Yes. YouTube officially ended its annual Rewind video series on October 7, 2021. But the company did not announce a named, fully specified replacement that day: it said only that it was exploring a “different and updated kind of experience.” The clearest later successor is YouTube Recap, introduced in December 2025—but it is a personalized viewing summary, not another platform-wide Rewind film.
What YouTube Rewind was—and when it ended
YouTube Rewind was the platform’s annual year-in-review video, bringing together selected creators, trends, music, memes, and cultural moments in a produced recap. The official series ran from 2010 through 2019; its last installment was YouTube Rewind 2019: For the Record. YouTube did not release a Rewind in 2020, but that absence was not yet the definitive cancellation announcement. 9to5Google’s October 2021 report covered both the missing 2020 edition and YouTube’s subsequent decision to end the series.
Rewind’s challenge was the scale of what it tried to represent. A single video had to select from a huge, varied platform. Later installments drew criticism for feeling highly produced and brand-safe while leaving out creators and subcultures viewers considered central to YouTube. Rewind 2018: Everyone Controls Rewind became a focal point for that backlash. The 2019 edition shifted toward lists and rankings, but critics still found it less like a shared celebration than a corporate year-end package. This reception is important context, not a confirmed single explanation from YouTube for ending the series. The company’s announcement did not identify one exclusive cause. YouTube’s 2019 explanation of its different approach provides the company’s own account of that edition.
What YouTube announced on October 7, 2021
YouTube said there would be no Rewind for 2021 and that it was ending the annual series. It thanked the creators who had taken part and said creators would continue making their own year-end recaps. It also gestured toward a “different and updated kind of experience,” without giving it a name, release date, format, creator-selection plan, geographic scope, or feature list. Tech Times’ report on the October 7 announcement covered YouTube’s statement; 9to5Google likewise described the proposed different experience.

That distinction matters when reading headlines about a “better replacement.” The phrase conveyed an expectation or intention, not a product YouTube had fully announced. The company did not promise another big ensemble music video, nor did it explain what “better” would mean for viewers or creators.
What YouTube did instead in the years after Rewind
YouTube continued recognizing yearly trends, but not through a single official Rewind film. Its 2021 year-end coverage, for example, published separate lists of trending videos and creators, including Shorts creators. YouTube’s 2021 lists show that annual editorial coverage continued in a different format.

Creators also kept making their own recaps, as YouTube had encouraged. Those videos can speak directly to a creator’s community, but they are independent productions rather than a universal, company-produced summary. Events sometimes described as Rewind successors should not be treated as the officially promised replacement unless YouTube explicitly identifies them that way; the available sources do not establish Escape2021 as that definitive replacement.
YouTube Recap: the later, personalized successor
On December 2, 2025, YouTube announced its first YouTube Recap. Instead of depicting the platform’s year for everyone, it used a viewer’s watch history to present that person’s interests, creators, music, podcasts, and viewing moments. YouTube said it would appear first in North America and roll out elsewhere during that week, accessible from the homepage or the You tab on mobile and desktop. YouTube’s announcement describes the launch and experience.

YouTube Help says the 2025 Recap could draw on eligible long-form videos and Shorts watched while signed in across mobile, computer, and TV. A viewer who watched while signed out, had watch history paused or deleted, or did not have sufficient eligible history might not receive the same summary—or might not qualify. The Help page specified sufficient eligible watch history from January through late October 2025. It also listed YouTube mobile app version 18.43 or newer for that 2025 Recap; that historical requirement should not be read as the current app minimum in 2026. YouTube Help’s Recap documentation gives the eligibility and access details.
The feature was seasonal. YouTube Help says Recaps are automatically deleted for everyone after the end of the year, so the 2025 Recap is not necessarily still available to open in 2026. Availability also depended on rollout timing and country: YouTube specified a North American launch followed by a wider rollout that week.

How Recap compares with Rewind
| Question | YouTube Rewind | YouTube Recap |
|---|---|---|
| What does it summarize? | A selected view of platform-wide trends, creators, and culture. | An individual viewer’s eligible watch history. |
| What form does it take? | A produced, edited year-in-review video. | A personalized viewing summary. |
| Who is it for? | The broad YouTube audience, represented through editorial choices. | Each eligible viewer, based on their own viewing. |
| What is its strength? | A shared cultural snapshot that could introduce viewers to creators and trends beyond their usual interests. | Personal relevance: it reflects what an individual watched. |
| What is its limitation? | One selection could not represent every community, country, genre, or controversy on the platform. | Personalization can reinforce existing interests rather than offer a broad account of YouTube culture. |
| Can it serve as a lasting public artifact? | It was a public video series. | The 2025 Recap was temporary; YouTube Help says it is deleted after the year ends. |
So whether Recap is “better” depends on what a viewer wanted from Rewind. Recap is better suited to looking back at one person’s viewing. Rewind was better suited to a shared, edited account of the platform’s culture, however imperfect its selections. Recap does not reproduce that collective experience.

The sources available through August 18, 2026 do not verify a revival of the original Rewind format. That is not proof a return is impossible; it means YouTube has not established one in the available evidence. Its 2025 Recap announcement describes a personalized product, not a revival of the annual ensemble video.
