The January 2010 report was a hoax designed to push curious readers toward a fake crash video. A bogus ActiveX or “Video ActiveX” codec offered to play the footage installed the Trojan detected as Troj/Dldr-DB when executed.
What the Johnny Depp crash story actually was
On January 25, 2010, Dark Reading described a fabricated internet report claiming that Depp had died in a French car accident. The story appears to have originated on a prank site made to resemble a CNN report, not from CNN or a legitimate news organization.
Messages and social-network posts, including forwarded messages and Twitter activity, sent people to pages that supposedly hosted video evidence. The pages used the celebrity’s name, a gruesome claim and an apparent news presentation to make the bait feel urgent and credible.
Graham Cluley’s contemporaneous Sophos-related account described the tactic plainly: “hackers have taken advantage of the situation – spreading malware on sites claiming to contain video footage of Johnny Depp’s car crash.”

How the fake video installed the Trojan
- A shock headline created urgency. A famous actor and an alleged fatal crash encouraged fast clicks and emotional sharing.
- Social sharing supplied apparent proof. Forwarded messages and posts made the rumor look widely confirmed, even though repetition was not independent reporting.
- A look-alike news page borrowed authority. The imitation CNN-style design could fool visitors who glanced at the page but did not inspect its actual web address.
- A playback problem prompted a download. The promised video supposedly required an ActiveX or Video ActiveX codec.
- The “codec” was the payload. Running the executable installed the Trojan identified by Sophos as Troj/Dldr-DB. Dark Reading reported that the download infected Windows computers.
A video does not normally require an unsolicited executable from a sensational link. The demand to install a codec was the decisive warning sign: the attackers converted curiosity about footage into permission to run a program.
Related email versions used the same celebrity bait
The campaign’s underlying idea also appeared in email. Symantec documented subject lines such as “Johnny Depp died” and other celebrity-fatal-crash claims. Messages used malicious HTML or ZIP attachments; one sample executable was detected as Trojan.Zbot. Norton’s August 24, 2010 release said these messages sought access to computers and personal information.

Those email samples were not necessarily the identical file as Troj/Dldr-DB. They show a reusable delivery pattern: a shocking celebrity claim, an attachment or link, and a request to open or run content that the recipient did not request.
Why the deception worked
- Emotion over verification: death reports encourage immediate reaction and sharing.
- Authority imitation: familiar branding can make a fraudulent page seem legitimate at a glance.
- Video as “evidence”: promising footage gives the rumor a concrete-looking proof point.
- Technical language: “codec” sounds like a routine media component, disguising an executable as a compatibility fix.
- Multiple delivery channels: social posts, fake news pages and email let the same theme reach people in different contexts.
How to check a celebrity death claim
- Pause before sharing. Treat an unexpected death or crash claim as unverified, regardless of how many people repeat it.
- Inspect the real domain. Look at the complete address in the browser. A page that resembles CNN but uses an unrelated or misspelled domain is not CNN reporting.
- Check independent reputable coverage. Look for confirmation from established news organizations or an official representative rather than relying on the original post.
- Reject “proof” downloads. Do not install a codec, player, browser extension or executable offered by a sensational page.
- Handle attachments as untrusted. Do not open unsolicited HTML or ZIP files merely because the subject line names a celebrity.
What to do if you downloaded or ran the codec
Downloading a file is less serious than executing it, but both warrant caution. If you ran the supposed codec, take these steps:

- Stop interacting with the file. Do not reopen it or follow additional prompts.
- Disconnect the computer from networks as appropriate. This can limit communication while you assess the system; avoid disrupting critical work without a safe plan.
- Update trusted security software from a legitimate source and run a full scan. Let the product quarantine or remove detections rather than manually deleting system files.
- Use a separate, clean device to change important passwords if compromise is suspected. Prioritize email, financial and administrator accounts, and enable multifactor authentication where available.
- Seek current professional help for a confirmed or persistent infection. Malware names and removal procedures change, and a 2010 detection label does not describe every modern threat.
If the computer shows continuing pop-ups, disabled security tools, unknown accounts, unusual network activity or repeated reinfection, stop using it for sensitive work and obtain incident-response assistance.

The practical lesson
A celebrity death rumor can be a malware delivery mechanism, not merely false gossip. Verify the domain, seek independent confirmation, and never execute an unsolicited “codec” or attachment to watch supposed breaking-news footage.
