Not by itself. Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD are streaming devices, not standalone DVRs. They have no universal Record button or built-in antenna recorder. You can, however, record programs through a compatible live-TV service’s own app, or use a separate antenna tuner and DVR that sends recordings to Apple TV.
First, separate the five things called “Apple TV”
- Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD: the streaming box connected to your television.
- The Apple TV app: an app that brings together Apple content, channels, purchases, rentals and supported connected apps. Apple does not describe it as a universal DVR. See Apple’s Apple TV app guide.
- Apple’s subscription service: the subscription catalog formerly marketed as Apple TV+. It is streamed through the app; owning the box does not add recording rights.
- Third-party live-TV apps: services such as YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, Fubo, DIRECTV, Sling and Philo. Each sets its own DVR rules.
- A DVR: hardware or a provider service that captures a broadcast for later playback. On-demand streaming is different: the provider makes a program available later, but you did not record it.
Can Apple TV record shows on its own?
No. Apple’s current Apple TV documentation lists browsing, live content, channels, purchases, rentals and apps, but no native television-recording workflow. There is no Apple-documented path such as Home Screen → TV app → Record show. The Apple TV app’s Library is for purchases and rentals, not user-created broadcast recordings. See Apple’s Apple TV guide and the Library documentation.
Apple TV also is not presented as a user-accessible recording drive. Its app storage should not be treated as space where you can save and manage television recordings.
How recording works through a live-TV service
When a provider offers DVR, the provider—not the Apple TV box—does the recording. The service normally stores the program in its cloud account, while Apple TV acts as the screen and remote-control interface.
#1 Best Overall
- 4K High Dynamic Range (Dolby Vision and HDR10) for stunning picture quality
- Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound
- A10X Fusion chip for ultra-fast graphics and performance
- Voice search by asking the Siri Remote
- From the Apple TV Home Screen, open the provider’s app.
- Sign in or subscribe to the provider.
- Open its live guide or search for a show, episode, movie or sporting event.
- Choose the provider’s command, such as Record, Add to Library, DVR or Save.
- Later, open that provider’s DVR, Library, My Stuff or Recordings area.
Button names and menu locations vary by service and app version. If a recording is missing from Apple’s Library, that is normally expected: the provider controls the recording library, retention period, playback rights and deletion rules.
Apple supports sign-in for supported pay-TV providers at Settings → Profiles and Accounts → TV Provider → Sign In. Provider availability and features vary by country, Apple TV model, tvOS version and service; some apps still require a separate sign-in. Apple’s guidance is at Apple TV provider sign-in support.
Which live-TV services can record on Apple TV?
Recording capability belongs to the individual service and plan. This is a practical comparison of the models described by their official materials; storage, retention, channel rights and pricing can change.
| Service or setup | How recording works | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube TV | Cloud DVR in the YouTube TV account; YouTube TV advertises unlimited DVR storage and Apple TV access through its service. | Recordings remain subject to subscription, channel rights, playback restrictions and other provider rules. Official details: product page and DVR help. |
| Hulu + Live TV | DVR is supplied within Hulu’s live-TV service. | Current plan structure and retention terms should be checked on Hulu’s live-TV page; Hulu’s historical unlimited-DVR announcement is dated 2022: official announcement. |
| Fubo | Provider-managed DVR through the Fubo app. | Plan limits and sports rights vary. See Fubo. |
| DIRECTV streaming | Provider-managed cloud recording in the DIRECTV service. | Channel packages and restrictions vary. See DIRECTV stream. |
| Sling TV | DVR options are supplied by Sling’s service and plan structure. | Local-channel and storage availability vary. See Sling. |
| Philo and other apps | Use the app’s own recording or saved-content feature when offered. | Do not assume that Apple’s TV app imports every provider’s DVR. Apple lists supported search integrations at Apple’s provider search page. |
YouTube TV’s page currently shows a main plan at $82.99 per month after its promotional period, with an offer displayed as ending August 26, 2026. That is a dated promotional snapshot, not a permanent price; verify the live offer before subscribing. YouTube TV also says eligible content can be downloaded for offline viewing on mobile devices with its 4K Plus add-on. That does not put recordings on Apple TV itself; see YouTube TV’s offline-download help.

Can the Apple TV app combine every service’s recordings?
Not reliably. Apple’s TV app can surface connected apps and channels in supported configurations, but the provider’s own app remains authoritative for recording schedules, storage, expiration, commercial controls and playback. Apple says features and content vary by device, service and region; see the TV app guide and Apple’s availability notes. A subscription purchased through an Apple TV channel should not be assumed to create a DVR folder inside Apple’s Library.
Can you record antenna channels?
Not directly. Apple TV has no over-the-air tuner. An antenna receives the broadcast, a separate tuner captures it, and DVR hardware or software stores it before Apple TV displays the result.
Typical arrangements include:
- An OTA DVR/tuner with an Apple TV app.
- A network tuner paired with compatible DVR software.
- A cable or satellite provider’s DVR and Apple TV app.
- A computer or home server running DVR software with an Apple TV client.
Reception depends on location, antenna placement and signal conditions. Hardware, guide data or a service subscription may cost money even when the broadcast channel itself is free. Confirm the tuner’s current Apple TV and tvOS compatibility before buying.
Can you record Apple TV+ programs, purchases or rentals?
There is no documented native workflow for selecting an Apple Original and creating a DVR copy. Apple’s subscription programs are streamed through the service. Purchased and rented titles appear in the Library for permitted playback, redownload or streaming; that is not a recording of a broadcast. Some services permit offline downloads on particular devices, but an offline download is controlled by that service and device—not a freely managed Apple TV DVR file.

Can Apple TV pause or rewind live television?
Sometimes. This is time-shifting, not necessarily recording. An app may provide a temporary buffer after you join a live stream, full cloud DVR after you select Record, or no pause and rewind at all. Sports, news, blackouts and other rights restrictions can change the behavior. The app’s controls—not Apple TV hardware—determine what is possible.
What if the Record button is missing?
- The service may not offer DVR, or the program may be on-demand only.
- Your plan, account level or region may exclude recording.
- Channel, sports, blackout or event-rights rules may block recording.
- The app may need an update, or the Apple TV model or tvOS version may not be supported.
- The provider may have moved the command into a guide, show page or Library menu.
Check the provider’s help pages and try the provider’s own app rather than assuming Apple’s TV app should show a recording control.

For the simplest cable replacement
Use a live-TV service with cloud DVR included or available in your plan. You avoid a tuner and local storage, but pay a recurring fee and accept provider rules, internet dependence, channel rights and possible expiration.
For free local broadcast channels
Use an antenna plus a compatible OTA tuner/DVR. This avoids a full live-TV subscription, but reception, hardware setup and remote-viewing features vary.

For an existing cable or satellite subscriber
Use the provider’s DVR or cloud recording system. Apple TV may provide the provider’s app, while the provider’s box or backend remains the actual recorder.
For viewers who only need on-demand programs
Use the service’s catalog without recording. This is simplest, but episodes can be removed, delayed or moved to another subscription.
For advanced home control
Systems such as Channels DVR can combine compatible tuners and a home network, but they require more setup. An OTA product such as Tablo is aimed at antenna recording.
Quick Recap
Important limitations
- Cloud recordings usually depend on an active subscription and the provider’s continuing rights.
- “Unlimited DVR” does not mean permanent ownership or unrestricted playback.
- Series settings may record every episode, new episodes only or selected events.
- Sports can be affected by blackouts, regional rights and event overruns.
- Recordings may disappear after cancellation or when rights expire.
- Different Apple TV generations do not support every app or feature; Apple explicitly notes model and feature differences.
- Screen-recording protected streams may be blocked or produce a blank image. Use the provider’s DVR or permitted download feature instead of attempting to bypass copy protection.
