South Africa’s national blood stocks were reported at 4.2 days of cover when the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) launched its appeal around the documentary Why Blood Matters. SANBS’s operating benchmark is five days for every blood group, so the reported level was below the reserve it says is needed to keep patients supplied. The figure is a dated snapshot, not a live reading; check SANBS’s stock information before treating it as current.
The practical response is straightforward: if you meet SANBS’s eligibility rules, use its official donor-centre or mobile-drive information and arrange a donation as soon as possible. SANBS says it aims to collect about 3,500 units each day, while red blood cells last up to 42 days, making a steady stream of donors essential.
Why did South Africa’s blood stocks fall to 4.2 days?
The 4.2-day figure means SANBS reported enough stock for roughly 4.2 days of expected use at the time of the documentary appeal. SANBS says it works toward five days of cover for each blood group, so the reported level was 0.8 days below that operating benchmark. It does not, by itself, identify one cause for the shortfall; blood availability changes as donations, hospital demand, testing and distribution move through the system.

Red blood cells can be stored for up to 42 days, so donations cannot be treated as a one-time fix: hospitals need replenishment throughout the year. The 4.2-day number should therefore be read with its date and source attached, rather than presented as a live national total after publication.

Because reserves are tracked by blood group, an overall figure does not show whether every group has the same level of cover. Anyone deciding whether to donate should consult SANBS’s current stock information and local collection arrangements.
What is SANBS’s Why Blood Matters documentary about?
Why Blood Matters follows a donated unit through the work required before it reaches a patient: collection, laboratory testing, processing, storage and distribution. It connects that chain to transfusions used after accidents and other emergencies, as well as during cancer treatment, surgery, transplant care and prolonged medical treatment.
The documentary premiered in Johannesburg on 8 October 2026. Coverage listed a SABC 2 broadcast on Sunday, 11 October, with a repeat on Friday, 16 October at 13:30. Television schedules can change, and those dates have passed, so viewers should check current SANBS or broadcaster announcements for any later screening or availability.

Whose experiences are shown in the film?
The film puts patients, donors and the people who handle blood between donation and transfusion in the same story.
- Marie Bontjes was diagnosed with anaemia at one year old, illustrating how transfusion can be part of a patient’s life from early childhood.
- Meena Singh required multiple units during a liver transplant and describes transfusion as giving her an opportunity at life.
- Gregory Naidoo’s account shows how an emergency can arise without warning.
- Mario Ferreira says he has donated since age 19.
- Boitumelo Masiu began donating while still at school.
- Siyabonga Malinga presents donation as a continuing community commitment.
Together, the accounts show that a blood service depends on more than a collection chair: donors, recipients, clinicians, laboratory personnel and logistics teams all affect whether a safe unit is available when needed.
Why does SANBS say one donation can matter to several patients?
SANBS says a donation may be separated into red blood cells, plasma and platelets. Those components can then be given to different patients, which is why the service says one donation can help up to three lives. The exact use depends on clinical need and the components produced during processing.

“We often talk about blood in terms of units, blood groups, stock levels and statistics, but behind every unit is a human story,” SANBS marketing and branding manager Simphiwe Cele said in the documentary coverage.

Cele also said that blood cannot be manufactured and cannot be taken for granted; ordinary South Africans’ decisions to donate are what allow SANBS to provide it when patients need it. Donor Mario Ferreira summed up the personal motivation more simply: “Knowing that I can save a life makes me happy.”

Where can you donate: a fixed centre or a mobile drive?
SANBS operates permanent donor centres and mobile blood drives. Both use eligibility screening, but the practical details differ, so check the listing for the specific venue.

What happens after you give blood?
- Collection: SANBS takes the voluntary donation at a fixed centre or mobile drive.
- Testing: The sample and donation undergo laboratory checks so the service can establish whether the blood is safe for use.
- Processing: The donation can be separated into red blood cells, plasma and platelets.
- Storage: Components are stored under the conditions required for their use; SANBS says red blood cells last up to 42 days.
- Distribution: Units and components are sent where hospitals and patients need them.
This sequence explains why a donor’s appointment is only the first part of the supply chain and why regular donations are needed even when a previous appeal has eased.
What should an eligible reader do now?
Check SANBS’s current stock information, find a nearby donor centre or scheduled mobile drive, and confirm that the site is operating before you travel. SANBS’s published contact number in the documentary coverage is 0800 11 90 31. If you are unsure about eligibility, ask SANBS directly rather than relying on an old rule or a past screening result.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I watch Why Blood Matters after the listed television broadcasts?
The reported premiere and SABC 2 repeat are specific broadcast slots, and no on-demand release is established here. Check current announcements from SANBS or the broadcaster for any later screening, streaming or community showing.
How can I check whether a nearby mobile blood drive is still running?
Use SANBS’s official mobile-drive listing and confirm the venue, date and operating window before leaving home. A quick call to 0800 11 90 31 can help resolve a change that has not yet appeared in a listing.
What if SANBS defers me when I arrive?
Follow the screening team’s advice and ask when, or under what conditions, you may next be eligible. Deferral rules can change with health, medication, travel and other factors, so do not assume a previous clearance still applies.
Does the 4.2-day figure apply to every blood group equally?
No single overall figure establishes the reserve for each group. SANBS’s five-day operating benchmark is stated separately for every blood group, so current group-level information is the useful reference when planning a donation.
