Musk, Alex Gibney’s 225-minute documentary about Elon Musk, may have vanished from many U.S. cinemas after a rapid expansion—but a nationwide theater pull has not been confirmed. Reporting described a sharp drop in available showtimes and found no listings at randomly selected Fandango theaters, while the distributor’s own theater page was marked last updated October 20 and checked on October 23. That timing makes the apparent change real enough to investigate, but not conclusive proof that every market lost the film or that anyone ordered it removed.
Was Musk actually pulled from theaters?
There is no reliable confirmation of a nationwide withdrawal. Showbiz411 claimed the film was “gone from almost every theater in America,” but the report included an unclear account of the distributor’s listing and a blurry screenshot. The account examined here found no corroborating report from another established outlet.
Justin Caffier, the article’s byline author, wrote: “No other outlet of good or ill repute is saying Musk’s been pulled.” That is an assessment of the evidence at the time, not a guarantee that every theater still had a booking. The author’s own checks found no showtimes at randomly selected Fandango theaters, but those spot checks cannot establish the status of all U.S. cinemas.

Bleecker Street’s movie page still placed Musk under “Now Playing in Theaters” when crawled. However, the company’s theater list was labeled “last updated October 20,” whereas the reported inspection occurred October 23. A dated or stale listing can leave a film appearing available after individual cinemas have changed their schedules.

What happened to the film’s theatrical rollout?
The reported release pattern was unusually fast. The documentary opened in four theaters in New York and Los Angeles on October 9, 2026, then expanded to 472 screens the following Friday. The reported box-office figures show that the expansion did not translate into strong per-screen performance.
| Milestone | Figure reported | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Opening weekend | $68,900 total | Reported by Gizmodo (2026) |
| Opening-weekend average | $17,225 per screen | Reported by Gizmodo (2026) |
| Post-expansion footprint | 472 screens | Reported for the Friday after the October 9 opening |
| Second weekend | $290,000 total | Reported by Gizmodo (2026) |
| Second-weekend average | $614 per screen | Reported by Gizmodo (2026) |
| Cumulative gross | $571,902 | Box Office Mojo figure cited as of the article’s publication |
These numbers are figures presented in the reporting, not an independently audited box-office dataset in the available material. A second-weekend average of $614 across the expanded footprint helps explain why bookings could be reduced quickly, but it does not by itself prove that theaters collectively removed the documentary or identify who made individual scheduling decisions.

Could politics or the distributor’s sale explain the change?
The available evidence does not establish a cause. Musk reportedly called the documentary a “psyop,” and TikTok suspended its promotional ad account before restoring it and attributing the suspension to an error. Those events provide publicity context, not proof that political pressure affected cinema bookings.

Bleecker Street was purchased on October 15 by Outerlight Entertainment, described as backed by Pierre Omidyar. The acquisition occurred shortly before the reported theater-listing change, but the reporting does not connect the transaction to any withdrawal decision. Treating the timing as causation would go beyond what has been documented.

Where can you watch Musk now?
Availability depends on both geography and format, and the listings reviewed were changing quickly. The clearest way to interpret them is to separate a confirmed current showtime from a dated digital preorder or an unverified report of disappearing bookings.
| Option | Status in the reviewed listings | What it proves |
|---|---|---|
| Theaters | JustWatch’s U.S. page, checked October 23, 2026, listed theatrical ticket options; individual Fandango spot checks found no showtimes | Availability varied by market; it does not establish nationwide access or a nationwide pull |
| Prime Video | UHD digital preorder with a release date marked forthcoming | A preorder listing, not streaming access today |
| Fandango at Home | Search results showed a UHD preorder listing | Another digital preorder indication, without a confirmed release date |
| DVD or Blu-ray | Not established in the reviewed sources | No confirmed physical-media edition |
JustWatch’s page covered the United States and said it checked 376 streaming services on October 23, 2026. It found no online streaming offer at that time. Because theater schedules and retailer pages can change, check your local cinema listings and the retailer page immediately before planning a viewing.

What should viewers make of the “two weeks” claim?
“After only two weeks” describes the interval between the October 9 opening and the October 23 checks, when many listings reportedly no longer showed the film. It should not be read as a confirmed two-week national run: the documentary had an initial four-theater engagement, then a 472-screen expansion, and the evidence comes from a mixture of reported listings and limited spot checks.
- Confirmed context: the film opened October 9 in New York and Los Angeles, expanded the next Friday, and recorded the reported grosses above.
- Reported but unconfirmed: a near-total disappearance from U.S. theaters.
- Not established: a nationwide pull order, political pressure, a link to the Bleecker Street sale, or a physical disc release.
How should you verify a screening or home release?
- Search the cinema’s own schedule for your city and date rather than relying on a general “now playing” page.
- Check a ticket aggregator for the same location; a result missing from one service may reflect a delayed update.
- For home viewing, distinguish “preorder” from “stream now” and look for an explicit release date.
- Recheck within 24 hours, because a dated distributor list or retailer page may lag behind schedule changes.

Did Elon Musk try to stop the documentary from being shown?
The available reporting says Musk called the film a “psyop.” It does not document a successful legal order or other action that removed the film from cinemas.
Is Musk streaming on Prime Video right now?
The reviewed Prime Video page identified a UHD digital preorder with a release date listed as forthcoming. A preorder is not confirmation that the film can be streamed immediately.
Has a DVD or Blu-ray release been announced?
No physical DVD or Blu-ray edition was established in the listings reviewed. A retailer’s digital UHD preorder should not be treated as evidence of a disc release.
