Former 10/11 News anchor Courtney Johns received a roughly three-minute phone confession from Aubrey Trail in February 2018, months after Sydney Loofe disappeared. Trail told Johns the call would be “the news that’s going to make your career.” Her station broadcast only part of it because staff could not verify every allegation and weighed the effect on Loofe’s family.
That call is revisited in Swipe Right on the Devil, a three-episode Hulu documentary series about Loofe’s 2017 murder, the investigation and the convictions of Trail and Bailey Boswell. Hulu premiered the series on October 22, 2026.
What did Aubrey Trail tell Courtney Johns?
Trail called Johns after she finished anchoring the 4 p.m. newscast at Lincoln’s 10/11 News (1011 Now). In the phone conversation, he claimed responsibility for Sydney Loofe’s death and delivered a confession that lasted about three minutes, according to the production’s transcript and Johns’s account.

Johns later explained that he wanted the attention and that she did not want to make him “the voice of Sydney during the last moments of her life.” Those lines come from a subtitle transcript rather than a verified official English transcript, so they are best treated as paraphrased reporting unless the production publishes an authoritative transcript.

Trail’s later descriptions of motive and the killing remain his statements. They should not be confused with the facts established through the criminal proceedings.
Why did 10/11 News broadcast only part of the call?
The newsroom did not air the entire recording because it could not independently verify every claim Trail made. Editors also considered how broadcasting a lengthy, unverified confession could affect Loofe’s relatives and the public understanding of the case.
The decision left viewers with a partial account while investigators continued reconstructing events. The documentary uses Johns’s contemporaneous reporting to show how a newsroom handled a sensational source who appeared to be pursuing the spotlight.

Sydney Loofe was 24 when she was murdered in Nebraska in 2017. She met Bailey Boswell through Tinder; investigators later connected Boswell and Aubrey Trail to the disappearance.

The Lincoln Police Department has said, “Our hearts remain with Sydney’s family as they continue to navigate the impact of this senseless murder and a life lost far too soon.”
What happened to Aubrey Trail and Bailey Boswell?
Trail and Boswell were convicted in separate proceedings connected to Loofe’s murder. WOWT reports that Trail received a death sentence in June 2021, while Boswell received life in prison.

Those convictions and sentences are procedural facts. By contrast, Trail’s explanations of what happened, why it happened or what Boswell intended are claims attributed to him in interviews and documentary material. Viewers should keep that distinction in mind when the series places his account beside investigators’ reconstruction, witness testimony and the family’s perspective.
What is Swipe Right on the Devil about?
The Hulu series follows Loofe’s disappearance and murder through archival material and interviews with Lincoln Police Department investigators Matt Franken and Bob Hurley, family members, witnesses and journalists. It also includes a brief prison interview with Trail.
The production’s structure lets several kinds of evidence sit alongside one another: Johns’s account of the 2018 call, police work tracing the Tinder connection, testimony from people affected by the case and Trail’s changing explanations. A prison interview can document what Trail says, but it does not alter the legal findings reached in court.

How does the documentary separate fact from allegation?
The clearest way to read the series is to track each account by chronology, speaker and evidentiary status. The 2017 disappearance, the December 4 discovery of remains, the February 2018 call and the later trials form the timeline; Johns, investigators, witnesses, relatives and Trail supply different perspectives on that timeline.

Why is Courtney Johns’s call central to the story?
The call captures the case at a moment when a suspect attempted to control the news narrative directly. Johns had to decide what could responsibly be broadcast while Loofe’s family was still dealing with the disappearance and investigators were checking the story.
By returning to that recording alongside later interviews and court outcomes, the series shows both the news value and the limits of a confession delivered by phone. The result is a media-history thread within the larger account of Loofe’s murder.
