Can Spotify Streams Predict Grammy Winners? What Its Forecasts Actually Showed

Spotify has used listener streaming data to make informal forecasts about Grammy winners, but its projections were not official predictions and did not determine the awards. Streams can indicate which nominees are popular with Spotify listeners; the Recording Academy says Grammy nominees and winners are determined solely by creators—the peers of those being judged.

How Spotify used streams to forecast Grammy outcomes

For the 55th Grammy Awards in 2013, CBS reported that Spotify assembled listening data from the preceding year to forecast winners in major categories. Later Spotify projections made the method more explicit: rank nominees by total streams, then consider potential “dark horse” picks using a measure of how often tracks were streamed relative to how often they were shared.

These were entertainment-oriented projections based on audience behavior, not a permanent algorithm or an official Grammy feature. The documented examples span 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2018; they do not establish that Spotify currently publishes Grammy forecasts.

What the data measured

Total streams: a popularity signal

Spotify’s basic comparison was the total number of plays for nominees. Inc. described its 2015 rankings as based on total Spotify streams. That can show which nominees drew the largest audience on the platform, but it does not measure artistic quality or how Academy members will vote.

Virality: streams divided by shares

Fast Company and Inc. reported Spotify’s “virality” measure as streams divided by shares. The ratio was used to identify possible dark horses: songs that were being listened to and shared at a notable rate, even if they were not the highest-volume choice overall. It remains a measure of listener activity, not peer judgment.

The time window and category scope varied

The 2013 exercise used listener data from the prior year. In 2018, Spotify forecast winners in four top Latin Grammy categories using total plays from the previous month. Spotify cited 17 million streams in the last month for “X” in its Latin Recording of the Year coverage. That example belongs to the 2018 projection and should not be treated as a general threshold or a recurring figure.

How accurate were the Spotify Grammy predictions?

Wired reported that a stream-only Spotify exercise before the 2014 ceremony got 3 of 5 highlighted categories right. That is a limited result for those selected categories, not evidence of a reliable hit rate across all Grammy categories or years. The report concerns a particular forecast and should not be generalized into a claim that Spotify can consistently predict winners.

Streaming-based forecasts have a built-in constraint: they reflect listening on Spotify, so large audiences, release timing and platform reach can affect the signal. Adding shares can capture another aspect of audience momentum, but neither streams nor shares reveal how eligible creators will vote.

Do Grammy voters use Spotify streaming numbers?

The Recording Academy says the awards are decided by creator peers: “The GRAMMY is the only music award in which nominees and winners are determined solely by creators themselves: the peers of those being judged.” Spotify’s listener data may be used to make a forecast, but the available evidence does not establish that Grammy voters use those numbers to determine nominations or winners.

The distinction matters: a streaming forecast asks which nominee appears strongest by audience activity, while the Academy’s stated process asks creators to judge their peers. For the 55th Awards, the official winners included Gotye and Kimbra’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” for Record of the Year, Mumford & Sons’ Babel for Album of the Year, “We Are Young” for Song of the Year, and fun. for Best New Artist.

What “spoiling” the Grammys really means

Spotify’s projections could offer an early, data-driven guess about selected categories, particularly where listening totals and sharing suggested momentum. They did not reveal the Academy’s vote count or change the award process. Calling them a “spoiler” is best understood as a playful description of a forecast, not evidence that Spotify knew the winners in advance.
