Catherine, Princess of Wales, said in January 2025 that her cancer was in remission after undergoing preventative chemotherapy following abdominal surgery. She announced the diagnosis in March 2024, said in September 2024 that she had completed chemotherapy, and has since made a phased return to public duties. The Royal Family has not disclosed her cancer type, stage, chemotherapy drugs, or detailed prognosis.
That means the original description that she “is undergoing chemo” is no longer accurate as a current-status statement. The confirmed record is that she underwent treatment in 2024 and later said she was in remission while continuing her recovery.
What happened to Catherine, Princess of Wales?
Catherine underwent planned abdominal surgery at The London Clinic on January 16, 2024. Kensington Palace said the operation was successful and that she was expected to remain in hospital for 10 to 14 days, with a return to public duties unlikely before Easter. At that point, the palace did not disclose the condition that required surgery.
After the operation, tests found cancer. In a video statement released on March 22, 2024, Catherine said that her medical team had advised a course of preventative chemotherapy and that she was in the early stages of treatment. She did not identify the type or stage of cancer.

The wording matters. “Preventative chemotherapy” describes treatment intended to reduce the risk of cancer returning or to address cancer cells after surgery; it does not, by itself, establish a specific diagnosis, stage, regimen, or prognosis.

Is Catherine still undergoing chemotherapy?
There is no confirmed public statement in the supplied official record that Catherine is currently receiving chemotherapy. She said on September 9, 2024, that she had completed the course. In January 2025, she said her cancer was in remission and that she remained focused on recovery.
Accordingly, the accurate wording is: Catherine underwent preventative chemotherapy in 2024 and later said her cancer was in remission. It would be inaccurate to state as a current fact that she is still undergoing chemotherapy unless a newer authoritative statement establishes that.
What does “in remission” mean?
“In remission” is not the same as a guarantee that cancer has been cured or can never return. In this case, the statement should be attributed to Catherine: she said that her cancer was in remission during her January 14, 2025 visit to the Royal Marsden.

Her earlier September statement also made clear that recovery was continuing. Public appearances, charitable work, or an ability to undertake a demanding event cannot reveal the details of an individual’s medical status, and they should not be used to draw conclusions about recurrence risk or treatment success beyond what she and her medical team have publicly said.

What has not been disclosed?
Catherine and the palace have not publicly identified:
- the type of cancer;
- the stage or extent of the disease;
- the precise abdominal operation;
- the chemotherapy drugs, doses, or treatment protocol;
- the exact duration of chemotherapy beyond the broad dates she provided; or
- whether she received additional treatment after chemotherapy.
It is not responsible to infer a cancer type from the fact that the surgery involved the abdomen. Nor does the phrase “preventative chemotherapy” identify a particular cancer or tell readers what treatment another patient should expect. Treatment decisions depend on pathology, imaging, surgical findings, and other clinical information that has not been made public.
Why the diagnosis was announced after surgery
The January announcement concerned the surgery and recovery period, while the March announcement followed post-operative testing. Catherine explained in March that cancer had been found after the operation and that her medical team had recommended chemotherapy.

Her return to public life
Catherine’s first major public appearance after the diagnosis was Trooping the Colour on June 15, 2024. That appearance was significant as a public event, but it did not indicate that she had finished treatment. She subsequently said that chemotherapy was complete in September.

In 2025 and 2026, official Royal Household records documented a phased return to public-facing work. Her connection with the Royal Marsden also became a public part of her post-treatment work: she and William became joint patrons of the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, and the official record identifies her 2026 National Three Peaks Challenge as supporting the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.
Readers who want to support cancer research and patient care can consult the Royal Family’s official information about the Royal Marsden connection and verify current charitable arrangements directly before donating. Catherine’s disclosure may help explain why cancer treatment and recovery have become part of her public work, but it is not a substitute for medical advice. Anyone affected by cancer should seek individualized information from an oncology team or a recognized cancer-information organization rather than attempting to compare an undisclosed royal medical history with their own.
