YouTube TV and Paramount reached a short-term extension late on February 13 or early February 14, 2025, then announced a broader agreement on February 15–16. YouTube TV therefore continued carrying Paramount channels, including CBS, CBS Sports, Nickelodeon and other networks.
The dispute was nevertheless significant because it showed how a carriage agreement can put both a local broadcast station and popular cable networks at risk—even when the programmer’s own streaming service remains available. It also involved more than the two networks named in the original warning.
What was the YouTube TV–Paramount dispute?
YouTube TV’s distribution agreement with Paramount was approaching expiration in February 2025. Before the deadline, YouTube TV warned subscribers that Paramount programming could disappear after February 13 if the companies failed to reach a renewal agreement.
That programming included CBS, a broadcast network available through local stations in many U.S. markets, and Nickelodeon, a major children’s network. It also included CBS Sports Network, MTV, Comedy Central, BET, Paramount Network, TV Land, VH1 and other Paramount-owned channels.

In plain English, this was a carriage-fee dispute. YouTube TV pays programmers and broadcasters for the right to distribute their channels. When the parties cannot agree on the price, package, or other contract terms, the programmer can withdraw permission to carry the channels. The result is a blackout for subscribers.
Neither side’s public explanation should be treated as an independently established account of who was responsible. YouTube TV said it wanted a fair agreement that preserved Paramount programming without reducing the value of the service or imposing additional costs on subscribers. Paramount said YouTube TV was attempting to pressure it into one-sided or unfavorable terms.
Did CBS and Nickelodeon actually go dark?
No. The February 2025 blackout was ultimately avoided.
- February 12–13: YouTube TV warned that Paramount channels could be removed after the contract deadline.
- Late February 13 or early February 14: YouTube TV announced a short-term extension. Subscribers retained access while negotiations continued.
- February 14: Coverage described the extension as a temporary reprieve rather than a final long-term settlement.
- February 15–16: YouTube TV and Paramount announced a broader agreement. YouTube said it would continue carrying Paramount channels, explicitly including CBS, CBS Sports, Nickelodeon and more.
The companies did not publicly disclose the agreement’s full financial terms. The deal should not be described as a permanent guarantee beyond the information publicly released at the time. A future dispute would require a new notice and separate verification.
Which channels were at risk?
The warning covered a much larger group of networks than CBS and Nickelodeon. Depending on a subscriber’s ZIP code and YouTube TV package, reported affected or potentially affected services included:

This was not a promise that every subscriber received every listed service. YouTube TV channel availability can vary by plan and market. Local CBS access is especially location-dependent because YouTube TV carries particular CBS-owned or affiliated stations rather than one identical local station nationwide.
Why losing CBS would have mattered
CBS is not simply another cable channel in the bundle. In many U.S. markets, YouTube TV subscribers receive their local CBS affiliate through the service. A blackout could therefore have removed local news, CBS network entertainment and other programming, as well as some sports carried by CBS.
The effect would have differed by household. A viewer might have been primarily concerned about the local CBS station, while a family might have been more concerned about Nickelodeon. The threatened removal also demonstrated why a live-TV bundle is different from subscribing directly to one streaming app: the bundle’s channel rights depend on contracts between the distributor and the programmers.

Why losing Nickelodeon would have mattered
Nickelodeon is a live linear children’s network, so losing it from YouTube TV would have affected families that use the service for scheduled children’s programming. Related Paramount brands, including Nick Jr., NickToons and TeenNick, were also among the networks reported as potentially affected.
A family could still have had access to some Paramount-owned shows through another service, but that would not necessarily have reproduced the live Nickelodeon channel, its schedule, YouTube TV’s cloud DVR experience or the rest of the household’s live-TV package.

Paramount+ is an alternative—but not an identical replacement
Paramount+ is the most direct streaming alternative for many Paramount-owned shows and library titles. Paramount says its service includes content from CBS, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, MTV, BET and other brands. Its Premium plan can also provide access to a subscriber’s local CBS station in supported markets.
That does not make Paramount+ a one-for-one replacement for YouTube TV. Before switching, check the details that matter to your household:

- Live channels: access to Paramount+ programming is organized differently from a broad live-TV bundle.
- Sports: the sports channels and events available through Paramount+ may not match what a subscriber received through YouTube TV.
- DVR: Paramount+ and YouTube TV have different recording and playback features.
- Other networks: Paramount+ does not replace every non-Paramount channel in a YouTube TV subscription.
Paramount+ is therefore a sensible option for viewers who mainly want Paramount content, but not automatically the best substitute for a household that uses YouTube TV as its complete live-TV service.
Can an antenna replace YouTube TV for CBS?
Partial workaround: local CBS only
An over-the-air TV antenna may receive a local CBS affiliate when that station broadcasts over the air and the household has adequate signal reception. Reception depends on the station, distance, terrain, building materials, antenna placement and local conditions.
An antenna does not receive Nickelodeon and does not replace most national cable networks, including MTV, Comedy Central or Paramount Network. It is best viewed as a way to preserve local broadcast television—not as a complete replacement for YouTube TV.

Before buying one, check which broadcast stations reach your address and whether an indoor model is likely to work. Outdoor or attic installation may be necessary in locations with weaker reception. An antenna can also be useful independently of this dispute if you want a backup source for local broadcast programming or want to reduce reliance on a live-TV subscription.
What about switching to another live-TV service?
Other live-TV streaming providers may carry CBS and some Paramount cable networks, but there is no universal substitute that can be guaranteed for every reader. Lineups, prices, package requirements, local CBS affiliates and sports rights vary by provider and ZIP code.
If a future Paramount carriage dispute produces an actual blackout, compare services using this checklist:
- Enter your exact ZIP code on the provider’s channel-lineup page.
- Confirm the specific local CBS station—not merely the presence of “CBS” in a national channel list.
- Check whether Nickelodeon and the particular Paramount networks your household watches are included in the base package or require an add-on.
- Compare the total monthly price after regional sports fees, premium packages and equipment charges.
- Review DVR storage, simultaneous streams and playback restrictions.
- Verify that the service carries the sports, news and local channels you would lose from YouTube TV.
Do not cancel YouTube TV solely because of a recycled headline about the February 2025 dispute. Confirm that a new, current blackout notice exists and compare the replacement service at your address first.

What caused the threatened blackout?
YouTube TV and Paramount were renegotiating the distribution agreement that allowed YouTube TV to carry Paramount channels. The public dispute centered on carriage fees and contract terms.
Would Paramount+ replace YouTube TV?
Not completely. Paramount+ can offer Paramount-owned content and may provide local CBS through a supported Premium plan and market, but its live channels, sports, local coverage, DVR features and overall lineup differ from YouTube TV.
Can a TV antenna receive Nickelodeon?
No. An antenna may receive a local broadcast CBS station where reception is adequate, but Nickelodeon is a national cable network and is not an over-the-air antenna channel.

Bottom line: CBS and Nickelodeon did not go dark on YouTube TV in February 2025. A temporary extension and subsequent agreement preserved Paramount programming, although the deal’s full terms were not made public. If a similar dispute happens later, Paramount+ may cover some Paramount content, while an antenna can help with local CBS—but neither option automatically replaces the full YouTube TV bundle.
