Luxardo Original Maraschino Cherries are the best default choice for a classic Old Fashioned. Their dense, chewy texture and balanced sweet-tart cherry flavor suit a spirit-forward drink, and the syrup can also sweeten cocktails. Epicurious selected Luxardo as its top cocktail cherry in a blind tasting, while other options make sense for specific preferences: Filthy Black Amarena for extra tartness, Woodford Reserve Bourbon Cherries for bourbon integration, Traverse City Whiskey Co. for a large American-style cherry, Fabbri Amarena for a softer Italian profile, and Tillen Farms Rum Bada Bing for a rum-infused, more budget-oriented garnish.
The right cherry is not merely decoration. You eat it after the whiskey, bitters, dilution and orange oils have combined, so its acidity, sweetness and texture determine the drink’s final impression.
Which cherry should you buy for an Old Fashioned?
Buy Luxardo Original Maraschino Cherries if you want the most balanced, traditional garnish. Choose another jar only when you have a clear flavor or texture goal. The following comparison separates the products by the role they play in the glass.

|---|---|---|---|
| Luxardo Original Maraschino | Best overall and for a classic, spirit-forward Old Fashioned | Dense, chewy, sweet-tart and substantial | 400 g jar listed by Luxardo; candied and soaked in marasca cherry syrup; no preservatives; syrup can sweeten cocktails |
| Filthy Black Amarena | Best when the drink needs more acidity | Darker, tarter profile | Epicurious named it the runner-up; tartness can counterbalance a sweeter Old Fashioned |
| Woodford Reserve Bourbon Cherries | Best for reinforcing bourbon character | Firm Bordeaux cherries with bourbon flavor | Flavored with Woodford Reserve bourbon in syrup; Epicurious named it the best bourbon cherry |
| Traverse City Whiskey Co. Premium Cocktail Cherries | Best American-style option | Large, plump and firm with a sweet-tart profile | Made from northern Michigan Balaton cherries; 21.2 oz package listed by the manufacturer |
| Fabbri Amarena | Best for a softer, more complex Italian style | Sweet entry, tart finish and almond-like depth | A softer alternative highlighted by comparative guides |
| Tillen Farms Rum Bada Bing | Best for a rum-infused, budget-oriented garnish | Plump Northwest cherries with a slightly chewy bite | Served in a rum-sugar syrup; The Mixer describes it as a lower-cost option |
Package sizes, prices and availability vary by retailer and region. The listed weights are manufacturer specifications, not a promise of current stock or price.

Why does the cherry matter in an Old Fashioned?
An Old Fashioned has very few ingredients, so the garnish remains noticeable. A cherry contributes a final bite of fruit, sugar and acidity after the whiskey has been diluted and the bitters have opened up. A watery or aggressively sweet cherry can make the ending seem flat; a firm, tart cherry can reset the palate.
Flavor intensity
Whiskey and bitters should remain the center of the drink. Luxardo’s rich cherry flavor is pronounced but balanced, while Filthy Black Amarena deliberately pushes the profile toward darker acidity. Woodford Reserve Cherries add a bourbon note rather than a neutral fruit accent. Match intensity to the whiskey: a delicate, lower-proof pour benefits from restraint, while a robust bourbon can support a more assertive cherry.
Acidity and sweetness
Sweetness in the garnish is perceived after the sip, when the palate is already coated with whiskey. Extra tartness is useful when the cocktail contains a generous amount of sugar or when the chosen bourbon has a noticeably sweet profile. Fabbri’s sweet beginning and tart finish create a different sequence from Luxardo’s more even balance. Tillen’s rum-sugar syrup adds a warmer, confectionary direction.

Texture
Texture is easy to overlook because the cherry sits in the glass, but it is the part you physically eat. A substantial, chewy fruit feels intentional; a soft fruit can dissolve into the drink or leave a thin finish. Luxardo is described as dense and chewy, Woodford Reserve and Traverse City as firm, and Fabbri as softer.
Syrup utility
The liquid in the jar is a secondary ingredient. Luxardo’s technical sheet specifically says its marasca syrup may be used as a flavored sugar in cocktails. Use it sparingly: a bar spoon can add cherry aroma, but replacing all of an Old Fashioned’s sugar with syrup may obscure the whiskey and bitters.
Are Luxardo cherries worth it?
Luxardo is worth the additional expense when the garnish is part of the experience rather than an afterthought. Epicurious’s blind tasting selected it as the best cocktail cherry overall, citing rich cherry flavor, a sweet-tart balance and substantial texture. Those attributes address the three things most noticeable in an Old Fashioned: the final flavor, the level of sweetness and the bite of the fruit.
Luxardo’s official product information describes the cherries as dense, chewy and sweet-tart. Its technical sheet identifies them as candied cherries soaked in marasca cherry syrup, with no preservatives, and notes that the syrup itself can be used as a cocktail sweetener. The product page lists a 400 g jar, which is enough for repeated home use but not necessarily the most economical format for a bar serving large volumes.

Luxardo is not automatically the right answer for every recipe. If your Old Fashioned is already very sweet, a tarter cherry may produce better balance. If you want the garnish to echo a bourbon brand, Woodford Reserve provides a more direct connection. The value comes from choosing a flavor that fits the drink, not from treating one label as mandatory.
What can you use instead of Luxardo cherries?
Filthy Black Amarena: choose it for tartness
Filthy Black Amarena is the clearest alternative when you want a darker, more acidic finish. Epicurious placed it immediately behind Luxardo in its blind tasting and noted that its added tartness can counterbalance sweeter Old Fashioneds. It is a useful choice for recipes that include a rich demerara syrup or a particularly sweet bourbon.
Because its profile is more tart, use it when you want the cherry to refresh the palate rather than extend the drink’s sweetness. A single fruit is usually enough; adding extra syrup defeats the reason for choosing it.
Woodford Reserve Bourbon Cherries: choose them for bourbon integration
Liquor.com describes these as firm Bordeaux cherries flavored with Woodford Reserve bourbon in syrup, and Epicurious named them its best bourbon cherry. They work when the cocktail’s identity is explicitly bourbon-led and you want the garnish to reinforce that spirit instead of introducing a separate Italian marasca character.

They are especially logical for a bourbon Old Fashioned served at a whiskey-focused gathering. If the base spirit is rye, Scotch or brandy, the bourbon infusion may feel less integrated, so a neutral or more tart cherry can be safer.
Traverse City Whiskey Co. Premium Cocktail Cherries: choose an American-style fruit
Traverse City uses northern Michigan Balaton cherries that are slow-cooked and candied. The manufacturer gives the package weight as 21.2 ounces, while Liquor.com describes the fruit as large, plump, firm and bourbon-heated. The result is an American interpretation that emphasizes size and a sweet-tart cherry profile.
Choose these when a visibly large garnish matters or when you prefer a whiskey-influenced cherry without using a brand-specific bourbon product. Their firmness also makes them practical for a pick that must sit above the ice without tearing.

Fabbri Amarena: choose it for a softer, layered finish
Fabbri Amarena offers a softer texture and a more complex progression: sweetness at first, followed by tartness and an almond-like depth. It suits drinkers who want the garnish to feel dessert-like but not simply sugary.

Pair it with a whiskey that has baking-spice or nutty notes, and keep the amount of syrup modest so the layered flavor remains distinct.
Tillen Farms Rum Bada Bing: choose it for rum character and value
The Mixer describes Tillen Farms Rum Bada Bing as plump Northwest cherries in a rum-sugar syrup with a slightly chewy texture. It is the practical choice when you want an infused garnish and a more budget-oriented option.
Rum changes the direction of the drink more than a neutral syrup does. It can complement a sweeter bourbon, but it may compete with a heavily peated or highly spicy whiskey. Taste the syrup before adding any extra sweetener to the cocktail.
Should you use a bright-red supermarket maraschino cherry?
You can, but it is usually a visual choice rather than a flavor-driven one. Bright-red maraschino cherries are often selected for color and familiarity, whereas the cocktail cherries above are intended to provide noticeable fruit flavor, acidity and texture.

Keep the Old Fashioned itself less sweet than usual until you taste the garnish, because a strongly sugary cherry can make the final sip cloying. For a classic whiskey-forward presentation, a dark, naturally colored cherry generally looks and tastes more integrated.
How should you match a cherry to the whiskey and recipe?
Start with the drink’s existing balance, then choose the cherry that fills the gap. This sequence prevents the garnish from dictating the entire cocktail.

- Taste the base drink without the cherry. Identify whether the whiskey, bitters and sweetener finish dry, sweet, spicy or smoky.
- Decide whether you need contrast or reinforcement. Choose Filthy Black Amarena for acidity, Woodford Reserve for bourbon reinforcement, or a balanced Luxardo when no correction is needed.
- Choose the texture deliberately. Select a firm cherry for a clean bite and a stable garnish; select Fabbri when you prefer a softer, more integrated finish.
- Evaluate the syrup separately. A flavored syrup can adjust sweetness, but it should not hide the whiskey. Add only enough to support the recipe.
- Use one cherry first. The garnish is concentrated. Add a second only when serving a larger format or when the recipe specifically calls for it.

How do you garnish an Old Fashioned with a cherry?
Use the cherry as a finishing accent, not as a muddled source of sugar. A traditional presentation lets the whiskey, bitters and orange oils remain clear while making the fruit available for the final bite.
- Chill the glass and prepare the drink. Build or stir the Old Fashioned according to your recipe before adding the garnish.
- Drain the cherry. Excess syrup can run down the outside of the fruit and unintentionally sweeten the drink.
- Express an orange peel over the surface. Twist the peel over the drink to release its oils, then rub the rim if desired.
- Add one cherry with the peel. Place both on a pick or rest the cherry in the glass so it remains easy to retrieve.
- Serve promptly. The garnish should stay distinct rather than soaking in the drink long enough to dilute its texture.
Muddling a jar cherry into the bottom of the glass produces a sweeter, fruitier cocktail and can obscure the whiskey. Use that technique only when a recipe intentionally calls for a fruit-forward variation.

How should cocktail cherries be stored?
Keep the jar sealed and refrigerated after opening, following the product label for the specific brand. The Mixer gives general guidance to seal cocktail cherries and refrigerate them; the label takes precedence because formulations and handling instructions differ.
Luxardo’s technical sheet lists a three-year shelf life for the product. That figure applies to the product specification and should not be treated as a guarantee that an opened jar will remain at peak quality for that entire period. Use clean utensils, keep fruit submerged in syrup, and discard cherries that develop an off odor, mold or an unusual appearance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What common mistakes make a cherry taste wrong?
Using too much syrup
Jar syrup is concentrated. Pouring several spoonfuls into an already sweet Old Fashioned can overpower the bitters and make the finish sticky. Measure a small amount, taste, and adjust the drink’s sweetener rather than adding syrup on top of the original quantity.
Choosing by color alone
A vivid red color does not indicate acidity, texture or cherry depth. Read the product description for the qualities that matter in the glass: firm or soft fruit, tart or sweet profile, and any spirit infusion.

Bourbon-infused cherries can be excellent in a bourbon Old Fashioned but distracting in a rye-forward or smoky variation. Rum-infused cherries create a similar compatibility question. When the base spirit is unusual, a balanced cherry without a strong secondary spirit is the least risky starting point.
Leaving the cherry submerged for too long
Long contact with the drink can leach color and syrup into the cocktail and soften the fruit. Add the cherry immediately before serving and keep it on a pick when you want the cleanest presentation.

Serving a damaged or dry fruit
Inspect the cherry before it reaches the glass. Torn skins, dried edges or crystallized syrup produce an inferior bite regardless of the brand. A smaller, intact cherry is preferable to a large fruit that has been mishandled.
What should you check before buying?
- Flavor goal: balanced, tart, bourbon-led, rum-led or almond-like.
- Texture: dense and chewy, firm and plump, or soft and yielding.
- Syrup role: whether you want a usable cocktail sweetener or only fruit for garnish.
- Package size: Luxardo lists 400 g; Traverse City lists 21.2 oz; sizes for the other products are not stated in the available specifications.
- Storage space: an opened jar generally needs sealing and refrigeration.
- Current price and stock: these change by retailer and region and should be checked at purchase.
For most home bars, one jar of Luxardo is a dependable starting point because it works with a wide range of whiskey styles and supplies syrup as well as fruit. Once you know whether your preference leans tarter, softer, larger or more spirit-infused, the alternatives become purposeful rather than random substitutions.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many cherries should go in an Old Fashioned?
One cherry is the standard starting point because the fruit and syrup are concentrated. Add a second only for a larger serving, a presentation built around multiple garnishes, or a recipe that specifically calls for it.
Can I use frozen or fresh cherries instead of jarred cocktail cherries?
Fresh or frozen fruit will not have the same candied texture or infused syrup as a cocktail cherry. If you substitute, expect a less sweet, more natural fruit note and adjust the drink’s sweetener separately rather than assuming the fruit supplies equivalent syrup.
Do cocktail cherries need to be pitted?
Commercial cocktail cherries are generally sold ready to garnish, but check the package wording before serving. Never assume a loose or specialty cherry is pitted; a pit can be a hazard when the fruit is eaten directly from the glass.
Why does my cherry sink in the glass?
Dense fruit and syrup can make a cherry heavier than the liquid, especially in a drink over a large cube. Put it on a cocktail pick with the orange peel so the garnish stays visible and can be removed without disturbing the ice.
Can cherry syrup replace the sugar cube in every Old Fashioned recipe?
No. Syrup sweetness varies by brand, and infused cherry flavor changes the drink’s profile. Replace only part of the recipe’s sweetener at first, then taste before adding more.
