To put a YouTube live stream on your own webpage, open its YouTube watch page, choose Share → Embed, copy the iframe code, and paste it into your site’s HTML or embed block. Publish the page and test it at its public URL while the event is scheduled or live. The player remains hosted by YouTube; your page displays it.
Choose what the page should show
Decide whether visitors need one particular broadcast or a collection of videos. YouTube supports embeds for both videos and playlists. A single scheduled stream gives the page a fixed event to point to; a playlist is useful when the page should present a collection. Use the relevant watch page or playlist when generating the embed code.
If the event is not yet live, schedule it in YouTube first and use its watch page. A civic live-streaming checklist from Google recommends testing the complete setup privately, scheduling the stream, placing its URL on the website, and planning chat moderation. It also advises using accessible titles and robust descriptions. YouTube’s embedding instructions explain the basic workflow.
Embed the YouTube player
- Open the video or scheduled event’s watch page. Use the page for the stream you want visitors to watch.
- Select Share → Embed. Copy the iframe HTML YouTube provides.
- Paste the iframe into your webpage. In a website builder, use its HTML, custom-code, or embed block; in a hand-built site, place the code in the page’s HTML where the player should appear. Keep the YouTube iframe intact.
- Set an appropriate size and publish. Keep the player’s proportions responsive so it fits narrow screens without becoming too small.
- Open the actual published page to check it. Test on desktop and mobile, and confirm playback when the event is scheduled or live.
YouTube’s player requirements set a minimum viewport of 200 × 200 pixels. For a 16:9 player, Google recommends at least 480 × 270 pixels. These are player dimensions, not a guarantee of a particular visual quality or viewer experience. Customize the player carefully
YouTube documents iframe parameters for options such as autoplay, captions, controls, and playlist behavior. Add only parameters documented for the current player, and check their current behavior before relying on them. Older options may no longer work: for example, modestbranding is deprecated and has no effect. For most event pages, start with YouTube’s generated embed and add customization only when it serves a clear purpose. See YouTube Embedded Players and Player Parameters.
Standard or privacy-enhanced embed
The standard embed uses YouTube’s regular hostname. For a website embed, you can use YouTube’s privacy-enhanced mode by changing the iframe hostname to youtube-nocookie.com. YouTube says this prevents embedded views from influencing personalization of the viewer’s YouTube browsing experience and that ads served in that mode are non-personalized. It does not mean the host website cannot collect or process information under its own policies, including if someone leaves the embed.

Autoplay and captions
Autoplay behavior depends on the browser and player conditions, so do not make it the only way visitors can start playback. If you add autoplay or caption parameters, verify them on the published page. Keep controls accessible so viewers can start, pause, or adjust playback themselves.
Add live chat as a separate embed
If you want chat beside the video, it requires a second iframe in addition to the player. Ecamm’s April 1, 2026 guide describes a live-chat embed URL that includes the video ID and an embed_domain value. Set that domain to the exact hostname visitors use to open the page—for example, distinguish example.com from www.example.com. Plan for moderation before adding chat to a public event. A chat panel adds another element to manage and should be checked on mobile as well as desktop.
Publish and test the page
- Confirm the correct scheduled event or video appears, rather than a different upload or an expired event.
- Check that the player fits the page on desktop and mobile and meets YouTube’s minimum viewport requirement.
- Test chat separately, if included, using the exact hostname and video ID.
- Use the public webpage as the playback test. A YouTube embed URL opened directly in a browser’s address bar may lack the enclosing page/referrer context needed for playback.
- Test playback in the page’s real public context. YouTube identifies missing referrer information as a possible cause of error 153.
- Check access restrictions. Age-restricted videos generally cannot be watched on most third-party websites and may redirect viewers to YouTube.
For sites directed at children, YouTube says the site must be self-designated as child-directed under its requirements. Common problems and fixes
The iframe is blank or playback shows error 153
One possible cause is missing referrer information because the player is being opened outside its enclosing webpage. Test the published page, not the raw embed address. If it still fails, check the page’s embedding setup and confirm it is being served in a normal webpage context.
The player is cropped or difficult to use on a phone
Check the player dimensions and responsive layout. Preserve a usable viewing area and avoid shrinking a 16:9 player below Google’s recommended 480 × 270 pixels where the page layout allows it; the documented minimum viewport is 200 × 200 pixels.

The chat panel does not load
Verify that its URL uses the correct video ID and that embed_domain exactly matches the hostname in the visitor’s address bar, including whether it uses www or a subdomain. Test the page on the deployed domain rather than only in a local preview.
Viewers are sent to YouTube instead of watching on the page
The video may be age-restricted; YouTube says such videos generally cannot be watched on most third-party websites. Confirm the video’s restrictions and provide a clear route to its YouTube watch page for visitors who are redirected.
A player option has no visible effect
Check the current player-parameter documentation. Some older options, including modestbranding, are deprecated and have no effect.
