You can install OBS on an Ubuntu Contabo VPS and use it to loop a video on YouTube Live—but only if the VPS image has a working graphical display and graphics support. A headless SSH login or VNC access alone does not establish that OBS can render or stream reliably. Confirm the operating system, display setup and capacity of your specific VPS before building the workflow.

Check the VPS before installing OBS

OBS for Linux needs an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and an X window system or Wayland. OBS cautions that meeting its basic requirements does not guarantee a system can stream or record; demands vary with the encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. OBS system requirements

Contabo documents VPS plans with shared vCPU resources and remote VNC access, but those facts do not confirm that your chosen plan or OS image includes a desktop, suitable graphics support or enough capacity for continuous streaming. Check those details for your exact instance before proceeding. Contabo VPS plans

  • Confirm that the VPS runs an Ubuntu release supported by the OBS installation route below.
  • Establish that the image has a usable graphical environment and display server, not just SSH access.
  • Verify that the graphics stack meets OBS’s Linux requirements; do not assume VNC supplies it.
  • Choose a stream resolution and frame rate your instance can sustain, then validate them with a representative test.

Install OBS on Ubuntu

OBS’s documented Ubuntu route uses its PPA and apt for Ubuntu 18.04 or newer. The guide was published in 2021, so confirm that the instructions and packages still apply to your VPS’s actual Ubuntu release before running them. For distributions other than Ubuntu, OBS recommends Flathub. OBS Linux installation guide

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Connect to the VPS and verify its Ubuntu version. If you cannot confirm that it is Ubuntu 18.04 or newer and supported by the current package route, pause and check the OBS guidance for your release.
  2. Follow the Ubuntu PPA and apt installation steps in the official OBS Linux installation guide. The package install does not create a graphical desktop or guarantee that OBS can use the instance’s graphics stack.
  3. Start OBS from the VPS’s graphical session. If the application does not open or cannot initialize graphics, resolve the desktop/display or graphics issue before configuring a stream.

Access the VPS display with Contabo VNC

Contabo’s VNC instructions require enabling VNC, rebooting the server, retrieving the current connection credentials and connecting with a third-party VNC client. VNC provides remote access to a display; it does not prove that the OS image has a desktop or that OBS rendering is supported. Contabo VNC instructions

  1. Enable VNC for the VPS in Contabo’s control panel and reboot as instructed.
  2. Retrieve the current VNC connection details and use them in a third-party VNC client.
  3. Check that the session actually presents a working desktop and that OBS launches within it. If the image is headless, VNC access by itself will not install or configure a desktop/display stack.

Configure a video loop in OBS

Loop one video file

  1. In OBS, create or select a scene.
  2. Add a Media Source to the scene and select the video file stored on the VPS.
  3. Enable the source’s Loop option so playback restarts when the file ends.
  4. Check the scene preview and audio before sending the stream to YouTube.

OBS Media Source supports local video files and its Loop option restarts playback when the file ends. OBS Media Sources

Loop multiple files

  1. Install VLC on the VPS.
  2. Add a VLC Video source in OBS and configure the files as a playlist.
  3. Enable Loop Playlist and verify the order, picture and audio in the preview.

OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed and supports looping a playlist. OBS Media Sources

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Live, obtain the stream key and ingest details for the event. In OBS, configure the stream service and use the matching YouTube ingest settings.
  2. Prefer RTMPS for a routine loop. YouTube recommends RTMPS, CBR encoding and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. YouTube encoder settings
  3. Set a resolution, frame rate and bitrate that your VPS’s available upload capacity can reliably sustain. Do not pick a bitrate solely because it is a published maximum; validate the actual VPS connection under load.
  4. Use audio and video representative of the intended broadcast, start a test stream, and check YouTube’s stream health and warnings before leaving it unattended. YouTube specifically advises testing before going live. YouTube encoder settings

Treat the stream key as a credential: do not expose it in screenshots, shared configuration files or logs. If it is disclosed, replace it in YouTube and update OBS.

When HLS makes sense

YouTube also supports OBS as an HLS encoder, but HLS has higher latency than RTMP. It requires selecting an HLS stream key and URL and meeting YouTube’s segment and rolling-playlist requirements; its current setup guidance specifies segment duration between 1 and 4 seconds. Use HLS when its requirements fit your use case, rather than as the default for a routine loop where lower latency matters. YouTube HLS setup guidance

Validate before leaving the stream unattended

  • Confirm the loop restarts correctly, playlist order is right if applicable, and intended audio is audible.
  • Watch a representative test in YouTube and review stream-health indicators and warnings.
  • Check that the VPS can sustain the chosen resolution, frame rate and bitrate over an extended run. The available evidence does not establish reliability for any particular Contabo instance or configuration.
  • After a test, confirm OBS remains connected and the source continues playing before relying on the VPS for a long-running broadcast.

Troubleshooting common setup failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
OBS will not launch or reports a graphics/display error The VPS may lack a usable desktop/display server or compatible graphics support; SSH or VNC access alone does not establish either. Confirm the image has a working X or Wayland session and meets OBS’s OpenGL requirement. Resolve the display/graphics setup before configuring output. OBS requirements
VNC connects but there is no usable desktop VNC provides remote display access, but the OS image may not include a desktop/display stack. Check the image and desktop setup separately, and follow Contabo’s enable, reboot and credential steps for VNC. Contabo VNC instructions
A Media Source stops at the end of the file The source’s Loop option is not enabled. Open the Media Source properties, enable Loop and test the end-to-start transition. OBS Media Sources
A VLC playlist does not play or loop VLC may not be installed, or the VLC Video source’s playlist/Loop Playlist settings may be incomplete. Install VLC, verify the playlist entries, enable Loop Playlist and test playback in the preview. OBS Media Sources
YouTube reports unstable stream health or warnings The selected bitrate or resolution may exceed sustainable VPS upload capacity, or encoder settings may not follow YouTube’s recommendations. Use CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (never over four seconds), and a lower resolution or bitrate if needed; retest with representative content. YouTube encoder settings
The stream does not connect with HLS settings HLS requires the HLS stream key and URL plus compliant segment and rolling-playlist settings. Check the selected HLS credentials and YouTube’s segment requirements, or use RTMPS for a routine lower-latency setup. YouTube HLS setup guidance
