Spotify’s “Exclude from your Taste Profile” setting reduces how much selected tracks or playlists influence your recommendations and taste summaries. The music still plays, and the feature is not a promise that Spotify stops recording listening activity. It is useful for sleep audio, children’s music, workouts, guests, or one-off experiments that you do not want shaping your usual recommendations.
What Spotify’s Taste Profile is
Spotify describes your Taste Profile as its interpretation of what you like, based on what you listen to and how you listen. It informs recommendations such as Discover Weekly and the Home page, as well as personalized features including Wrapped and Blend. It is an algorithmic model, not a complete data record you can open and inspect. Spotify’s Taste Profile explanation

What exclusion does to a track or playlist
Spotify says excluding a track or playlist gives its past and future plays less influence on recommendations and taste summaries. “Less influence” is the important distinction: Spotify does not promise the listening is mathematically erased from every signal or that the song can never appear in a recommendation. The song remains playable, and you can reverse the setting from the same menu by choosing the corresponding “Include” option. Spotify’s instructions and explanation
The control applies to tracks and playlists, not an entire artist, album, genre, or listening session. Spotify added track exclusion in October 2025 and said the feature is available to Free and Premium users globally on web, desktop, iOS, and Android. Exclude an individual track
- Open the track in Spotify.
- Open its three-dot menu.
- Select “Exclude track from your Taste Profile,” or the equivalent label shown in your account.
- To undo the choice, return to that menu and select “Include track in your Taste Profile.”
Track exclusion is the more targeted choice if only a few songs in a playlist are contextual, or if the same song appears in several places.
Exclude a playlist
- Open the playlist.
- Open the three-dot menu near the top. Spotify documents horizontal dots on iPhone and desktop and vertical dots on Android.
- Select “Exclude from your Taste Profile.”
- To reverse it, open the menu again and choose “Include in your Taste Profile.”
Playlist exclusion is convenient when the whole listening context—such as sleep, study, exercise, children’s music, or a guest’s selection—should have less effect on your usual recommendations. Playlist exclusion has an important boundary
Excluding a playlist does not automatically exclude every separate play of every track on it. Spotify says a song on an excluded playlist may still count toward your Taste Profile if you listen to it elsewhere—for example, from Liked Songs. Plays from search, an album page, or another playlist should not be assumed to receive the excluded playlist’s treatment. If a particular song needs to be de-emphasized wherever you play it, exclude the track itself. Spotify’s explanation of playlist context
What happens to Wrapped and recommendations
Wrapped
Spotify’s support documentation says plays from excluded tracks or playlists are left out of Wrapped stories and data points such as top artists and top songs, except for total listening time. That is Spotify’s stated treatment in the cited help documentation, not a guarantee that listening events are deleted from account data. Recommendations
Spotify says the setting affects recommendations and taste summaries; its materials name Discover Weekly and Home among relevant recommendation experiences. Different surfaces may respond on different schedules, and Spotify does not guarantee that every recommendation surface will ignore an excluded listen. Spotify’s overview of recommendation controls
How long the change takes
Spotify says an exclusion can take up to 48 hours to take effect. Discover Weekly and some other recommendations may not reflect it until the following week’s refresh. An unchanged recommendation immediately after you toggle the setting is not, by itself, evidence that the control failed. Spotify’s timing guidance

- Sleep sounds, rain, or meditation: Exclude the playlist if you use the same dedicated playlist repeatedly. Exclude individual tracks if only some are background audio.
- Children or guests using your account: Exclude the playlist they use if the whole listening context is separate from your own taste.
- Workouts, study, or holiday music: Playlist exclusion is low-maintenance when most of the playlist is not representative. Use track exclusion for a mixed playlist where some songs should still inform recommendations.
- Trying an unfamiliar genre: Exclude the relevant tracks or playlist if you want to explore without giving those plays their usual personalization weight.
- One temporary listening session: Consider Private Session rather than permanently managing individual exclusions. It is a different control, not a synonym for exclusion.
What exclusion does not promise
This is a personalization control, not a data-deletion or full privacy setting. Its documented effect is to give selected listening less influence on taste summaries and recommendations; it does not promise that Spotify stops collecting or retaining the listening activity. If your goal is to erase listening history or prevent data processing, do not treat this toggle as accomplishing that.

If the setting seems not to work
A recommendation has not changed
Allow the stated processing window and, for Discover Weekly, the next weekly refresh. Check whether you excluded the track itself or only a playlist, and whether you played the song through another source. Spotify promises reduced influence, not a guaranteed block from every recommendation; other signals may also contribute.
The menu item is missing
Check that you opened a track or playlist menu: Spotify documents exclusion for those items, not for arbitrary albums, artists, podcasts, or genres. Look in the item’s three-dot menu, confirm the app is current, and check whether your account uses slightly different wording or placement. A mixed playlist contains songs you want Spotify to learn from
Exclude only the contextual tracks rather than the entire playlist. That keeps the control aligned with what you actually want to de-emphasize.
