There is no public evidence that the Recording Academy formally ruled Bianca Censori’s February 2, 2025, GRAMMYs outfit a dress-code violation. Her transparent, nude-colored mini dress plainly pushed beyond conventional black-tie expectations and would have conflicted with the older CBS wardrobe guidance reported for televised performers. But the 2025 GRAMMYs described guest attire only broadly as “artistic black-tie,” and Kanye West and Censori were not kicked out because of the look.
What Bianca Censori wore at the 2025 GRAMMYs
Censori arrived on the red carpet with Kanye West wearing a long black fur coat. She removed the coat to reveal a nude-hued, transparent or nearly transparent mini dress. Photographs and video showed no visible bra or underwear beneath the garment, creating what many outlets described as a “nearly nude” or naked illusion.
The appearance took place at the 67th Annual GRAMMY Awards at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on Sunday, February 2, 2025. West was an actual nominee: the Recording Academy listed “Carnival,” credited to ¥$—Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign featuring Rich the Kid and Playboi Carti, in the Best Rap Song category.
The official GRAMMYs red-carpet fashion-cam video documented the appearance. Reports also connected the styling to the cover imagery for West and Ty Dolla $ign’s Vultures 1 album, with West in black and Censori in a highly revealing outfit. That connection is best treated as an interpretation or reported theory—not as confirmed intent from West, Censori, or the ceremony’s producers.

The short answer: against the spirit of the dress code, but not publicly declared a violation
The controversy becomes clearer when three different standards are separated:
| Question | Best-supported answer |
|---|---|
| Did the outfit fit ordinary black-tie expectations? | No. It was at the extreme edge of—and arguably inconsistent with—conventional formalwear. |
| Did it conflict with the older CBS wardrobe guidance for televised talent? | Likely yes, if that guidance were applied to the look. But the documented advisory was from 2013, not a verified 2025 rule for every red-carpet guest. |
| Did the Recording Academy publicly declare a 2025 dress-code violation? | No such public ruling or enforcement statement was identified. |
| Were West and Censori expelled because of the outfit? | No. PEOPLE reported that they were not kicked out; West left after the red-carpet appearance. |
What “artistic black-tie” meant in 2025
Raj Kapoor, an executive producer of the 2025 ceremony, described guest attire as “artistic black-tie” in comments reported by Us Weekly. He also explained that the music industry interpreted the phrase more flexibly than a traditional formal event would.
That wording matters. “Artistic black-tie” sounds like a dress-code expectation, but it is not a published technical standard specifying how much skin may be shown, how transparent fabric can be, or what undergarments are required. Kapoor further distinguished between people attending the event and performers appearing on the televised program, saying the production had to follow broadcast standards for those who performed while directing questions about attendees and nominees to the Recording Academy.
In other words, the phrase established a broad fashion norm rather than a clearly enforceable, garment-by-garment rule. Censori’s outfit could reasonably be criticized as violating the spirit of artistic black-tie without there being a formal rule that officials could publicly cite and enforce.

The Academy’s public rules and guidelines focus mainly on award eligibility, submissions, voting, and awards administration. Its public ticket policy addresses ticket use, ownership, transfers, invited guests, and circumstances in which a person may be ejected for violating ticket policies. It does not set out a detailed clothing policy for red-carpet guests.

The GRAMMYs have also historically encouraged experimentation. A 2017 GRAMMY.com fashion feature portrayed the ceremony as a place where artists push fashion boundaries and said there was no occasion-appropriate dress code for the step-and-repeat. That article is useful context for the event’s fashion culture, but it predates the 2025 ceremony and should not be treated as a binding current policy.
Consequently, the available public material does not support the stronger claim that the Academy had a clearly posted 2025 rule banning Censori’s look—or that it officially found her in violation of one.
How the CBS wardrobe advisory fits into the story
Much of the confusion comes from a wardrobe memo issued before the 2013 GRAMMYs. A CBS News/AP report described CBS Program Practices guidance for talent appearing on camera. The advisory asked that breasts and buttocks be adequately covered, warned against thong-type costumes, discouraged sheer see-through clothing that could expose nipples, and required adequate coverage of the genital region. ABC News reported similar details.
Under those reported standards, Censori’s transparent outfit would appear difficult to reconcile with the advisory’s requirements. However, three limitations prevent it from answering the 2025 question by itself:
- It was a 2013 advisory. The research does not establish that the memo remained in force unchanged in 2025.
- It concerned televised talent. Kapoor’s 2025 comments distinguished performers from attendees and nominees.
- The red carpet and the main show are not identical. The existence of official red-carpet footage does not prove that CBS applied the same wardrobe standards to every person photographed there as it would to a performer during the broadcast.
The most accurate conclusion is therefore that the look would likely have conflicted with the older CBS on-camera guidance, but that guidance does not prove a current, universally applicable 2025 dress-code violation.

Were Kanye West and Bianca Censori kicked out?
No. A viral claim said the couple had been escorted from the ceremony after arriving uninvited or after Censori revealed the outfit. Later reporting contradicted that version.
West was a legitimate nominee for “Carnival,” as shown in the Academy’s official Best Rap Song nominee materials. PEOPLE confirmed that the pair walked the red carpet and were not kicked out. West left in his car shortly afterward. They did not remain as seated attendees for the main ceremony, but that fact is not evidence that they had been expelled for Censori’s clothing.

Reporting also indicated that they were present for the red carpet and that Kapoor was uncertain whether West attended the pre-telecast ceremony. That uncertainty should not be converted into the claim that the couple had no legitimate connection to the event.
Was the outfit illegal?
There is no evidence in the available reporting of a charge, prosecution, or official law-enforcement finding arising from the appearance. It would be inaccurate to state that Censori committed indecent exposure simply because the dress was transparent or provocative.
California Penal Code section 314 addresses willful and lewd exposure of a person’s body or private parts in a public place, or in circumstances where other people are present who may be offended or annoyed. The statute is available through the California Legislative Information website.

A transparent fashion garment and a provocative pose do not automatically establish every element of that offense. The defensible statement is that the look prompted online speculation about the law, not that it was proven illegal.
What is actually known about the garment?
The reliable descriptions identify a nude-colored, fully or nearly fully sheer mini dress worn without visible underwear or a bra, initially concealed by a black fur coat. Some coverage called it “custom couture” or a custom-made piece, but the exact designer, official name, construction, retail stock number, and availability have not been reliably established in the source material.
It should not be identified as a commercially available Yeezy product without a later primary-source confirmation. A generic sheer nude mesh dress might resemble the visual effect, but it would be a substitute—not the garment Censori wore—and presenting it as a shopping recommendation would blur an important distinction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the viral explanation was misleading
The online story combined several separate facts: an unusually revealing outfit, a flexible phrase about “artistic black-tie,” an older CBS wardrobe memo, and the couple’s early departure. Those facts were then compressed into the unsupported claim that the GRAMMYs removed them for violating the dress code.
The documented sequence is more restrained:
- West and Censori appeared on the GRAMMYs red carpet.
- Censori removed a long black coat and revealed the transparent nude-hued dress.
- The appearance attracted extensive attention and commentary.
- The pair left shortly afterward.
- Later reporting confirmed that they were not kicked out because of the outfit.
That chronology supports a fashion controversy, not a documented disciplinary action.

Final verdict
Bianca Censori’s nearly nude 2025 GRAMMYs look likely violated the spirit of the event’s “artistic black-tie” expectation, and it would have conflicted with the older CBS wardrobe advisory if that performer-focused guidance applied. But no public Recording Academy ruling formally declared the outfit a 2025 dress-code violation.
The claim that Censori and Kanye West were kicked out is false or, at minimum, unsupported by the available evidence. They attended the red-carpet portion, West was a legitimate nominee, and they left without a publicly documented expulsion.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did Bianca Censori break the GRAMMYs dress code?
No formal 2025 violation was publicly announced. Her outfit was plainly outside conventional black-tie norms and arguably against the spirit of “artistic black-tie,” but the Recording Academy did not publicly issue a ruling declaring it a breach.
Were Bianca Censori and Kanye West kicked out of the 2025 GRAMMYs?
No. PEOPLE reported that they were not kicked out. West was a Best Rap Song nominee for “Carnival,” and the pair left after appearing on the red carpet.

The available evidence does not establish that. California’s indecent-exposure law requires specific elements, and there was no reported charge, prosecution, or official law-enforcement determination connected to the GRAMMYs appearance.
Was Censori’s outfit banned by CBS in 2025?
That claim goes beyond the evidence. CBS issued a wardrobe advisory for on-camera talent before the 2013 GRAMMYs, but the research does not show that the same memo remained unchanged in 2025 or applied to every red-carpet guest.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Censori’s outfit was an extreme challenge to the GRAMMYs’ broad “artistic black-tie” expectation, but there is no public evidence of a formal 2025 dress-code ruling—and the couple was not kicked out.
