Choose based on the source, resolution, frame rate, codec, encoder, and whether that encoder can use hardware acceleration; then benchmark the actual setup in your intended AWS Region. For continuous CPU-heavy encoding, start by evaluating fixed-performance compute rather than assuming a burstable T instance can sustain full-CPU load. AWS identifies video encoding as a sustained high-CPU workload and media transcoding as a use case for its compute-optimized family, but neither label guarantees a specific instance size will work for your stream.
Start by defining what the EC2 instance must do
An instance that simply relays an already encoded video has different needs from one that captures a camera or gameplay feed and encodes it in real time. Before picking an instance, write down the workload:
- Source: prerecorded video, camera, gameplay, or another input.
- Output: resolution and frame rate, such as 1080p at 60 fps.
- Codec: H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1.
- Encoder: the application and its CPU or hardware-encoding capabilities.
- Operating environment: operating system, AWS Region, storage, and expected network transfer.
Those details determine whether the limiting resource is CPU, an available hardware encoder, network capacity, or something else. AWS recommends testing with the application that will run the workload rather than selecting an instance from a family description alone. AWS EC2 instance types
Which EC2 instance families should you evaluate?
Fixed-performance compute for sustained CPU encoding
If your encoder performs software encoding on the CPU and uses it heavily for the entire stream, evaluate fixed-performance instances as your baseline. AWS specifically identifies video encoding as an example of sustained high CPU demand and recommends fixed-performance instances for workloads requiring consistently high CPU performance. This is a family-level starting point, not a recommendation of a particular size. AWS guidance on burstable performance and CPU credits

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Compute-optimized instances for media transcoding
AWS describes its compute-optimized family as designed for compute-intensive applications, including media transcoding. Compare a suitable compute-optimized option with other fixed-performance candidates if your workload is encoding-intensive. The right size still depends on measured performance with your codec, frame rate, and encoder settings. AWS compute-optimized instance types
GPU instances only when your encoding path can use them
A GPU instance may be worth testing when your selected application and codec can use a supported GPU encoding path. Do not assume that any GPU will improve a YouTube livestream: the available evidence does not establish that every livestream benefits from GPU acceleration. Confirm support in the encoder, then compare real output, dropped frames, and cost against CPU-based alternatives.

Why not default to a burstable T instance?
Bursty CPU performance is governed by CPU credits. For a stream that keeps CPU utilization high around the clock, credit-based performance is a risky assumption; evaluate fixed-performance compute instead. A T instance may still suit a workload with modest or intermittent CPU demand, but only a representative test can establish whether it sustains your encoding settings. AWS CPU credit guidance
Set the YouTube encoder output before benchmarking
Benchmark the settings you actually intend to send to YouTube. Its live encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1; it recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. YouTube supports frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube live encoder settings

H.264 bitrate recommendations from YouTube
| Output | YouTube-listed minimum | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube ingest recommendations for H.264, not measurements of EC2 capacity. YouTube lists different bitrate ranges for H.265 and AV1, so do not apply the H.264 figures to those codecs. Use the matching codec section in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance when configuring another format. Test representative movement and audio, and monitor YouTube stream health during the test.
Benchmark a candidate instance with the real stream
- Fix the workload: choose the source, resolution, frame rate, codec, encoder application, and intended bitrate before comparing instances.
- Check the encoding path: establish whether the application encodes on the CPU or can use a supported GPU encoder for the selected codec.
- Choose candidates: begin with fixed-performance compute for sustained CPU encoding; include compute-optimized instances for an encoding-intensive workload and accelerated instances only if the software can use them.
- Run representative tests: use video with the movement and audio expected in the continuous stream, and test for long enough to expose sustained-load problems rather than relying on a short launch check.
- Check stream health: monitor dropped frames and YouTube’s stream-health indicators while the candidate is encoding and sending the stream.
- Compare in the intended Region: check regional availability, network capacity, and the same workload on alternative sizes before settling on a configuration.
AWS recommends benchmarking with the actual application. A family name or published processor specification alone cannot establish whether a particular instance will encode your stream reliably. AWS instance-type guidance

Estimate the 24/7 cost without confusing service examples
There is no defensible EC2 monthly total without an instance size, Region, operating system, storage requirement, data transfer volume, and pricing model. Price those components separately for the configuration you benchmark, then project the continuous runtime using the selected pricing terms. Instance prices and regional availability can change, so check AWS pricing for the Region and instance you plan to use.
AWS’s managed Live Streaming on AWS solution gives an example of approximately $69.74 for a one-hour event with approximately 1,000 viewers and SD-540p output in US East (N. Virginia): approximately $2.50 for live encoding and packaging plus approximately $67.24 for 791 GB of distribution. This is a configuration-specific, multi-service event example—not an EC2 encoder price or a 24/7 estimate. AWS Live Streaming on AWS solution
