Possibly—but there is no universal winner. If you already own the MacBook Air, compare its measured electricity use during playback with the cloud VM’s full bill for the same hours. The result depends on the laptop’s actual power draw, your electricity tariff, the VM’s region and configuration, and any storage or network charges. A low hourly compute price alone does not show that a VM can reliably play a YouTube playlist.
How to compare the two costs fairly
Set the same runtime for both options, such as the number of hours you actually plan to play the playlist. Treat the Mac as already purchased; this comparison covers operating cost, not the laptop’s purchase price, depreciation, or maintenance.
| Option | What to calculate | What can change the result |
|---|---|---|
| Already-owned MacBook Air | Measured average wall power × playback hours × local electricity tariff | Model and condition, screen brightness, browser, playback resolution, external display, and local electricity price |
| Cloud VM | Applicable VM rate × billed runtime, plus storage, network transfer, and other selected resources | Provider, region, operating system, disk, IP/network use, billing option, discounts, and account eligibility |
Measure the Mac instead of guessing
Use a plug-in electricity monitor at the wall while the playlist is playing, with the brightness, browser, network connection, and playback settings you intend to use. A laptop’s power adapter rating is not its average draw, and measurements from a newer MacBook Air are not a reliable substitute for an older model.
Apple’s 2019 environmental report lists idle, display-on measurements of 3.74 W, 3.81 W, and 4.24 W for its tested 13-inch MacBook Air under the report’s conditions. These figures are historical and model-specific; they are not measurements of video playback or of every older Air. Apple’s environmental report is useful as an example of a defined measurement, not as your laptop’s streaming estimate.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Convert measured power into an electricity cost
Use average watts, elapsed hours, and your tariff in currency per kilowatt-hour:
cost = watts / 1000 × hours × tariff
For example, enter your own measured wattage, intended playback hours, and electricity rate. Include charging or standby overhead only if you have measured it or otherwise have a sound basis for estimating it.

Estimate the VM’s full bill
Cloud providers publish compute rates, but compute is only one possible part of the bill. As displayed on Google Cloud’s pricing page on 2026-10-03, an e2-micro was listed at $0.008376428 per hour under the page’s default on-demand context. AWS’s T3 page on that date listed t3.nano at $0.0052 per hour and t3.micro at $0.0104 per hour. These are pricing-page examples, not all-in quotes or universal rates; region and configuration matter.
- Choose the exact region, operating system, machine type, disk, and network options you would use.
- Multiply the applicable rate by the VM’s billed runtime. AWS says instance charges accrue from launch until stop or termination; check the selected billing rules rather than assuming that an idle or stopped resource has no charges.
- Add storage, data transfer, IP/network use, and any other selected resources. Google and AWS identify additional pricing areas that can affect the total.
- Check whether any discount or free quota actually applies to your account and workload. Google documents sustained-use discounts for eligible resources and an e2-micro Always Free quota subject to program conditions; eligibility should be verified for the account and region.
Use the provider’s current calculator and pricing details for your actual region and setup. For reference, see Google Cloud Compute pricing, Google Cloud Free Program details, AWS EC2 On-Demand pricing, and AWS T3 instances. Rates and offer terms can change.

Cost is not proof that the VM can play the playlist
The cited pricing information does not establish that an example low-cost VM has enough resources or a suitable graphical setup for continuous browser playback. Before relying on a VM, verify that its selected configuration and operating system can run the playback method you need, and test the playlist under those conditions. A cheap hourly rate is not useful if the chosen setup cannot perform the task reliably.
Decide using your own break-even inputs
- Measure the Mac’s average wall power during representative playlist playback.
- Calculate its electricity cost for the intended hours using your local tariff.
- Configure a VM estimate for the same hours and include compute, storage, network, and other applicable charges.
- Separately verify that the VM can play the playlist as required; do not infer feasibility from its price.
- Compare the totals, keeping any purchase, depreciation, maintenance, or convenience considerations separate from electricity and cloud charges.
The answer can change with any of these inputs: Mac model and battery condition, display use, playback quality, local tariff, VM provider and region, and storage or network configuration. Without them, a precise break-even figure would be misleading.
