Biermann, Jens Meurer’s 2026 documentary about singer-songwriter and poet Wolf Biermann, uses one German artist’s confrontation with dictatorship to ask how people should respond to power now. The 120-minute film combines music, new conversations, performances and archival material, including previously unpublished footage and a 2025 concert. Meurer says Biermann’s refusal to be silenced—and his use of humor against authority—makes the story especially urgent in the Trump era, while insisting that the film is not a claim that the GDR and contemporary American politics are identical.
What is the Biermann documentary about?
Biermann is a German documentary feature directed by Jens Meurer and centered on Wolf Biermann, the 90-year-old singer, songwriter and poet whose criticism of East Germany made him one of the country’s most consequential political artists. Why does Jens Meurer call it a film for the Trump era?
Meurer’s argument is thematic, not a claim that the German Democratic Republic and present-day United States are the same political system. He sees Biermann as an example of how to confront power, defend free expression and retain a sense of humor when intimidation is the point.
In the trade interview about the film, Meurer asks, “If I look at Trump, I think, ‘Where’s Charlie Chaplin!?’” The reference points to Chaplin’s use of satire against authoritarian spectacle. Meurer believes mockery can puncture fear and restore a sense of agency to people who feel overwhelmed by political power.
“We should not be cowed,” he says. “We should be making fun of these people, and that was Biermann’s biggest secret weapon – he attacked the dictatorship that he lived under with passion and humor.” His appeal is practical as well as philosophical: “Get fucking involved in your own life and in your own matters.”
The film therefore treats humor as a form of resistance rather than a decorative personality trait. Biermann’s songs, arguments and public persona become a test of whether dissent can remain energetic instead of turning into resignation.

Who was Wolf Biermann, and why was he expelled from East Germany?
Biermann moved to East Germany and became a prominent critic of the GDR while living under its system. Authorities banned him from performing and publishing for 12 years, but he continued to perform privately; secretly recorded material circulated in the West.
The decisive break came at his concert in Cologne’s Sports Hall on 13 November 1976. About 7,500 people attended. Three days later, the SED Politburo decided to expel Biermann from the GDR. The expulsion turned a long-running dispute over censorship into an international symbol of the limits the state placed on artists and intellectuals.
Biermann uses that episode as a historical spine without reducing the subject to a single act of political martyrdom. The film follows the consequences for Biermann’s career, family and public identity, and asks what it means to keep speaking after a state has tried to remove your audience.
What does the film’s “five Germanys” structure mean?
Meurer frames Biermann’s life as a passage through five versions of Germany: a Nazi-era childhood, postwar occupied Germany, West Germany, East Germany and reunified Germany. This structure lets the documentary treat national history as lived experience rather than background information.

Each period changes the meaning of Biermann’s songs and political choices. The result is a portrait of a man who has had to renegotiate his country, language and audience repeatedly, rather than a static retrospective about a figure fixed in the Cold War.
Does the documentary present Biermann as a hero?
Not entirely. Meurer acknowledges that Biermann can be abrasive and difficult, which keeps the film from becoming an uncomplicated saint’s portrait. Actor Armin Mueller-Stahl calls him a “visible egomaniac” in the interview, a judgment Meurer does not simply dismiss.
At the same time, Meurer emphasizes Biermann’s authenticity and his accessibility away from the stage. “I believe not that he constantly stages himself. He is as he is,” he says in a German-language interview with Vorwärts. The tension between conviction and ego is part of the film’s subject: public resistance can require a forceful personality, but that personality can also alienate people around it.
How was Biermann made?
Meurer says he filmed Biermann over two years. A separate Vorwärts interview describes three years of camera accompaniment, so the duration depends on whether one counts the principal filming period or the broader period of access. The finished film combines that contemporary material with historical recordings rather than relying on narration alone.

The screenplay and concept are credited to Dirk Kämper, Jens Meurer and Pamela Biermann. Sebastian Ganschow and Bernd Fischer served as cinematographers; Antje Lass, Zenon Kristen and Grete Jentzen edited the film. Instant Film, Zeitsprung Pictures, Clouds Hill and Zero Fiction produced it, with WDR, NDR and MDR as co-producers. Majestic Filmverleih is the German distributor.

Biermann premiered at Filmfest Hamburg on 2 October 2026. Its German theatrical release is scheduled for 29 October 2026. Film Festival Cologne lists screenings on 22 and 30 October, including a question-and-answer event with Wolf Biermann.
The film runs 120 minutes and is in German with English subtitles. Paramount Germany lists an unrestricted German age rating. The documented release information covers Germany; a US theatrical or streaming date has not been announced in the available 2026 materials.

Previously unpublished footage adds personal and historical texture, while the Cologne concert and the secretly circulated recordings explain why his voice became politically consequential beyond the concert hall. The film’s approach is consequently part biography, part music documentary and part reflection on dissent.
Why does the film matter beyond German history?
Meurer’s central proposition is that democratic resistance needs more than solemn warnings. Biermann’s example combines direct speech, artistic practice and ridicule aimed at people who expect obedience. In that sense, the documentary asks contemporary viewers not to imitate every aspect of Biermann’s temperament, but to recover the courage to participate, criticize and laugh at power.
