You can run a prerecorded video or compatible playlist continuously to YouTube Live from a Windows VPS by enabling live streaming on your channel, creating an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, and sending its stream URL and key from FFmpeg. Use -stream_loop -1 to repeat one file and -nostdin for background operation. A command alone does not provide 24/7 reliability: you also need a VPS with sustained upload capacity, a tested process-restart plan, and monitoring.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Check the current requirements at YouTube’s live-streaming getting started page.
- A Windows VPS that can read the media, run your chosen FFmpeg build, and sustain the required outbound bitrate. Check the host’s supported Windows version, CPU capacity, traffic terms, and ability to manage startup and restart behavior. Do not assume a plan can encode a particular profile without testing it.
- A video file or prepared playlist, an FFmpeg build with the encoders you intend to use, and access to YouTube Studio.
- Enough upload capacity for the stream. YouTube recommends accounting for the primary stream plus any backup stream and allowing 20% additional headroom; test the VPS’s actual outbound connection rather than relying on its download speed. See YouTube’s live encoder guidance.
Enable YouTube Live and create an encoder stream
- In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or schedule a stream. Follow the labels in the current Studio interface, which may change.
- In Live Control Room, copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream. Enter both in FFmpeg. The endpoint and protocol depend on the settings YouTube displays; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest. Its encoder guidance covers supported protocols and settings: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Treat the stream key as a password: keep it out of screenshots and public logs, store it somewhere protected, and limit access to the Windows account that runs FFmpeg. If it is exposed or stops working, reset or replace it in Live Control Room and update the encoder. YouTube’s instructions are at Manage live stream settings.
Choose a loop and output settings
Loop one video
For a single file, FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 option requests indefinite looping. The example below re-encodes the video and audio rather than copying the source tracks. Re-encoding gives you control over output settings but uses VPS CPU; stream-copying uses less CPU but only works when the source codecs, tracks, and container are suitable for the chosen output.
Build a playlist
For multiple files, FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can read a list in order. Its inputs need compatible streams, codecs, and time bases; inaccurate stored durations can cause timestamp gaps or artifacts. Prepare and check the media in advance, or use a concat-filter/re-encode approach when sources differ. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
Match YouTube’s ingest recommendations
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); AAC or MP3 audio; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Choose the bitrate for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate from YouTube’s table rather than applying one number to every stream. For example, its table lists 14 Mbps recommended and 5 Mbps minimum for H.264 at 1080p30. YouTube transcodes incoming streams for different playback formats. Refer to the official encoder settings before choosing values.

Example FFmpeg command for a single looping file
This is an illustrative template, not a tested command. Replace the paths, endpoint, key, and encoding values to suit your file, FFmpeg build, YouTube profile, and VPS capacity. The 4.5 Mbps video bitrate below is only an example; it is not a recommendation for every resolution or frame rate. Test privately or unlisted before relying on it.

The sample assumes a build with libx264 and a compatible MP4 source. The two-second GOP implied by -g 60 applies to the example’s 30 fps output; if you change frame rate, adjust keyframe settings to preserve the intended interval. Confirm the options against your installed FFmpeg version and source media. FFmpeg documents its command structure and background input behavior in its command-line documentation and FAQ.

Run FFmpeg in the background and plan for recovery
Run FFmpeg under a Windows account with read access to the media and permission to write logs. Use absolute paths and a known working directory. Include -nostdin so FFmpeg does not wait for console input when running in the background; FFmpeg’s FAQ also documents redirecting standard input from NUL on Windows.
Configure a Windows startup or process supervisor appropriate to the VPS’s Windows Server version. Set a restart policy and delay, capture error output, and prevent duplicate FFmpeg processes. Test the actual configuration on that host; Task Scheduler and service-wrapper details differ by Windows image and are not universal. A restart policy can relaunch a process that exits, but it cannot fix a bad input file, invalid key, suspended VPS, or inadequate network. FFmpeg’s documentation describes background execution and FIFO muxer recovery options, but those options are not a substitute for testing a Windows VPS supervisor.

Test the stream and monitor it
- Start FFmpeg and confirm that Live Control Room receives the feed.
- Check the preview before making the stream public. Verify picture, audio, and stream health. YouTube recommends testing with similar motion and audio to what you plan to broadcast, then monitoring quality while live; see its live encoder guidance.
- Watch FFmpeg’s output and exit status, VPS CPU and memory use, outbound network, disk space, and media availability. These checks help identify failures in the chain; they do not guarantee uptime.
- If the connection drops, determine whether FFmpeg exited or whether the host, network, input, or YouTube key caused the interruption. A supervisor can restart a failed process, but may need a delay and alerting to avoid repeated failure or duplicate streams.
- Plan the archive separately: YouTube automatically archives streams shorter than 12 hours. For a continuous broadcast, do not assume one stream will create an indefinitely growing archive. Check current platform behavior, decide when to end and recreate a stream, and keep a local copy if you need one. Details are in YouTube’s encoder instructions.
Common problems and fixes

Copyright and continuous programming
Only stream material you have the rights and permissions to use. A video being publicly viewable or already online does not by itself establish that you may rebroadcast it. Review YouTube’s current policies and the rights for every video, music track, and other included material before scheduling a long-running stream. Also plan programming and archive handling around the 12-hour archive behavior described above.
