Yes—a Raspberry Pi can act as a small Linux-based encoder that sends a prerecorded retail video to YouTube Live. The basic workflow is to prepare a rights-cleared video, configure an encoder to repeat it and send it to YouTube with your stream URL and key, then check the preview before going live. A Raspberry Pi community project describes an automated YouTube streaming setup using FFmpeg and systemd, but the available information does not establish a tested Pi model or command for this exact retail-loop use.
Before you set up the Pi
Make sure the channel can livestream
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and streamers must be at least 16. If live streaming has not been enabled on the channel before, activation can take up to 24 hours. Check eligibility and enable live streaming before scheduling a retail loop. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
Clear the rights to everything in the loop
You need the rights to use all material in the video, not only the main footage: music, product imagery, logos, graphics, voiceovers, and other included content count too. YouTube’s livestream terms require providers to have the rights needed for worldwide exploitation on Google services. Review the YouTube Terms of Service and the Community Guidelines before streaming.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. As YouTube Help states, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A match can result in a warning, a placeholder replacing the stream, interruption, or termination if the material remains. A license alone may not prevent an interruption if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. If relevant, arrange allowlisting with the rights owner in advance. See YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams.

Understand the trade-off of a repetitive loop
Being permitted to send a prerecorded file as a livestream is not the same as qualifying for monetization. YouTube’s monetization policy expects original, authentic content and says repetitive material with minimal variation or value may be ineligible. A retail loop can therefore create monetization risk; the policy does not state that every prerecorded video sent through an encoder is categorically prohibited. Live-stream ads are also not guaranteed: YouTube’s ad systems decide whether individual ad slots serve based on several factors. See YouTube channel monetization policies and YouTube Help: Ad formats on live streams.
Prepare the Raspberry Pi and video
The Pi’s role is to run an encoder that reads the video file, repeats it, and sends the resulting audio/video stream to YouTube. The Raspberry Pi-specific reference located for this workflow is a community project description involving FFmpeg and systemd, not a test report. It does not validate a particular board, operating-system build, or performance level for a retail loop. Keep the setup model-neutral, and test your own hardware with the intended file and settings before relying on it. Raspberry Pi streamer project.

- Put the finished, rights-cleared video on storage accessible to the Pi.
- Check that the file has the audio and video you intend viewers to hear and see throughout the loop.
- Use a reliable network connection and measure upload capacity. YouTube recommends choosing quality to fit a reliable upload bitrate, testing before going live, and monitoring stream health.
- Plan how you will restart the encoder if the Pi, network, or process stops. No source establishes a Pi configuration as a guaranteed 24/7 system.
Create the YouTube stream and get its connection details
- Open YouTube Studio and Live Control Room. Create a stream or select the scheduled stream you intend to use.
- Copy the server URL and stream key. Use the values shown for that stream in the encoder. YouTube also supports an encoder’s direct YouTube integration where available. Its documented workflow is to connect the encoder, start sending, check the preview, and then click Go live. See YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
- Protect the key. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it in a script, screenshot, or public repository. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before the next broadcast.
Configure and test the encoder
Use an encoder on the Pi that can read the file, repeat playback, and publish to YouTube. FFmpeg is one possible software route, and a Raspberry Pi project describes an automated workflow built around FFmpeg and systemd. The available sources do not supply a tested command for this specific retail-loop use, so any command you adapt must be validated on your Pi rather than treated as a drop-in recipe.
Use YouTube’s ingest recommendations
- Prefer RTMPS when supported. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over an SSL connection and recommends it for secure ingest.
- Use supported codecs and constant bitrate. Follow YouTube’s current encoder guidance for compatible codecs and encoder settings rather than assuming every format supported by a Pi build is accepted by YouTube.
- Set keyframes deliberately. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed 4 seconds.
- Match quality to actual upload capacity. Set resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to what the connection can sustain reliably; run a speed test and leave room for network variation.
- Test the whole loop. Confirm representative motion, legible product text, audio levels, and that playback returns cleanly to the start. Check YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators before making the broadcast public.
These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not proof that a particular Pi model can encode every listed resolution, frame rate, codec, or bitrate. See YouTube Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Go live, monitor, and stop cleanly
- Start the encoder so it begins sending the looping file to YouTube.
- Wait for the preview in Live Control Room and confirm the picture and sound are correct.
- Click Go live in Live Control Room when the preview is healthy.
- Monitor stream health and the broadcast periodically, especially during the first full loop and after any network or power interruption.
- To end the broadcast, stop the encoder’s outgoing content and end the stream in Studio as applicable. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume automatic archiving for longer sessions.
Troubleshooting common problems
YouTube does not show a preview
- Check that the encoder is running and is sending to the server URL associated with the selected stream.
- Verify that the stream key is correct and has not been replaced or exposed.
- Confirm the channel is enabled for live streaming; first-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
The preview buffers or stream health is poor
- Lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate until the stream fits reliable upload capacity.
- Run a speed test and check the network connection for interruptions.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health indicators and encoder guidance; do not assume that a board can sustain a setting merely because it is listed by YouTube.
The stream is interrupted after starting
- Check for a network outage, encoder process exit, Pi power issue, or incorrect stream settings.
- Look for YouTube copyright notices. If third-party content is matched, secure the necessary rights and ask the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting where appropriate.
- Restart the encoder only after correcting the cause, then verify the new preview before going live again.
The stream runs, but monetization is limited or unavailable
Review whether the loop is repetitive with minimal variation or value and whether every included element is eligible for use. Monetization eligibility and live-stream permission are separate questions; neither a successful preview nor a live broadcast guarantees ads or monetization.
