For a 24/7 YouTube stream that encodes or transcodes video on a DigitalOcean Droplet, start your evaluation with a dedicated-CPU plan, then test the exact encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene you intend to run. DigitalOcean’s listed 4-vCPU, 8-GiB CPU-Optimized Droplet is a practical reference point—not a guarantee of smooth streaming. A relay that forwards already encoded video may need less CPU, while heavier encoding may need more.

Choose a Droplet based on what it does to the video

The key sizing question is whether the server encodes the video, transcodes it into another format, or simply forwards already encoded media. CPU demand depends on the encoder, codec, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, and number of simultaneous streams. OBS cautions that meeting minimum system requirements does not guarantee streaming capability, and its CPU requirements vary with those workload choices (OBS system requirements).

Workload Starting point What to validate
Forwarding or remuxing pre-encoded content without video transcoding A smaller Droplet may work; no universal minimum is established. Start conservatively and run a sustained test. Whether any re-encoding occurs, peak CPU and memory, sustained stability, and outbound transfer.
Continuous software encoding or transcoding Evaluate a dedicated-CPU plan. DigitalOcean’s 4-vCPU, 8-GiB CPU-Optimized plan is a reference configuration, not a tested fit for every stream. Encoder and codec, target resolution and FPS, CPU headroom, memory, transfer allowance, and price.
Higher resolution, higher frame rate, complex scenes, or multiple streams Measure the real workload before committing to a larger configuration. CPU utilization, dropped frames, codec support, egress, and whether a different encoding workflow is appropriate.

DigitalOcean says shared-CPU Droplets do not guarantee full CPU access at all times; neighboring workloads can affect the available share. Dedicated-CPU Droplets guarantee access to their allocated hyper-thread, making them the more defensible starting class for predictable continuous encoding. DigitalOcean recommends benchmarking and load-testing a workload before settling on a plan (Choosing the Right CPU Droplet Plan).

DigitalOcean CPU-Optimized options and costs

DigitalOcean’s pricing page, accessed October 3, 2026, lists these CPU-Optimized examples. Prices and included transfer are subject to change; check the current plan page before provisioning.

Configuration Listed monthly price Included transfer How to use it as a sizing reference
2 vCPUs, 4 GiB RAM $42/month 4,000 GiB Lower-cost test size; no particular streaming workload is guaranteed to run reliably on it.
4 vCPUs, 8 GiB RAM $84/month 5,000 GiB Useful evaluation baseline for continuous encoding; not a published performance test or universal recommendation.
8 vCPUs, 16 GiB RAM $168/month 6,000 GiB A larger option to assess if measurements show the workload needs more CPU or memory.

DigitalOcean describes CPU-Optimized Droplets as dedicated-CPU configurations suited to consistent-performance workloads, including media streaming (DigitalOcean Droplet pricing). The plan’s vCPU count alone cannot establish whether it will encode your chosen format without dropped frames. DigitalOcean’s Droplet Limits documentation lists throughput limits separately from monthly transfer allowances: non-Premium, non-GPU Droplets have a documented maximum of 2 Gbps, while Premium CPU Droplets have a 10 Gbps limit. Neither figure replaces checking the included transfer for your plan (DigitalOcean Droplet Limits).

Estimate outbound transfer before leaving a stream running

The stream’s encoded bitrate is a useful starting point for estimating outbound data. For a 30-day month, a constant 5 Mbps stream transfers approximately 1.62 decimal TB, or about 1,508 GiB; at 10 Mbps, it transfers approximately 3.24 decimal TB, or about 3,017 GiB. These are arithmetic estimates using bitrate multiplied by the seconds in 30 days and converted to bytes and GiB, not DigitalOcean usage measurements. Protocol overhead, restarts, and other outbound traffic can increase actual usage.

Compare your estimate with the plan’s included outbound transfer and check DigitalOcean’s current overage terms. Monitor actual bandwidth during a representative run: the chosen bitrate is not the only traffic your Droplet may send.

Set YouTube ingest and encoder settings deliberately

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest, and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. Use settings supported by both your encoder and the YouTube ingest configuration (YouTube Live encoder settings).

  • Bitrate: YouTube’s suggested H.264 bitrate is 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are separate recommendations, not a universal bitrate for every resolution or codec; consult YouTube’s table for your target.
  • Rate control: Use CBR as YouTube recommends, and test the actual upload rate from the Droplet to the selected ingest.
  • Keyframes: Set a two-second interval, keeping it at or below YouTube’s four-second maximum.
  • Protocol: Prefer RTMPS where your encoder supports it; YouTube says it encrypts stream data in transit to and through Google’s servers.
  • Audio and motion: Test a representative scene that includes both. Verify the sound, movement, encoder output, and YouTube stream-health status before relying on a continuous run.

YouTube advises running a speed test to check upload bitrate. OBS notes that hardware encoders can reduce CPU work by shifting encoding to a specialized GPU component, but that does not mean a particular DigitalOcean Droplet exposes a usable hardware encoder. Verify the instance and software environment rather than assuming NVENC or another hardware encoder is available.

Benchmark, monitor, and resize from evidence

  1. Build the intended workload: Use the same encoder, codec, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, audio, and number of streams planned for production.
  2. Run a sustained test: Check for dropped frames and interruptions over a representative period, not only during a brief startup test. Confirm YouTube reports a healthy incoming stream.
  3. Watch resource graphs: DigitalOcean monitoring covers CPU, memory, disk, and bandwidth. Look for sustained CPU pressure, memory constraints, or transfer approaching the allowance, and configure alerts where useful (DigitalOcean Monitoring documentation).
  4. Change one variable at a time: If the stream struggles, distinguish an encoder/CPU bottleneck from network, ingest, or configuration problems before resizing. Repeat the sustained test after a change.

A Droplet configuration cannot promise continuous availability by itself. The result also depends on the workload, software, network path, YouTube ingest, and operational monitoring; the cited plan information does not establish an uptime guarantee for an individual stream.

Check content rights and channel requirements

Infrastructure sizing does not grant permission to stream music, films, or other video, and a Droplet does not establish that a channel is eligible to use YouTube Live. Confirm YouTube’s live-stream requirements and the rights for every item in the playlist before broadcasting. For a practical preflight, use StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on a YouTube channel rather than operate and monitor your own server, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It runs the loop in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. The video streams as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube; it is not a camera-based live production service. Start the free day on StreamNeo.
