A ten-metre-wide back garden in Bristol is the setting for episode two of the BBC’s 2026 wildlife series Secret Garden, narrated by Sir David Attenborough. The programme follows foxes, hedgehogs, blue tits, frogs and other wildlife using Louise Vergette’s urban plot and the gardens linked to it. Reported to have aired on 5 April 2026, the episode shows how a small, ordinary garden can become one working part of a much larger habitat.
What is the David Attenborough Bristol garden documentary?
The Bristol story appears in the second episode of Secret Garden, a BBC wildlife series narrated by Sir David Attenborough. Apple TV’s episode listing describes a small urban garden where foxes, hedgehogs, blue tits and frogs live alongside traffic and surrounding streets. The setting belongs to Louise Vergette, whose wildlife-friendly changes turned a compact domestic space into a place used by several species.
Series producer Bill Markham said the aim was to make familiar wildlife “relatable and meaningful”. That focus matters in Bristol: the film does not depend on a remote reserve, but on animals moving through gardens that many viewers recognise.
What animals were filmed in Louise Vergette’s garden?
The cameras recorded a community of animals using different parts of the plot and the connected gardens around it.

- Foxes: Adult foxes used the garden as part of a wider territory, while fox cubs were filmed exploring neighbouring gardens.
- Hedgehogs: The animals travelled through openings between gardens, known as hedgehog highways.
- Frogs and toads: A pond supported adults, tadpoles and the wider food web around the water.
- Dragonflies: The pond provided habitat for these insects as well as amphibians.
- Blue tits: Birds competed for food and nested in the garden.
- Bees: A secondary episode guide, the Attenborough Nature Companion, says around 50 bee species visited the plot. That figure is an episode-guide estimate rather than an independently measured national statistic.
The reported fox-territory observations also come from the episode coverage and guide material. They show why the garden should be understood as one stop in an animal’s route, not as a self-contained enclosure.
How did the crew film fox cubs in such a small garden?
Conventional filming was unusually difficult because the garden is only about ten metres across and is surrounded by streets and traffic. A cinematographer concealed himself in a patio filming hide, but foxes and hedgehogs still detected the crew. As a result, remote cameras and camera traps supplied a larger-than-usual share of the footage.
That approach lets cameras remain in position after people have left, reducing the chance that wary animals abandon a route or change their behaviour. Equipment still has to be placed carefully: a camera should not block a gap, feeding area or path that animals are using.

How did Louise Vergette make the garden attractive to wildlife?
Vergette built the pond before starting renovation work. She later worked with neighbours to open hedgehog highways between gardens. Her account links the changes with visible results: frogs and toads appeared after the pond was constructed, and hedgehogs returned after the gaps were opened.
The story illustrates two different interventions. Water creates breeding and feeding habitat in the garden itself; connected boundaries allow animals to move through a wider landscape. Neither requires a large property, but both depend on safe design and ongoing care.
What is a hedgehog highway and how do I make one?
A hedgehog highway is a small opening that lets hedgehogs pass from one garden to the next instead of being stopped by continuous fencing or walls. In practice, neighbours coordinate gaps along adjoining boundaries so an animal can travel through several plots.

- Speak with adjoining gardeners. A single opening is more useful when neighbouring gardens provide matching routes.
- Create a ground-level passage. Leave or cut a gap at the base of a fence or gate that a hedgehog can use without climbing.
- Keep the route clear. Do not stack materials, install sharp edging or place equipment across the opening.
- Make the wider garden safe. Check ponds, netting, drains and lawn equipment for hazards before leaving animals to move through.
The Bristol example suggests that connectivity can bring hedgehogs back, but it does not guarantee visits in every garden. Food, shelter, traffic and neighbouring access all affect whether a route is used.
What can I do to attract frogs and hedgehogs to my garden?
A pond is the clearest feature demonstrated in the Bristol garden. It can support frogs, tadpoles, toads, dragonflies and other pond life, provided it has safe edges and is maintained without pesticides entering the water. For land-based wildlife, the programme’s practical advice is to leave some lawn long, plant native trees, make compost and avoid pesticides.
- Provide water: Add a pond where it can remain stable and include an easy way for animals to get out.
- Leave structure: Retain areas of longer grass and natural cover rather than making every surface closely cut.
- Plant native trees: Choose species suited to the local site and allow room for mature growth.
- Compost garden material: Compost creates habitat as well as reducing waste.
- Remove chemical pressure: Avoid pesticides that can harm insects or contaminate food and water sources.
- Link boundaries: Coordinate hedgehog highways with neighbours.
These measures work together: insects and plants support birds and amphibians, while connected, undisturbed routes help mammals move between feeding and sheltering places.

Why does one Bristol garden matter for conservation?
Markham said around 80% of people have access to a garden. He also cited an estimated 25 million UK gardens, together covering more land than all national nature reserves combined. Those are broad figures quoted in 2026 coverage, not measurements of Vergette’s individual plot, but they explain the programme’s larger argument: many small spaces can form a substantial network when they are managed with wildlife in mind.
Attenborough described Vergette’s garden as “a haven for wildlife”, adding that even its owner did not know “the half of what goes on here”. The footage makes that hidden activity visible while showing that urban wildlife depends on routes and resources spread across multiple properties.

The Bristol garden is not presented as a miniature nature reserve or a guaranteed recipe for attracting every species. It is evidence that modest changes—especially a pond, pesticide-free planting, longer grass and connected boundaries—can make a city garden more useful to wildlife. Remote cameras reveal the result because animals often avoid people, but the habitat itself is created by everyday decisions made before filming begins.

Frequently Asked Questions
When did the Bristol episode of Secret Garden air?
The episode was reported as airing on 5 April 2026. Listings identify it as episode two of the BBC series narrated by Sir David Attenborough.
Is Louise Vergette’s garden open to the public?
The coverage identifies it as a private urban garden in Bristol and does not establish any public visiting arrangement. Viewers should not treat the filming location as an attraction or attempt to visit.
Why did the filmmakers use camera traps instead of filming from nearby?
Foxes and hedgehogs detected a cinematographer even when he was concealed in a patio hide. Remote cameras could remain in place without a person nearby, reducing disturbance and improving the chance of recording natural behaviour.
Do hedgehog highways need permission from the council?
The episode coverage describes openings made between neighbouring private gardens, not a council scheme. Before altering a boundary, check ownership, tenancy rules and any local restrictions, and agree the design with the adjoining property owner.
