Elle King said she chose her mother’s surname and built her music career independently because she wanted recognition for her own work, not simply as comedian Rob Schneider’s daughter. In a February 2023 interview with PEOPLE, she also described a once-distant relationship with her father that had since become loving, with what she called “awesome boundaries.”
Why did Elle King use her mother’s last name?
King was raised mainly in Ohio by her mother, London King, and stepfather—not in the Hollywood household people might assume from Schneider’s fame. She adopted her mother’s surname as her professional name and said she wanted to establish herself without borrowing money or relying on family status. In her 2023 PEOPLE interview, King put it plainly: “I didn’t want to be known as someone’s kid. I wanted to be my own person.”

She described the pressure of being associated with a famous parent as “an incredible amount of pressure to be in a shadow.” Her aim, she said, was to build a life and career she could regard as her own achievement.
Did Rob Schneider help launch her music career?
King’s account emphasizes independence, but it does not establish an objective measure of whether Schneider’s fame provided her with career access or visibility. In the 2023 interview, she said he “wasn’t even in my life” when she released her self-titled EP in 2012. She later said her father’s career was more of a deterrent than an influence when she was starting out, and that her mother supported her music. Yahoo’s August 2024 coverage summarized those comments from a podcast appearance.

King’s breakthrough was associated with “Ex’s & Oh’s,” released in 2014. Her 2023 album was Come Get Your Wife. Those milestones help explain why she has described wanting to be known for her own work, while not by themselves proving how much—or how little—her father’s name affected her opportunities.
Were Elle King and Rob Schneider estranged?
King said she and Schneider were not speaking around the time she released her 2012 EP. She has also spoken publicly about painful experiences growing up and criticized some of her father’s public views. August 2024 coverage of the Dumb Blonde podcast preview reported her allegations about being sent to “fat camp”; these are King’s recollections, not independently adjudicated findings. In the 2023 PEOPLE interview, King described a changed relationship: “My father and I have a beautiful and really wonderful, great loving relationship with awesome boundaries. I love my dad so much.” Her description presents closeness and boundaries as compatible, rather than suggesting that rebuilding their bond meant setting aside the distance or difficulties she had previously discussed.

The label raises separate questions: whether a famous parent brings visibility or access, whether an artist supports herself professionally, who raised the artist day to day, and what the family relationship is like. King’s comments address each from her perspective: she says she grew up primarily with her mother and stepfather, pursued her own professional identity, and wanted to support herself. She has also acknowledged the pressure of her father’s fame while describing their relationship as loving today.

Her account does not quantify how much Schneider’s name may have helped or hindered her career. It does show why she resisted being reduced to that connection: King wanted her work and independence to define her, not her parentage.
