When enforcement rolled out
The dates matter. Netflix’s company announcement, Update on Sharing, was dated May 23, 2023 and concerned emails to members sharing outside their household in Belgium. The announcement stated: “A Netflix account is for use by one household.”

TechCrunch reported U.S. rollout on May 23, 2023, including a paid extra-member option as then reported and a profile-transfer tool. Its July 19, 2023 report described a broader international expansion, while noting that extra-member availability differed between markets. Those reports describe a historical rollout; they are not current price or eligibility guidance.
Why the dark-web claim is not proven
The available evidence documents the policy, rollout dates and account-management tools. It does not provide a robust statistic showing that former account borrowers moved to dark-web streaming, nor does it establish that the ban caused such a shift. Historical subscriber figures from rollout coverage cannot be repurposed as piracy or dark-web usage data.

“Dark web” is also not a synonym for a cheaper streaming plan. Services distributing copyrighted films or series without permission may expose viewers to fraud, malware, stolen credentials and legal risk. The Netflix material cited here does not identify, measure or endorse any such service.

What to do if someone is still using your account
- Change the Netflix password to one that is unique to Netflix.
- Open the account’s device-management area and sign out devices you do not recognize or no longer use.
- Review messages and links carefully; phishing emails and fake login pages can imitate Netflix.
- Contact Netflix if suspicious activity continues or you cannot secure the account.
Netflix recommends unique passwords and notes that a password manager can make them easier to track.
