If you want prerecorded videos to keep a YouTube channel live around the clock, the lowest-maintenance alternative to a Contabo VPS is a cloud streaming service. For more control, use a self-managed VPS or dedicated server; for an on-site setup, consider a hardware encoder. The right choice depends on whether you want to manage the encoder yourself, how much control you need, and how you will monitor failures.
Contabo alternatives at a glance
| Option | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Creators who want uploaded videos to loop continuously on YouTube without keeping a computer running | It is a managed cloud service for YouTube, not a general-purpose server or camera encoder. |
| Self-managed VPS | People who want server control and can install, supervise, and recover an encoder | Shared virtual CPU performance and outbound-traffic terms need checking; you handle operations. |
| Dedicated-core virtual server (VDS) | Workloads where dedicated CPU allocation and reserved RAM matter | Still requires you to configure and maintain the streaming software. |
| Bare-metal dedicated server | Operators who need direct control of physical server hardware | Requires server administration and a careful review of cost, location, and traffic terms. |
| Gyre | Managed cloud playback of prerecorded video | Check current plan limits, pricing, and availability before choosing. |
| AJA HELO Plus | On-site encoding, including scheduled prerecorded playback | Physical hardware does not provide remote hosted-server operations. |
YouTube’s verified encoder directory lists Gyre for cloud-based 24/7 streaming of prerecorded video and AJA HELO Plus as a hardware encoder with scheduled prerecorded playback. These are different approaches, not interchangeable server plans. YouTube’s encoder directory does not establish current prices or plan limits for these alternatives.
1. StreamNeo: the managed cloud option
StreamNeo is #1 for a creator who wants a prerecorded YouTube stream to stay on without running a home computer: it loops uploaded video from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and gives the first day free.
Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo handles continuous looping and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot includes one always-on stream and 10 GB of storage, pooled across active slots. The service plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a live camera feed.

Contabo’s product documentation distinguishes its shared-CPU VPS from its Cloud VDS, which uses dedicated physical CPU cores and reserved RAM. Its dedicated servers are bare metal. These are product categories, not proof that one is the best fit for a particular stream. Compare the server’s location, sustained outbound traffic conditions, storage, CPU allocation, and total current cost for your workload. Contabo describes VPS traffic as unlimited subject to fair use and says exceptionally high or disruptive use may be throttled; do not treat “unlimited” as an unconditional guarantee for sustained streaming. See Contabo’s current pricing and fair-use terms, its VPS documentation, and its Cloud VDS documentation (last updated June 2026).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat to evaluate before moving a stream
- CPU allocation: shared virtual cores and dedicated physical cores are different offerings. A higher advertised core count alone does not guarantee smooth encoding.
- Encode or relay: encoding video on the server takes different resources from relaying an already-encoded stream. Capacity depends on resolution, frame rate, codec, number of streams, and source format.
- Outbound traffic: read the provider’s fair-use and throttling terms for sustained use, not just the headline traffic allowance.
- Operations: decide how you will restart a failed process, receive alerts, recover after server reboots, and switch to a backup encoder.
- Location and cost: compare available regions and the total price for the server and any additional services you need. Prices and configurations can change by region and over time.
3. VDS or bare metal: when you need more predictable infrastructure
Dedicated-core virtual server
A VDS may be worth considering when predictable CPU allocation matters, especially if the server itself must encode the video. Contabo describes Cloud VDS as having dedicated physical CPU cores and reserved RAM. That distinction does not remove the need to install, monitor, and recover the streaming process.
Bare-metal dedicated server
A dedicated server gives you control over physical hardware, but you remain responsible for server administration and stream reliability. Assess the available region, total cost, and traffic policy against your needs. Contabo’s pricing page lists configurations and includes fair-use language; check the live page for current terms rather than relying on a fixed price copied into an article.

4. Managed playback or a hardware encoder
Gyre for cloud-based prerecorded streaming
YouTube’s verified-encoder directory identifies Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded video. It is relevant if your priority is managed playback rather than maintaining a server. The directory does not establish its current pricing, limits, or availability, so verify those directly before committing.
AJA HELO Plus for an on-site setup
YouTube lists AJA HELO Plus as a verified hardware encoder, with scheduled prerecorded playback capability. Hardware can suit an on-site workflow that should run independently of a general-purpose computer. It is not a hosted server and does not replace remote infrastructure when hosting is the requirement.

What you need for a self-managed YouTube stream
An encoder turns video into a digital format for streaming. In YouTube’s live-control workflow, configure the encoder with the stream URL and stream key for the broadcast. The key acts like a password: do not publish it, and reset it if you believe it has been exposed. YouTube recommends RTMPS and advises creators to test encoder settings and monitor stream health while live. See YouTube’s stream-key guidance and its encoder settings and streaming guidance.

Encoder settings to check
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, not more than 4 seconds.
- Bitrate mode: use constant bitrate encoding as recommended by YouTube.
- Codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 among its codec choices. Check the current official settings table for the recommendations that match your resolution, frame rate, and codec.
- Resolution and bitrate: select the recommendation for your specific profile from YouTube’s current settings table. A single bitrate value does not establish the server capacity needed for every encoding workload.
- Transport: use RTMPS where supported, in line with YouTube’s guidance.
Keep the YouTube stream URL and key private. A stream key is a credential, not a public channel identifier. If it is compromised, reset it in YouTube’s live-stream settings and update the encoder with the replacement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Reliability: plan for the stream to fail
A 24/7 stream can stop because the encoder process exits, the server reboots, the network drops, the stream key is invalid, or the encoder is overloaded. A hosting provider’s server uptime or traffic terms do not guarantee uninterrupted YouTube ingestion. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring; for important broadcasts, also verify local archive files and test encoder failover before relying on it.
- Use process supervision or another restart mechanism so a crashed encoder is not left stopped indefinitely.
- Set up monitoring or alerts for process exit and loss of stream health.
- Keep a tested backup encoder or recovery plan, including a secure way to replace the stream key if necessary.
- If you need your own recording, maintain a local or independent recording workflow rather than treating YouTube’s archive as the only copy.
Copyright, archives, and continuous streams
Having permission to upload a video does not automatically settle every question about using it in a continuous YouTube broadcast. Confirm that you have the rights needed for the video, music, and other included material, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization rules before streaming. A continuous playlist should not be treated as a way around those rules.

YouTube’s archive guidance says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If keeping a complete recording matters, use a local or independent recording workflow. This is YouTube-specific behavior, not a general rule for streaming platforms. See YouTube’s archive guidance and YouTube’s live-stream operational tips.
Move from Contabo without losing control of the stream
- Choose the operating model: decide whether you want managed cloud playback, a self-managed server, or on-site hardware. Match it to whether you are looping uploaded video or need to encode a live source.
- Record your working configuration: note the current resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate mode, keyframe interval, and recovery steps. Keep the stream key private.
- Prepare the replacement: configure the new service or server and test the source and encoder settings before relying on it for continuous playback.
- Monitor the transition: check YouTube’s stream health and verify that the new process remains active. Avoid assuming a server migration alone guarantees continuity.
- Confirm recording needs: if you need a complete archive, ensure the local or independent recording workflow is running and verified.
Or let it run in the cloud
