can differ between a smart-TV app, browser, mobile app and connected-TV device.
| Disney+ Streams or playlists | Traditional cable channel |
|---|---|
| Runs inside a streaming subscription app | Delivered through a pay-TV channel lineup |
| Uses Disney+ catalog material and selected live feeds | Usually follows a more predictable linear schedule |
| May be editorially curated and refreshed frequently | Typically has an established channel identity and guide |
| Does not necessarily represent a dedicated Marvel or Star Wars channel | Channels are generally individually branded |
| Eligibility can depend on plan, market, device and rights | Availability mainly follows the cable package and geography |
Is this actually free?
Not in the normal FAST meaning. FAST generally means free ad-supported streaming television that viewers can access without paying for a subscription. Disney placed these continuous experiences inside its paid Disney+ subscription offering.

Three ideas are easy to confuse:
- A free live feed within a subscription: ABC News Live may be available to Disney+ subscribers without a separate live-TV subscription.
- An ad-supported Disney+ plan: A paid Disney+ tier that includes advertising.
- A FAST service: A free, ad-supported service accessible without a paid Disney+ account.
Disney’s fiscal 2025 annual report describes Disney+ as a subscription video-on-demand service with ad-supported and ad-free offerings in applicable markets. It does not turn the service into a free FAST platform: Disney 2025 Annual Report.

Disney’s original announcement concerned the United States. It said ABC News Live and the preschool playlist would be available to all U.S. subscribers, while the four additional curated playlists initially targeted Premium subscribers. Disney’s current site says Streams are available to Disney+ and bundle subscribers, but that broad statement does not promise identical access to every stream on every account.

- Country: Do not assume that the U.S. lineup, ABC News Live or Epic Stories exists in another market.
- Plan and bundle: Hulu or another bundle can provide Disney+ access, but bundle membership does not guarantee identical streams across accounts.
- Device: The feature’s name, location or presentation may vary among browsers, phones, televisions and streaming boxes.
- Profile: Children’s profiles and parental controls can narrow what appears.
- Rights and timing: Seasonal, event-based or licensed programming can disappear or differ by territory.
The practical check is to open Disney+ on the device and account you use, then look for the Streams area and its plan-specific selections. Current availability can change after the 2024 rollout.
What the experience is good for—and where it falls short
Advantages
- It removes the need to choose a new title every few minutes.
- It can surface older catalog programs that are easy to overlook.
- Epic Stories gives Marvel and Star Wars viewers a franchise-oriented starting point.
- Families can use category-based programming for background viewing.
- Live feeds such as ABC News provide a different experience from on-demand playback.
Limitations
- There is no verified promise of a dedicated, permanent Marvel or Star Wars channel.
- Disney may not publish a dependable guide comparable to a traditional television schedule.
- Programs can repeat, rotate or change without notice.
- An ad-supported Disney+ subscription is still a paid subscription.
- Live linear feeds and curated on-demand playlists are different products even when grouped under Streams.
How Disney+ compares with true FAST services
If your priority is free cable-like viewing without a Disney+ subscription, services such as Pluto TV and Tubi are the closer match. They offer free, ad-supported channels, although they do not reproduce Disney+’s full Disney, Pixar, Marvel or Star Wars catalog and their lineups vary by territory.
If you mean a conventional cable replacement with live news, sports and a channel grid, paid services such as Hulu + Live TV or YouTube TV fit that need better. They do not replace Disney+’s franchise library.
Is Disney+ worth it for this feature?
- Marvel or Star Wars fans: Disney+ is the relevant subscription for access to the underlying franchise catalog and the Epic Stories-style entry point, but not for a guaranteed 24/7 branded channel.
- Families: Continuous children’s or seasonal programming can make the app easier to use, subject to profile and plan limits.
- Background-TV viewers: Streams provide a lean-back option, though repeats and changing selections are part of the trade-off.
- People seeking genuinely free FAST: Pluto TV, Tubi or a similar service better matches that requirement.
- Traditional cable replacers: A live-TV service is more appropriate if a published multi-channel guide is essential.
The timeline in one view
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| April 15, 2024 | Tech Times described Disney’s planned cable-style, franchise-centered experience. |
| August 6, 2024 | Disney formally announced continuous playlists for U.S. Disney+ subscriptions. |
| September 4, 2024 | ABC News Live and the preschool playlist were scheduled to become available. |
| Later fall 2024 | Disney planned Seasonal Content, Epic Stories, Throwbacks and Real Life playlists. |
| August 18, 2026 | Disney’s U.S. website described the current feature as Streams. |
The Bottom Line
Disney+ borrowed the lean-back behavior of cable inside a paid streaming app. Marvel and Star Wars appear through curated franchise programming such as Epic Stories, while live feeds such as ABC News Live occupy a different category. The evidence does not show free, standalone or permanently scheduled Marvel and Star Wars FAST channels.
