Spoilers for Season 1, Episode 4, “Sic Semper Systema.” Wilson Fisk gets moments of surprising levity in this episode, but the laughs sharpen rather than soften his menace. As the mayor manages a leak and pushes a Red Hook redevelopment plan, Matt Murdock confronts the limits of legal justice in the wake of Hector Ayala’s death—and crosses paths with Frank Castle.
What happens in “Sic Semper Systema”?
Directed by Jeffrey Nachmanoff, Episode 4 follows two pressures building at once: Matt is trying to make the justice system answer for Hector Ayala’s death, while Fisk uses the machinery of city politics to advance his plans and contain threats to his authority. The episode’s darkly comic Fisk moments play against that violence and control, not apart from them.
Matt tries to make justice personal
After Hector’s death, Matt visits the morgue and speaks with Hector’s niece, Angela. She suspects the police were involved. Matt tells her someone has to find the killer, though the promise sounds less certain than he wants it to.
His work as a lawyer brings the same problem down to a smaller, painful scale. Matt represents Leroy Bradford, arrested for stealing snack food. He can negotiate a shorter sentence, but that does not resolve Bradford’s deeper complaint: the system is ready to punish petty survival without offering much help. Bradford’s line, “So why’d I get the caramel corn? I like that shit, and it tastes good,” is funny in its bluntness and bleak in what it exposes about the case.

Fisk’s plans, leak, and private anger
BB Urich gets information from Daniel Blake about Fisk’s agenda and reports on the mayor. Fisk wants to redevelop Red Hook, but political constraints and union issues complicate the plan. When the leak is exposed, Daniel confesses. Fisk’s anger gives way to a decision to keep him in his job, a response that can read as almost wryly practical—until the threat behind the mayor’s composed public performance becomes unmistakable.
At therapy with Heather Glenn, Vanessa’s affair with Adam comes into the open. Fisk says he does not know where Adam is. Later, the episode reveals Adam imprisoned in a cage in Fisk’s private hideout. The contrast turns Fisk’s apparent domestic composure into another performance: the man who can seem socially legible is also capable of hidden, deliberate cruelty.

Why is the episode called “Sic Semper Systema”?
The title can be read as a play on “Sic semper tyrannis,” the Latin phrase commonly rendered as “thus always to tyrants.” The Ringer’s recap offers that interpretation, but the episode sources do not establish an official explanation of the title. The word “systema” also fits the episode’s central concern: Matt is trying to work within institutions that fail people, while Fisk seeks to bend political systems to his own aims.
Does the Punisher appear in Episode 4?
Yes. While investigating Hector’s shooting, Matt finds a casing marked with the Punisher’s symbol and confronts Frank Castle. Frank challenges Matt for leaving the person responsible for Foggy’s death to the justice system. Their argument is more than a clash of tactics: Matt’s grief is pressing against his belief that legal process still matters, while Frank insists that process can fail victims.

Their opposing methods sharpen the episode’s conflict. Matt is still trying to make institutions deliver justice; Frank acts outside them. Neither approach erases the cost of what happened to Foggy or Hector.
Who is Muse at the end of the episode?
The final sequence introduces Muse as a masked killer. He is shown in a concealed lair with a captive and disturbing artwork, a brief but unsettling reveal that establishes him as a new threat. The scene does not explain his identity or motives; it leaves those questions open.

What is Wilson Fisk planning for Red Hook?
Fisk is pursuing a redevelopment plan for Red Hook. The episode shows that the proposal runs into political and union-related complications, while BB’s reporting exposes information about his plans. The conflict connects Fisk’s public role as mayor to the same appetite for control seen in his private life: he wants to shape the city, manage dissent, and keep damaging information contained.
